Instruction manual for the GE Z-Wave® Wireless Lighting Control Keypad Controller (Model 45631 / Jasco ZW5301) — a battery-powered secondary Z-Wave controller providing 4 Groups and 4 Scenes of lighting control.

Introduction

This GE Z-Wave control device provides control of 4 Groups and 4 Scenes. Up to 32 Z-Wave devices can be included in each Group or Scene. It is a secondary controller only and cannot function as a primary controller — it must first receive network information from a primary controller before it can be used to create or modify Groups and Scenes.

Group/Scene buttons are numbered 1–4 in these instructions, though the physical buttons on the device are not numbered. An amber LED behind each button provides visual feedback, and a multi-color LED (green/orange/red) behind the bezel is visible only in setup mode.

Z-Wave Terminology

• Primary Controller — the main device used to set up and control the Z-Wave network. There can be only one, and it must be used to add or delete devices.
• Secondary Controller — supports additional remotes throughout the home; cannot add or delete devices.
• Slave — devices in the network that are not controllers. Most AC-powered slaves also function as repeaters.
• Home Control Network — the wireless network linking your controllers and every Z-Wave device you've added, each with a unique address.
• Light/Node/Device — interchangeable terms for an individual Z-Wave enabled device in your network.
• Group — an area or zone; multiple devices grouped together can be turned ON/OFF with a single command.
• Scene — an activity-based lighting scheme with preset brightness levels for multiple lights, controlled with one command (e.g., a "movie" scene dims the family room lights).
• Include/Exclude — formal terms for adding or removing devices from the network, Groups, or Scenes.
• Replicate — copying Z-Wave network data to a new controller, also used to update secondary controllers after network changes.

Batteries

Two CR2032 batteries come pre-installed. Remove the insulating tabs before programming and using the device.

Battery Safety

• Use only fresh batteries of the required size and recommended type.
• Replace both batteries at the same time — do not mix old and new, or different battery types.
• Dispose of old batteries promptly and properly; do not burn or bury them.
• Replace fully discharged batteries immediately, and remove batteries if the product will be unused for an extended time.

Installing Batteries

1. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the small slot at the bottom of the faceplate and twist gently to remove the faceplate.
2. Remove the small screw from the battery retainer door. Pull out on the top of the door (hinged at the bottom).
3. Slide the batteries out of the holder.
4. Install new batteries in the correct orientation based on the "+" and "-" polarity markings.
5. Hold the batteries in place (pushing toward the center of the unit) and close the battery door, making sure the retainer door's ends fit over the batteries.
6. Reinstall the retainer screw and faceplate.

Battery Life: Under normal conditions, batteries last approximately one year. The blinking LED behind Group/Scene buttons dims as batteries deplete — a very dim LED indicates it's time to replace them. Network, Group, and Scene programming is retained when changing batteries. Controlling Groups/Scenes with large numbers of Z-Wave devices is more demanding on batteries than smaller ones.

Controlling Appliances — Important Safety Notes

Exercise extreme caution using Z-Wave devices to control appliances, since unintentional activation or timed-event programming could create a hazardous condition. Recommendations:

1. Assign Z-Wave controlled appliances to device numbers 10–18 on the GE remote — the "Shift" button must be pressed first, reducing accidental activation.
2. Remove appliance-controlling Z-Wave devices from the "All" control setting.
3. Do not include appliance-controlling devices in Groups or Scenes.
4. Do not use Z-Wave devices to control electric heaters or other appliances that could become hazardous from unattended or unintentional power-on.
5. Double-check programs for accuracy before use.

Wireless Range & Interference

Typical range from the remote (or repeating module) to a destination device, depending on construction type and number of obstacles:

Z-Wave networks are designed to work alongside 802.11 wireless, Bluetooth, and other 2.4/5.8GHz devices. Some baby cams, wireless video devices, and older 900MHz cordless phones may cause interference. Many 900MHz products have a channel A/B switch — try the other channel if you notice interference.

Mounting

1. Set up and familiarize yourself with the controller's functions before mounting it. It can be mounted with double-sided tape or screws (and hollow wall anchors where necessary) — mounting hardware is included. If using tape, the mounting surface must be smooth and clean. Ideally, mount it at the same height as your wall switches.
2. The faceplate snaps onto the main body after mounting. Remove it by inserting a small flat-blade screwdriver into the bottom slot and twisting gently.

Operation

Note: To prolong battery life, the controller "times out," exits setup, and enters standby (sleep) mode if more than 10 seconds elapses between programming steps.

