    Instruction manual (Spanish-language edition) for the GE Z-Wave Appliance Module, model 45603 (also marked ZW4101), a plug-in module that adds Z-Wave wireless on/off control to a lamp or small appliance.

    Overview

    The 45603 module is one component of a Z-Wave home control system. It plugs into a standard wall outlet and provides one Z-Wave–controlled AC outlet plus one always-on pass-through outlet. It also acts as a wireless repeater, extending the range of the Z-Wave network by relaying commands to other devices.

    Safety Warnings

    Controlling Appliances Safely

    Because Z-Wave devices can be operated from a different room than the appliance, and can also switch on automatically via scheduled events, exercise caution when controlling appliances:

    1. Assign appliance modules to remote-control device numbers 10–18 on the GE remote, which require pressing "Shift" first — reducing accidental activation.
    2. Remove appliance-controlling Z-Wave devices from the "All On/All Off" configuration.
    3. Do not include appliance-controlling devices in groups or scenes.
    4. Never use Z-Wave to control electric heaters or other appliances that could become hazardous if switched on unattended or accidentally.
    5. Double-check any automatic schedules/programs before relying on them.

    Basic Operation

    The connected load can be turned ON in two ways: (1) with a Z-Wave remote controller, or (2) manually with the pushbutton on the module's front panel. The front-panel button is a toggle — pressing it switches the appliance from off to on or on to off. The same button is also used to include/exclude the module from a Z-Wave network (per the main controller's instructions). After a power outage, the module returns to its last on/off state.

    Advanced Operation

    Advanced parameters require an advanced controller (e.g., the GE 45601 LCD remote). Depending on the primary controller, the 45603 can be configured to respond to ALL ON / ALL OFF commands in up to four different ways. All configuration parameters can be restored to factory defaults using the primary controller.

    Z-Wave networks can integrate devices from multiple manufacturers, but the controller must support each device's specific command class. For example, the basic GE 45600 remote controls only lighting-class Z-Wave devices, while the GE 45601 Deluxe LCD remote can also control other Z-Wave device classes such as thermostats.

    Wireless Range

    Rated for 65 ft (20 m) direct line-of-sight antenna-to-antenna in open air. Actual in-home performance depends on the number of walls, construction type, and number of Z-Wave repeater devices in the network. Each wall or obstacle reduces maximum range by roughly 25–30%; brick/tile/concrete walls block more signal than wood-stud/drywall construction; and devices in metal junction boxes lose roughly 20% of their range versus plastic boxes.

    Note: Z-Wave networks are designed to coexist with 802.11 Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other 2.4/5.8 GHz devices. Older 900 MHz baby monitors, wireless video devices, and cordless phones can occasionally interfere — switching such devices to their alternate "A"/"B" channel usually resolves it.
