Hot Link XL — IR Remote Extender Installation Instructions

Installation instructions for the Hot Link XL IR remote extender system, used as an addendum alongside the Hot Link Pro instructions to extend infrared remote control signals to equipment in a remote closet or cabinet.

Installation Steps

1. Apply the Hot Link Eye, Main Box, and Blue LED per the instructions in the Hot Link Pro manual, in the TV viewing area.
2. Apply Emitters to equipment in the remote location per the Emitter section of the Hot Link Pro instructions.
3. Connect the Main Box to the Emitter/Power Box using Category 5 or Category 6 Ethernet cable with a standard RJ45 connector. Do NOT use "reverse" or computer-to-computer Ethernet cable. Phone cable with RJ11 6-pin connectors may be used, but take care during installation — RJ45 connectors are larger than RJ11 and may not align properly.

   Warning: Do not short wires or allow the wire to be pinched within walls.

4. Plug the power supply into a wall outlet, then plug the DC 5mm connector into the Emitter/Power Box. The Confirmation LED on the Emitter/Power Box should blink once upon connection, and the Power LED should stay on bright.
5. Operate the equipment and observe both confirmation LEDs — one on the Main Box, one on the Emitter/Power Box.

System Layout

• TV Area: Remote Receiver Eye (on back of TV/plasma) → 6 ft cable → Main Box (Blue Confirmation LED)
• Cable run: Category 5/6 cable, up to 100+ ft, from Main Box to Emitter/Power Box
• Equipment Closet: Emitter/Power Box (Power and Fuse OK LED, 100mA fuse inside, latch access — push up to open) with 7 ft leads to Emitters attached to AV gear (DISH, DVD, surround receiver, VHS, etc.)
• Power supply: connects via 6 ft cable to the Emitter/Power Box

Wiring Notes

• Power Input Jack: center pin is positive (+)
• RJ45 8-pin connector uses only the center four wires
• The system will function even if reverse-wired (1=4, 2=3) to accommodate telephone wire, but reverse Ethernet cables cannot be used
• If the Power LED is not lit, check the 100 milliampere fuse inside the Emitter/Power Box — do not substitute a different fuse rating

Expansion

Up to 6 more Emitters can be added to either end of the system using the Emitter Expansion Kit X6, which comes with an RJ45 "Y" connector that mates to the RJ45 connector on either the Main Box or the Emitter/Power Box.