Copying Network and Device Information (Replication)

Since this is a secondary controller, you must replicate your primary controller's device and network information to it before creating or modifying Groups and Scenes. If the primary controller is a GE-brand handheld remote, device/network info plus the first 4 Groups and Scenes you created can be copied. If it's a different brand (internet gateway, Z-Wave enabled computer, etc.), device/network info is copied but Groups/Scenes may not be — you can create/modify them afterward.

1. Place the two controllers next to each other.
2. Put the primary controller into transfer mode (refer to its manual).
3. Press and hold the Add and Remove buttons together until the orange LED blinks twice.
4. Press and release the OFF side of Group/Scene buttons 1, 2, 3, 4 in sequence (left side of buttons).
5. The orange LED starts blinking.
6. When the orange LED stops blinking and the green LED blinks twice, the transfer was successful.

Adding a Device to a Group

1. Press and hold Add and Remove together until the orange LED blinks twice, then release.
2. Press and release the Add button.
3. Press and release the Group button.
4. Press and release the right side (ON) of the Group/Scene button (1–4) you want to assign the device to. The orange LED starts blinking.
5. Press and release the button on the device you wish to add.
6. The orange LED stops blinking and the green LED blinks twice to confirm success.

Adding a Device to a Scene

1. Press and hold Add and Remove together until the orange LED blinks twice, then release.
2. Press and release Add, then Scene.
3. Press and release the right side (ON) of the Group/Scene button (1–4) you want. The orange LED starts blinking.
4. Press and release the button on the device to add.
5. The orange LED stops blinking and the red LED turns ON, waiting for the next step.
6. Adjust the brightness level on the device.
7. Press and release Add — the red LED turns OFF, then the green LED blinks twice to confirm.

Note: Non-dimmable on/off-only devices can be added to Scenes in either On or Off mode — the same light could be ON in Scene 1 and OFF in Scene 2 (step 6 above is skipped for these devices).

Removing a Device from a Group or Scene

Same process for both — the only difference is which button you press in step 3.

1. Press and hold Add and Remove together until the orange LED blinks twice, then release.
2. Press and release Remove.
3. Press and release the Group or Scene button.
4. Press and release the right side (ON) of the button (1–4) controlling the Group/Scene you want to remove the device from.
5. Press and release the button on the device to remove.
6. The orange LED stops blinking and the green LED blinks twice to confirm.

Controlling Your Devices

1. Press and release the Group or Scene button to enter that control mode — the controller stays in that mode until you switch.
2. Turn the Group or Scene ON by pressing and releasing the right side of the desired button. When activating a Group, GE Z-Wave dimmers turn on to their last brightness level (other brands may act differently). When activating a Scene, dimmers turn on to the brightness level set during scene setup.
3. Turn OFF by pressing and releasing the left side (OFF) of the desired button.

Note: If response time seems slower than normal, a device may have failed or been moved. Use your primary controller to verify device operation, replace any defective devices, and perform a "Network Recovery" to rebuild routing tables, then update the keypad controller.

Excluding This Device from the Network

1. Put the primary controller into device delete mode (refer to its manual).
2. Press and hold Add and Remove together until the orange LED blinks twice, then release.
3. Press and release the On (up arrow) side of the fourth (bottom) Group/Scene button.

Restoring Factory Defaults

This deletes all control network programming stored in the device: press and hold both the left side (OFF) of the #1 Group/Scene button (upper left) and the "Remove" button until the green LED blinks twice (approximately 3–6 seconds, depending on the number of nodes in the network).

Keeping the Controller Awake

To extend battery life, the controller normally sleeps after ~10 seconds of inactivity. To keep it awake (e.g., so another controller can request Version or Manufacturer info):

1. Press and hold Add and Remove for three seconds to enter setup mode.
2. Press and release the right side (up arrows) of the Group/Scene buttons in sequence 1-2-3-4. This keeps the device awake for 30 seconds.

Functional Overview

Based on the Z-Wave Controller Library and Remote Controller Generic Device Class. Supports these Z-Wave Command Classes: Basic Command Class, Binary Switch Command Class, Controller Replication Command Class, and Multi-level Switch Version 1 Command Class. When using Basic Command Class, the controller transmits a value of 0 or 99 depending on the button pressed. As an example of interoperability, the GE 45633 advanced remote with LCD supports command classes for Z-Wave certified door locks, thermostats, and lighting.
