    System Overview

    The system consists of a main control unit, one or more keypads, and various contact sensors/detectors. The control unit (housing the main electronics and backup battery) is typically installed out of sight (closet, utility room, etc.) — only installers/service personnel should need access to it. Keypads are the primary user interface, showing system status via LCD and LED, and are typically installed near primary entry/exit doors.

    Important safety notes:

    • Security depends on the quantity, quality, and placement of sensors, and on the user's knowledge of the system (including weekly testing).
    • This is an electronic device subject to failure or malfunction — don't rely on it as your only source of security.
    • The system will not work without power; test it weekly, including with AC power removed to verify battery charge.
    • Audible warning devices must be loud enough, correctly wired, and properly placed.
    • Smoke/heat detectors may not detect smoke/heat in all situations.
    • Only qualified security professionals should install and maintain this system.
    • Restore AC power after testing.

    Understanding the Keypad

    • Ready Light: ON when all burglar zones are secure and the system can be armed. OFF means one or more zones are violated. FLASHING means the system may be force-armed.
    • Armed Light: ON when the system is armed; arm mode shown on the LCD and via the Exit/Stay lights.
    • Exit Key: lit when armed in Away mode (all perimeter sensors and interior motions active).
    • Stay Key: lit when armed in Stay mode (only perimeter doors/windows active; interior motions excluded).
    • Chime Key: lit when Chime mode is on (a tone/announcement sounds when selected zones open).
    • Bypass Key: lit whenever one or more zones are bypassed/excluded.
    • * Key: clear/reset key (3 presses = master clear).
    • ELK Key: accesses the extended user menus.
    • Function Keys F1–F6: installer-programmable for events (Fire, Police, Medical) or non-alarm uses (gate, lighting, irrigation). The M1KP2 keypad only provides F1–F4.

    Available keypad styles: ELK-M1KP LCD Keypad, ELK-M1KP2 LCD Keypad, and ELK-M1KPAS Arming Station.

    Emergency Activation Keys (if enabled)

    • Fire: activates local fire audibles and notifies the central monitoring center (if monitored). Usually double-press or 2-second hold.
    • Police: activates a silent or audible police/holdup alarm and notifies monitoring, if purchased.
    • Medical: activates a medical alarm condition and notifies monitoring, if purchased.

    Operating the System

    User Codes

    Required for arming, disarming, and authorizing certain features; 4 or 6 digits. If you make a mistake entering a code, press * and re-enter. The system can lock out the keypad after repeated incorrect codes (consult your installer for the allowed number of attempts).

    Checking Ready Status

    If the Ready light is OFF, the display shows "Not Ready x Zn" (x = number of violated zones); secure or bypass those zones before arming. Press the UP arrow to identify violated zones by name/number. Bypassable zones can be excluded by pressing Bypass + zone number + Bypass again. A steady Ready light means "Ready to Arm"; a flashing Ready light means force-armable violated zones can be temporarily excluded (handy for a garage door left open during arming — it re-includes automatically once closed).

    Arming Modes

    • Away: highest arm level for an unoccupied premises — both perimeter and interior zones armed. Secure all doors/windows, enter your user code, and leave during the exit delay (the exit tone speeds up in the last 10 seconds). If you won't make it out in time, return, disarm, and rearm.
    • Vacation: a second level of Away mode for extended absences with energy-saving automation. Press the Exit button during the exit delay to switch to Vacation.
    • Stay: for an occupied premises — perimeter doors/windows armed, interior zones excluded. Enter your code, then press Stay (additional presses may cycle Stay Instant / Stay Night / Stay Night Instant if enabled).
    • Auto Stay Arming (optional): automatically switches from Away to Stay if no delayed perimeter door opens during the exit delay.
    • Quick Arm (optional): press Exit or Stay directly (no code) to arm; disarming always requires a code.
    • Changing Stay modes while armed (optional): press Exit or Stay again to scroll through available Stay levels without disarming.

    Bypassing Zones

    Only zones programmed as bypassable can be excluded, and it may require a user code with bypass authority.

    • Manual bypass: press Bypass, enter the zone number, press Bypass again. The bypass remains until canceled or the system is disarmed.
    • Quick bypass (all violated zones): press Bypass, enter 999, press Bypass again.

