    Installation instructions for the ION MICRA™ Recessed Transmitter — a concealed reed switch magnet contact transmitter for window security, from iON Security Products.

    General Information

    The ION MICRA recessed transmitter is a reed switch magnet contact transmitter that provides concealed protection for windows. It's powered by a long-life lithium battery that's easily replaceable when a low battery condition is indicated by the control panel.

    Programming the ID Number

    Each ION MICRA has its own unique identification code (serial number) permanently assigned during manufacturing. The electronic serial number (ESN) is located on the label attached to the antenna — this label should never be removed. The receiver panel is required to "enroll" the transmitter's ID during system installation.

    For receiver panels that require a "Tamper" signal to enroll the sensor, each MICRA automatically sends a Tamper signal upon startup when the battery is inserted. If the unit doesn't enroll, remove the battery, touch the battery and clips together briefly with a small screwdriver, and try inserting the battery again.

    Preliminary Considerations — Windows

    • Select a location for the transmitter on the window frame. Do not use on metal frame windows — wireless range decreases significantly.
    • Requires a 3/4" diameter hole (using a 3/4" Forstner bit) drilled into the edge of the window frame, no more than 1/3" deep.
    • Vinyl sliding windows: preferred mounting direction is vertical.
    • Hung windows: the ION MICRA must be mounted horizontally, with the accompanying surface-mount magnet in the lower window sash.
    • Before drilling, tape the transmitter and magnet in their approximate locations (with battery installed) and run Go/No-Go signal-strength tests per the control's instructions. Re-orient or relocate the transmitter if needed.
    • No more than 1-1/2" gap should be present between the transmitter and magnet faces when installed. The "iON" graphic on the transmitter must be perpendicular to the length of the magnet.
    • An alarm signal must be obtained before a clear space of 2" is reached as the window opens.
    Warning: Under no circumstances should the outer wall of the window frame be penetrated by the Forstner bit.

    Installation Steps

    Step 1 — Measure and Drill

    Using a 3/4" Forstner drill bit, drill into the vinyl window mainframe. For side-mount on vinyl sliders with a horizontal sliding sash: measure 3" down from the inside top corner of the mainframe and mark the center point for the transmitter hole; mark a corresponding point on the sash for the magnet.

    Step 2 — Place and Set

    Insert the MICRA's antenna into the extrusion hollow, then press the transmitter body into the cored opening. Always keep the antenna straight — never cut or coil it. You may fold the antenna in half if space is a concern (this may affect range).

    Step 3 — Sash Magnet Placement

    Remove the adhesive backing and place the surface mount magnet in the corresponding position to the MICRA transmitter. It's essential that the MICRA transmitter points in the same direction as its corresponding magnet.

    Mounting (General)

    1. Mark the selected transmitter location on the window frame.
    2. Mark the surface-mount magnet location on the window sash, directly opposite the transmitter. Confirm successful Go/No-Go transmission reception tests before drilling any holes.
    3. Drill a hole at the marked location for the transmitter (3/4" diameter, no more than 1/3" deep).
    4. Insert the transmitter into the hole so the cap is flush with the surface. Make sure the antenna enters the cavity as straight as possible. Do not hammer the transmitter into place — press it in by hand.

    The iON MICRA uses a santoprene case designed to self-seal in the mounting hole. A thin bead of silicon may optionally be applied for additional moisture protection.

    Battery Installation & Replacement

    1. Remove the transmitter from the window by inserting a small screwdriver's flat blade into the pry-slot on the cap end and twisting slightly counter-clockwise. Remove the transmitter completely from the window to refit it properly afterward.
    2. Using the screwdriver in the pry-slot again, separate the white cap from the base with a slight counter-clockwise twist. Slide the cap with the PC board assembly apart from the base. Pull the antenna through the hole in the base just enough to replace the battery — do not pull the antenna completely out.
    3. Remove the old battery from its holder on the bottom of the PC board.
    4. Observe correct polarity (positive polarity indicator shown on the battery holder) and insert the fresh battery. Always use Energizer™ or Panasonic™ batteries.
    5. Slide the cap with the PC board assembly back into its base by gently pulling on the antenna, easing the transmitter cap into place.
    6. Snap the transmitter cap back onto the base, locking it into place.
    7. Placing the antenna into the cavity first, reinsert the transmitter into its original mounting hole. Point the oval shape on the cap in the same direction as the accompanying sash-mounted oval magnet.
    Battery Caution: Risk of fire, explosion, and burns. Do not recharge, disassemble, heat above 212°F (100°C), or incinerate. Dispose of used batteries promptly. Keep away from children.

    To the Installer

    Regular maintenance and inspection (at least annually) by the installer, and frequent testing by the user, are vital to continuous satisfactory operation of any alarm system. The installer should develop and offer a regular maintenance program to the user, and acquaint the user with proper operation and limitations of the alarm system and its components. Recommend a specific program of frequent testing (at least weekly) to ensure the system's operation at all times.
