    Installation and startup guide for the GE Security NetworX NX-590E Internet Interface — a module that connects NetworX (NX) series security control panels to a central monitoring receiver or email accounts over the Internet/Intranet.

    Overview

    The NX-590E is a dual microprocessor-controlled Internet/Intranet interface that connects to an OH Network Receiver, allowing any or all events from a NetworX control panel to be reported over the network. It attaches to the NX control panel's keypad bus, has a fixed module address of 79, and requires an Ethernet (10BT) connection.

    Enclosure Mounting

    Inside the enclosure, black plastic PCB guides mount at insertion points (two hole sizes: a larger hole for the half-moon protrusion, a smaller hole for the mounting screw). Place the first guide in the top insertion point (grooved edge down), secure with a screw through the length notch; place the second guide in the lower insertion point (grooved edge up) the same way. The PC board should then slide freely in both guides.

    Module Address

    The Internet module has a fixed address of 79. Enter this address when selecting the module to program.

    Enrolling

    NetworX control panels automatically detect and enroll all devices on the keypad bus (keypads, zone expanders, wireless receivers, etc.) when Program Mode is exited. Enrollment takes about 12 seconds, during which the "Service" LED illuminates (LCD keypads show "Service Required") and user codes are not accepted. If the control panel later fails to detect an enrolled module, the Service LED illuminates again.

    Understanding the LEDs

    LED Description
    DS1 Flashes each time the NX-590E accesses the NetworX bus (~2x/sec).
    DS2 (rear of board) Hardware use only; glows dimly when connected to an NX8/NX8-E control.
    DS3 Flashes when waiting for communication from the Ethernet module.
    DS4 On when waiting for a reply from a NetworX bus device.
    DS5 Flashes when the NX-590E gets a packet from the Ethernet module.
    DS6 On when the bus has a message to send to the network.
    L1 (SIM module) Flashes on Ethernet activity.
    L2 (SIM module) Steady on when Ethernet link is established via the 10BT cable.

    DS3–DS6 will be off when the system is initialized, normal, and waiting for a new event to report.

    Wiring

    Wire the 3-position terminal on the module to the NX control: Positive to KP POS, COM to KP COM, DATA to KP DATA. Connect the Ethernet jack J16 (10BT) to a 10BT-capable hub, router, or gateway — do not use a CASCADE or X port in crossover mode.

    Terminal Descriptions

    Terminal Description
    POS Connect to panel's KP POS terminal. Current draw: 100mA for the NX-590E.
    COM Connect to panel's KP COM terminal.
    DATA Connect to panel's KP DATA terminal.
    J16 Connect to a 10BT network hub via CAT5 patch cable.
    J6 Connect to an RS-232 modem when the unit ships with serial software.

    Programming the Module

    Entering Program Mode (LED Keypad)

    1. Press [*]-[8].
    2. Enter the "Go To Program Code" (factory default: 9-7-1-3). The Service LED flashes and the 5 function LEDs illuminate steady once you're in Program Mode.
    3. Enter the module address (79), then [#]. The Armed LED illuminates while waiting for a programming location.

    Factory Defaulting: enter [9]-[1]-[0]-[#] — the keypad beeps 3 times as defaults load (this erases any previously entered values).

    Programming a Location: enter the location number + [#]. Enter data followed by [*] to save each segment and advance; press [#] to exit the location. Use [POLICE] for the next sequential location, [FIRE] for the previous location, or [AUXILIARY] to stay on the same location. Invalid entries trigger a triple error beep.

    LCD Keypad: works the same way, with on-screen prompts. A location number in parentheses reminds you of the last location you edited.

    Programming Data Types

    • Numerical Data (0–255): entered directly on the keypad. Zone LEDs 1–8 represent binary values (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128) that sum to the stored value — e.g. entering 66 lights Zone 2 (2) and Zone 7 (64) LEDs.
    • Feature Selection Data: each segment has 8 toggleable features (keys 1–8); pressing a number toggles that feature's LED on/off. LCD keypads show enabled feature numbers and a hyphen (-) for disabled ones.
    • Character Data: used for LCD text (e.g. email addresses). Use the up/down arrows or the character lookup table to select each character, [*] to accept and advance the cursor, [Cancel] to move left, [Stay] to insert a space, [Chime] to delete.

    Key Programming Locations

    13–16 This module's return email address (user@yourdomain.com), 16 characters per location, 4 locations total (64 chars max).
    29–36 Destination email addresses (Account #1: 29-32, Account #2: 33-36) — must be real, working addresses.
    37–40 Outgoing mail server name (e.g. mail.yourdomain.com) — confirm the server accepts mail from the NX-590E's domain.
    45–52 IP addresses (required if using static IP instead of DHCP): 45 = this module, 46 = primary receiver, 47 = secondary receiver, 48 = on-site event recorder, 51 = mail server, 52 = gateway. Power-cycle the module after changing IP settings.
    53 Download computer's IP address (default 0.0.0.0).
    54 Subnet mask (typically 255.255.255.0) — confirm with your network administrator.
    55–57 TCP/IP ports: Receiver Alarm Port (55), Receiver Download Port (56), Email Port (57, default 025) — only change on your central station provider's instruction.
    60 SIA or Contact ID account number (8-digit hex; add leading zeros).
    61–62 Phone line receiver number and line number for this account.
    63 Timers/counters: Segment 1 = network attempt count (default 2), Segment 2 = seconds per overall attempt (default 30, min 30), Segment 3 = polling time in seconds (default 10).

    Important: if the NX-590E is set as the primary reporting device (with the control panel as backup only), disable all event categories in Location 4 of the control panel (device 0) to avoid dual reporting — but keep test reports enabled there so the panel can back up events the NX-590E fails to send. Note the NX-4 and NX-6 (V1) control panels cannot act as a backup to the NX-590E.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • Do I need to set up an IP address? Yes — either a static IP or DHCP for a dynamic one. Without it the NX-590E won't function.
    • Setting a static IP: set Location 0/Segment 2/Bit 3 to 0; program Location 45 (this module's IP), Location 52 (gateway), and Location 54 (subnet mask) with values from your network/IT admin.
    • Setting a dynamic IP (DHCP): set Location 0/Segment 2/Bit 3 to 1; Locations 45, 52, and 54 are unused.
    • Sending events as email only: disable all segments in Locations 1 and 2 (set to "-"), enable needed segments in Locations 3/4 for the email accounts you want to use, and fill in the From address (Locations 13-16), To addresses (29-32 for email 1, 33-36 for email 2), mail server name (37-40), mail server IP (Location 51), and email port (Location 57, default 025).
    • Sending events to Receiver 1 only: enable needed segments in Location 1, disable Locations 2/3/4, and set Location 46 (Receiver 1 IP) and Location 55 (alarm port).
    • Sending events to Receiver 2 only: enable needed segments in Location 2, disable Locations 1/3/4, and set Location 47 (Receiver 2 IP) and Location 55 (alarm port).
    • Network bandwidth impact: event messages are 54 bytes, poll messages 20 bytes, sent as infrequently as every 255 seconds (default every 10 seconds) — negligible network load.
