Installation Instructions for the HAI RC-1000 precision digital thermostat, for 24VAC heating and cooling systems — supports Single Stage Heat/Cool, Heat Pump (2-stage heat / 1-stage cool), and Dual Fuel Heat Pump configurations, with local and remote control.

    Description

    The RC-1000 supports:

    • Single Stage Heat/Cool Conventional
    • Heat Pump (2 Stage Heat / 1 Stage Cool)
    • Dual Fuel Heat Pump (2 Stage Heat / 1 Stage Cool)

It offers programmability, stand-alone operation, and robust optically-isolated communications with automation systems, utility control systems, and personal computers.

Electrical rating: 24V, 2A, 50/60Hz. Maximum current 2A on any circuit, 3A total.

Europe installations: must be installed per national wiring rules; all labels/instructions/markings relating to safety must be translated to a language acceptable in the installation country.

    Before Installing

    1. Read the Installation Instructions and Owner's Manual carefully.
    2. Ensure this product is suitable for your application.
    3. Ensure wiring complies with all codes and ordinances.
    4. Disconnect power to the control transformer to prevent electrical shock and equipment damage.
    5. Select an appropriate location for accurate temperature reading.

    Location

    • Mount 5 feet above the floor and at least 2 feet from an outdoor wall.
    • Locate in an area with adequate air circulation.
    • Do not mount in direct sunlight or the path of radiant heat from appliances.
    • Do not mount behind an outdoor wall, near a fireplace, or in the path of air ducts.

    Removing an Existing Thermostat

    1. Disconnect power to the control transformer.
    2. Remove the cover from the existing thermostat.
    3. Disconnect wires from each terminal, labeling each with its letter/number.
    4. Remove the existing plate or base from the wall.

    Mounting

    1. Grasp the thermostat by the sides (avoiding the keys) and unsnap the base from the face.
    2. Hold the base to the wall with "UP" upright and facing you; mark the two mounting holes with a pencil.
    3. Drill each marked hole with a 3/16" bit and install the supplied wall anchors.
    4. Slide the system wires through the opening in the base.
    5. Mount the base using the two supplied #6 x 1/2" self-tapping screws.
    6. Connect each wire to the terminal strip(s) per the wiring diagram for your system application. Form the wiring so the cable lies flat between the terminal strip(s) and the center of the base.
    7. If using a remote system or temperature sensor, connect per its diagram.
    8. Push excess wiring into the wall hole and plug it with the supplied insulating foam for accurate temperature readings.
    9. Align the tabs of the thermostat face with the base slots and gently push into place.

Note: confirm the thermostat temperature sensor is standing up and undamaged during installation.

    Wiring — Important Notes

    • Disconnect power to the control transformer before removing or installing the thermostat.
    • Never short the gas valve, fan, heat relay, or cool relay — even momentarily.
    • Do not attempt to hook up to live circuits — accidental connection to a board component could damage the thermostat.
    • For HVAC systems with a single transformer for heating and cooling, the metal jumper between Terminal 1 (RC) and Terminal 2 (RH) on the left terminal strip must remain in place.
    • For HVAC systems with separate heating and cooling transformers, that jumper must be removed.
    • From the factory, RC-1000 is configured for a single-stage conventional HVAC system. If the system is a heat pump or dual fuel heat pump, "System Type" under "System Options" must be reconfigured before use.
    • By default, this thermostat does not turn the fan on with a call for heat. If your furnace requires that, set "System Mode" to "Fan On With Heat" under System Options.
    • A conventional thermostat can be configured for automatic changeover heat/cool, manual changeover heat/cool, heat only, or cool only.
    • To disable the Task Buttons and Scroll Wheel (preventing local control), remove the buttons jumper (J6) labeled "BUTTONS" on the thermostat PCB.
    • The RC-1000 works with most single-stage conventional 4-wire HVAC systems without a transformer common. If the thermostat "resets" when calling for heat/cool, or the heat/cool/fan relay can't supply 15mA without activating, a transformer common wire or the HAI Thermostat Power Supply Module (Part Number 30A00-1) is required.

Terminal Wiring — Single Stage Conventional

    Terminal Function Connects To
    8 (G) Fan Fan Relay
    7 (Y1) Cool Cool Relay
    6 (W1) Heat Heat Relay
    3 (C) 24VAC Common* Transformer
    1 (RC) 24VAC "HOT" Transformer

*Common wire is required in "heat only" or "cool only" applications, or if the heat/cool/fan relay cannot supply 15mA to power the thermostat without activating.

Power Up — Single Stage Conventional

    1. Double-check wiring; ensure no stray wires or strands at connections.
    2. Connect power to the transformer and system. Display shows current settings.
    3. Press [FAN] → "On" — the fan should come on. Press [FAN] → "Auto" — fan should go off.
    4. Set Mode to "Heat," raise the heat setting above current temperature and confirm the heating unit activates; set to "Off" and confirm it deactivates.
    5. Set Mode to "Cool," lower the cool setting below current temperature and confirm the cooling unit activates; set to "Off" and confirm it deactivates.