    Disarming / Resetting

    Entering through a delayed zone triggers a continuous entry tone and a count-up display. Enter a valid code to stop the tone and disarm before the entry delay expires; otherwise an alarm occurs. After an alarm, entering your code silences it and shows the alarm type/zone; entering the code a second time acknowledges/clears the display. If the alarm was accidental, contact the Central Monitoring Center to prevent a false dispatch.

    Trouble Conditions

    Includes AC power failure, low backup battery, telephone line fault, fire alarm trouble, missing keypad/expander, and communications failure. Troubles beep intermittently and display the condition; press * to silence beeping, then enter a user code to acknowledge.

    Chime Mode

    Provides an audible alert when selected doors/windows/zones are violated (useful for announcing entry/exit or restricted-area access). The full M1 control offers Tone, Voice, Tone/Voice, and Off; the M1EZ8 offers only Tone or Off. Press the Chime key to cycle through modes (each subsequent press within ~30 seconds advances to the next mode). Only the installer can assign which zones are included.

    Keypad Menus

    Press the ELK key (and enter a user code if required) to access menus. Use the arrow keys to scroll/select, or enter a menu number (1–9) to jump directly.

    Menu 1 – View/Control Automation Functions

    Six sub-menus: Tasks, Lighting, Outputs, Temperature Sensors, Keypad Temperature, and Thermostats.

    • Tasks: macro-style actions (e.g., "Water the Lawn" or "Welcome Home") triggered with a single press (press # to activate).
    • Lighting: view/toggle lighting or appliance devices (press # to toggle On/Off).
    • Outputs: view/toggle relay-type outputs (e.g., a pool pump), installer-assigned.
    • Temperature Sensors: read remote temperature sensors.
    • Keypad Temperature Sensors: view the internal temperature sensor of an M1KP keypad (not available on M1KP2).
    • Thermostats: read connected HVAC thermostat temperatures.

    You can jump directly to any entity by entering its 2 or 3-digit number, even if it's not set to display by default.

    Menu 2 – Reset Smoke Detectors

    Resets latched smoke detector circuitry after a fire alarm trip — required before subsequent fire alarms can be detected. Select the menu; the keypad displays a 5-second reset countdown, then beeps twice when complete.

    Menu 3 – Walk Test Area (Zones)

    Locally tests all assigned zones without reporting alarms/troubles. Walk the building and trip every zone; each tested zone's name appears, and the display tracks tested vs. total active zones. Press * to exit when finished.

    Menu 4 – View History Log

    Shows recent system activity with date/time stamps, zone/user code, and area/partition. Use the UP arrow to scroll to earlier events, or enter a 3-digit number to jump.

    Menu 5 – View (Zone) Status

    Displays the current status and name of each zone; scroll with UP/DOWN or jump to a specific zone by its 3-digit number.

    Menu 6 – Change User Codes

    Requires a Master Level User Code. Select a user (by scrolling or entering their number), press RIGHT and enter the new 4- or 6-digit code. A 3-beep confirms acceptance; a long error tone plus "Code Not Authorized" means try again. Names can also be edited using the number keys (each key press cycles through associated letters, similar to old cell phone text entry) — press ELK to save.

    Menu 7 – Automation Custom Settings

    Requires a Master Level User Code. Lets you change start date, start time, or duration for installer-assigned automation functions.

    Menu 8 – System Settings

    Requires a Master Level User Code; mostly for service technicians (except Set Sys Clock). Eight sub-menus:

    • 81 – Set System Clock: enter day (1=Sun...7=Sat), month/day/year, and hour/minute (24-hour format).
    • 82 – OUT1 Voice Adjust Volume: 8 volume levels for internal speaker non-alarm messages. Not applicable to the M1EZ8.
    • 83 – Keypad Adjustments: Beep Tone (0–8), Keypress Beep Volume (0–7), Backlight Level (0–9, dims after 30 seconds of inactivity).
    • 84 – System Tests: Battery Test (30-second load test; replace battery if voltage falls below 12.2V), LCD Test (lights all display pixels), Communicator Test (Silent, Audible, or Monitor/Buttset mode — always notify the monitoring station before testing the communicator).
    • 85 – Connect RP Remote Program: for installer use only — picks up an existing call or dials out to a remote programming computer.
    • 86 – System Diagnostics: for service technicians — data bus errors, system voltage/current, zone voltage, and last on-hook telephone line voltage.
    • 87 – Custom Message Record: up to 10 recordable messages for telephone voice remote/dialer use. Not applicable to the M1EZ8.

