  • How to Use Your CookStop — Motion-Sensing Range Auto Shut-Off

    August 31, 2026 2 min read

Quick-reference guide to operating CookStop, a motion-sensing auto shut-off device designed to reduce fires from unattended cooking.

    Full text manual (for reference)

    Overview

"Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires" — NFPA. CookStop's primary purpose is to reduce the possibility of accidental fires resulting from unattended cooking. CookStop is ready to work as soon as it is installed (see the separate Installation Guide).

    How It Works

CookStop uses a motion sensor to scan for activity in the kitchen while the range is on. As long as motion is detected, the range remains on. CookStop is factory-programmed to automatically shut off the range if no motion is detected in the kitchen during a 5-minute countdown period (this default timing can be changed).

    Basic Operation

    • To begin cooking: Press the GREEN COOK button — it becomes a solid green light, and you can turn on your burners or oven. The countdown timer continually resets every time motion is detected in the kitchen.
    • A small blue light next to the COOK and STOP buttons indicates when motion is currently being detected.

    Indicator Lights

    • Steady GREEN light — you can cook (range is on).
    • Steady RED light with blinking GREEN light — the range has been automatically shut OFF.
    • To resume cooking after a shutoff, simply press the GREEN COOK button again.

Returning to Cooking After Auto Shut-Off

If you leave the kitchen while cooking and return after the countdown has expired, the stove will have automatically shut off (indicated by a solid red light with a blinking green light). Press the GREEN COOK button to resume cooking. If you're finished using the stove, simply turn the stove knobs off as normal.

    Advanced Settings

The countdown timer duration and other settings can be changed using a secure-key configuration process (see the separate technician/installer documentation).