    Heat Pump Systems

    • Terminal 5 (O) energizes for cooling; Terminal 6 (B) energizes for heating. In most applications the reversing valve is energized for cooling (connect to "O"); if it requires energizing for heating, connect to "B" instead.
    • To temporarily disable Energy Efficient Control and heat as quickly as possible, press [HOLD] → "On" — the RC-1000 will use auxiliary heat as needed.
    • Terminal 9 (L) indicates a heat pump compressor fault — display flashes red with "Heat Pump Fault" message.
    • The Emergency Heat Relay (E terminal) and outdoor thermostats are not used — the RC-1000 automatically controls auxiliary heat. Remove any outdoor thermostat from the auxiliary heat circuit if present.

Terminal Wiring — Heat Pump (2 Stage Heat / 1 Stage Cool)

    Terminal Function Connects To
9 (L) Ground Fault Fault Relay
    8 (G) Fan Fan Relay
    7 (Y1) Compressor Compressor Relay
    6 (B) Energized in Heat —
5 (O) Energized in Cool Reversing Valve
4 (W2) Auxiliary Heat Aux Heat Relay
    3 (C) 24VAC Common Transformer
    1 (RC) 24VAC "HOT" Transformer

Configuration & Power Up — Heat Pump

Set "System Type" to "Heat Pump" under System Options (or "Dual Fuel Heat Pump" if Terminal W2 connects to the furnace's W/W1).

    1. Double-check wiring for stray strands.
    2. Connect power; display shows all settings.
    3. Press [FAN] → "On"/"Auto" to test fan operation.
    4. Press [HOLD] → "On" to override Energy Efficient Control for testing.
    5. Set Mode to "Heat," raise setting 1° above current temp — heat pump should come on in heating mode. Raise 3° more — auxiliary heat should activate. Set Mode to "EM Heat" — heat pump stops, auxiliary heat remains on. Set to "Off" — both should deactivate.
    6. Set Mode to "Cool," lower setting below current temp — heat pump should come on in cooling mode; set to "Off" to confirm deactivation.
    7. Press [HOLD] → "Off" to re-enable Energy Efficient Control.

    Dual Fuel Heat Pump Systems

A dual fuel system combines a gas furnace with a heat pump — the furnace serves as auxiliary heat unless outdoor temperature is very low, in which case it becomes the primary heat source.

    • Requires an outdoor temperature reading via a physical remote sensor or from a remote system. If unavailable, the compressor won't operate and the thermostat calls for auxiliary heat only, showing an "Outdoor Sensor Fault" message.
    • Balance Setpoint Limits: above the Upper Balance Setpoint (45°F default), heat pump used exclusively. Between Upper and Lower Balance Setpoint (35°F default), if the heat pump can't heat at ≥5°F/hour, it turns off and auxiliary heat takes over. Below the Lower Balance Setpoint, heat pump turns off and auxiliary heat is used exclusively.
    • Balance Setpoint Limits are adjustable under Installation Settings.
    • When calling for auxiliary heat, the compressor turns off and auxiliary heat runs exclusively.

    Remote System Wiring

The RC-1000 comes preprogrammed with energy-saving schedules. When used with a remote system, HAI recommends setting Program Mode to "None" or "Occupancy" to disable internal schedules.

    Communications Jumper (J8)

    • Factory-installed. Keep installed when connecting to an HAI Home Control system or remote switch.
    • Remove when connecting to a PC or other serial-port device.

    HAI Home Control Systems

Run a 3-4 conductor wire from the HAI system to the thermostat. All thermostats connect to Ground, Zone +16, and Output 8 (Black, Green, Yellow terminals). Additional thermostats connect in parallel — home-run or daisy chain. On an OmniLT controller, connect to GRN, BLK, and YEL terminals under "TSTAT."

    Remote Setback Switch

Run a two-conductor wire from the remote switch to the Black and Green terminals under "Comm." Requires Program Options set to "Occupancy." 0VDC applied = Occupancy Day settings; 5-15VDC applied = Occupancy Night settings.

    Remote Temperature Sensor

Run twisted-pair shielded cable to the Green and Black terminals under "Remote Temp Sensor." Cable type by distance: up to 100 ft — PVC-insulated shielded twisted pair; 100-150 ft — polypropylene-insulated shielded; 150-250 ft — foam-polyethylene insulated shielded. Maximum run: 250 feet. Tie the shield and one wire together at the Black terminal; at the sensor end, wrap the shield around the cable jacket and tape.

    Disable Local Control

    1. Remove the thermostat face from the base.
    2. Remove the local control jumper.
    3. Re-align the tabs and push the face back into the base.

    Setup & Configuration (Installation Settings)

Note: Time and Date must be manually set under the "Settings" menu, even when connected to an HAI controller.

Access: From Home Page, press Scroll Wheel → highlight "Setup" → select → highlight "Installation Settings" → select → read warning → [Continue]. Exit by pressing [Back] repeatedly. Thermostat auto-returns to Home Page after 3 minutes of inactivity.
