    Instruction manual for the JASCO Z-Wave® Certified On/Off Relay Switch and 3-Way Switch Kit (Models 45740/45760, chipset ZW4003) — a wireless lighting control switch for permanently installed lighting, fans, and other fixtures.

    Overview

    This switch is one component of a Z-Wave® control system and works with all other Z-Wave enabled devices in a home control network. It also acts as a wireless repeater, extending the range of the wireless controller. Devices of other types and brands can be added to the system and will also act as range extenders if they support signal repeating.

    Safety Warnings

    • Installation must comply with the National Electric Code and local regulations (US) or the Canadian Electrical Code and local regulations (Canada). Consult a qualified electrician if unsure.
    • For use only with permanently installed fixtures. Do not exceed 960W (Incandescent), 15A/1800W (Resistive), or ½ HP (Motor).
    • NOT FOR USE WITH MEDICAL OR LIFE SUPPORT EQUIPMENT.
    • RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRICAL SHOCK, AND BURNS. Exercise extreme caution when controlling appliances — unintentional activation, timed events, or automatic power-on could create hazardous conditions.
    • SHOCK HAZARD: Turn OFF power to the branch circuit at the service panel before any wiring work. All wiring connections must be made with power OFF.
    • There are no user-serviceable parts inside this unit.

    Controlling Appliances Safely

    • Assign Z-Wave controlled appliances to device numbers 10–18 on the JASCO remote (requires pressing "Shift" first, reducing accidental activation).
    • Remove appliance-controlling Z-Wave devices from the "All" control setting.
    • Do not include appliance-controlling devices in Groups or Scenes.
    • Do not use to control electric heaters or other appliances where unattended/automatic power-on could be hazardous.
    • Double-check programs for accuracy before use.

    Wireless Range

    Complies with the Z-Wave standard of open-air, line-of-sight transmission distance of 65 feet. Actual performance depends on walls, construction type, and number of Z-Wave devices in the network (most act as signal repeaters, creating more transmission routes).

    • Each wall/obstacle between devices reduces max range by approximately 25–30%.
    • Brick, tile, or concrete walls block more RF signal than wood-stud/drywall walls.
    • Wall-mounted devices in metal junction boxes may suffer ~20% range loss.

    Z-Wave networks are designed to coexist with 802.11 Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other 2.4/5.8GHz devices. Older 900MHz cordless phones and some baby monitors/wireless video devices may cause interference; try switching channel "A" or "B" if available on those devices.

    Understanding 3-Way Circuits

    A "3-way circuit" has two switches and one load (e.g., a stairway light). A common wiring method routes incoming power through the first switch, then the second switch, then the load — this is the easiest to convert to Z-Wave. Switch 1 becomes the Z-Wave Auxiliary switch and Switch 2 becomes the Primary Z-Wave switch. The auxiliary switch does not control power directly; it sends a momentary voltage signal through the traveler wire to the primary switch, which controls the load. Consult an electrician if you're unsure of your wiring configuration.

    Installation

    Can be used alone for 2-way control (one switch, one load), with one Auxiliary Switch for 3-way control (two switches, one load), or with two Auxiliary switches for 4-way control (three switches, one load). If used alone for 2-way control, leave the traveler terminal insulated (do not remove the tape) since it won't be used.

    1. Shut off power to the circuit at the fuse box or breaker.
    2. Remove the wall plate.
    3. Verify power is OFF to the switch box before continuing.
    4. Remove the switch mounting screws.
    5. Carefully remove the switch from the box — do NOT disconnect the wires yet.
    6. Identify the five screw terminals on the primary switch: LINE (Hot), Neutral, LOAD, GROUND, and TRAVELER. The Traveler terminal is only used for 3-way/4-way wiring — leave it insulated for 2-way installs. Match terminals to the wires on the existing switch.
    7. Disconnect the wires from the existing switch.
    8. Connect the green/bare copper ground wire to GROUND.
    9. Connect the black wire that goes to the light to LOAD.
    10. Connect the black wire from the service panel (Hot) to LINE.
    11. Connect the white wire to the Neutral terminal. (UL-specified screw tightening torque: 14 Kgf-cm / 12 lbf-in.)
    12. Optional (3/4-way only): Connect the Traveler wire (usually red) to the TRAVELER terminal; the other end connects to the TRAVELER terminal on the Auxiliary Switch.
    13. Insert the Z-Wave switch into the switch box, being careful not to pinch or crush wires.
    14. Secure the switch to the box with the supplied screws.
    15. Mount the wall plate.
    16. Reapply power at the fuse box/breaker and test the system.

    Optional: Wiring the Auxiliary Switch (3- or 4-Way Control)

    • Requires three wiring connections: the Traveler wire (sends voltage signals to the primary switch), Ground, and Neutral.
    • DO NOT connect the auxiliary switch to the home's black Hot (Line) wire.

    Wiring Requirements

    • Copper wire only.
    • Use 14 AWG or larger, rated for at least 80°C, for Hot, Load, Neutral, and Traveler connections; same gauge/rating for ground.
    • Wire strip length: 1" (25mm) for screw terminal attachment; 5/8" (16mm) for enclosure hole attachment.
    • Single, dual, and triple gang boxes: it may be necessary to break off one or both scored tabs on the front yoke to fit multi-gang boxes — this does not affect the electrical rating.

    Basic Operation

    Manual Control

    • Tap the top of the rocker to turn the connected lighting ON.
    • Tap the bottom of the rocker to turn it OFF.

    Programming (Include/Exclude from Network)

    • Use your primary controller's network setup function to include or exclude the device.
    • When prompted by the controller, tap the top or bottom of the rocker.
    • The controller should confirm success; if it indicates failure, repeat the procedure.

    After a power failure, the Z-Wave primary switch returns to its last used state.

    Advanced Operation

    Advanced settings require an advanced controller (e.g., JASCO model 45601 LCD remote) or equivalent from another manufacturer.

    All On / All Off Response

    The primary switch can be configured to one of four responses (default: respond to both):

    • Respond to both ALL ON and ALL OFF (default)
    • Respond to neither
    • Respond to ALL OFF only
    • Respond to ALL ON only

    Invert Switch

    If installed upside down (On at bottom, Off at top), reverse the default toggle by setting Parameter 4 to "1".

    Restoring Factory Defaults

    All configuration parameters can be restored to factory defaults by using your primary controller to delete/reset the device.