    Operation via Telephone (M1 only — not available on the M1EZ8)

    If enabled by your installer, the system can be controlled via touch-tone commands from an inside or outside telephone.

    • Inside phone: lift the handset, press *** to alert the control (it disconnects the dial tone and announces "Please enter security code"), enter your code, then a menu selection (or 0 to hear the full menu).
    • Outside phone: dial in; after the programmed number of rings the control answers with four short beeps (wait out an answering machine message if present), then press *** and proceed as above.

    Menu Selections

    • 0 – Help: explains each key's function.
    • 1 – Arm Status: arm or disarm the system with voice prompts.
    • 2 – Automation Control: control lights, pumps, sprinklers, etc.
    • 3 – Trouble Status: hear any active trouble conditions (low battery, AC loss, etc.).
    • 4 – Zone Status: hear the status of violated zones.
    • 7 – Audio Monitor: listen/talk to someone on the premises (if equipped).
    • 9 – Exit/Hang Up: ends the remote session.

    If no key press is received within 15 seconds, the system announces "Hanging Up, Good-bye" and disconnects. If the phone line is busy with an alarm dialer call, wait for it to release before trying the offhook sequence again. If an alarm occurs, the system automatically seizes the line to report to the monitoring station (telephone remote is inoperable during this), though the installer may allow a short delay window in which you can still call in with *** to disarm/silence the alarm.

    Fire Safety & Maintenance

    If the fire alarm activates, the siren/bell pulses and the display shows "Fire Alarm." Always evacuate immediately per your escape plan, even if a fire isn't obviously apparent. If monitored, an emergency report may be sent automatically; notify the monitoring station if the alarm was accidental.

    • Silencing: enter a valid user code (display continues showing "Fire Alarm" until acknowledged with a second code entry).
    • Resetting smoke detectors: see Menu 2 above.

    Household Fire Safety Audit

    • Check all electrical outlets/appliances for safe, working condition; avoid overloaded circuits; inspect cords for damage.
    • Store flammable liquids safely in ventilated, cool areas in proper containers.
    • Keep lighters, matches, and hazardous materials out of children's reach.
    • Have fireplaces and furnaces professionally serviced and cleaned periodically.

    Emergency Evacuation Plan

    1. Evaluate possible escape routes from your home; select 2 routes per room.
    2. Second-floor rooms should have a rope ladder that reaches the ground.
    3. Sketch and practice your escape plan with everyone in the household.
    4. Establish an outside meeting place; never re-enter a burning building.
    5. Advise your local fire authority that a fire alarm system is installed.
    6. Leave immediately when the fire alarm signals — don't stop for belongings.
    7. Test doors for heat before opening; use an alternate route if hot; crawl through smoke.
    8. Call the fire department from a neighbor's phone if needed.

    System Testing

    Test weekly (contact your monitoring station first if monitored):

    1. Secure all doors/windows, enter your code to arm Away, and wait out the exit delay.
    2. Trip the system by opening a protected window; confirm the siren/bell activates.
    3. Disarm to silence and return to normal.

    To test the standby battery: remove the AC transformer, confirm the keypad shows "AC Trouble" after the delay, then repeat the arm/trip/disarm test above; plug the transformer back in afterward.

    A non-disruptive manual battery load test is also available via Menu 8 > 84 System Tests > Battery Test — the battery is OK if it holds above 12.2V during the 30-second test.

    FCC Statements (Part 15 & 68)

    The ELK-M1 complies with FCC Part 68 (an FCC certification number and Ringer Equivalence Number are on the main control board's nameplate; total REN on a phone line should not exceed 5.0) and FCC Part 15 (residential interference protection). There are no user-serviceable components; all repairs must be performed by the manufacturer or an authorized service company.     Glossary

    • Area (Partition): a section of the building with its own keypad(s) and zone(s), independently arm/disarm-able from other areas.
    • Automation Functions: keypad menu for controlling lights, relays, tasks, etc.
    • Bypass: temporarily excluding a zone from monitoring.
    • Central Monitoring Station: location where alarm reports are transmitted.
    • Chime: audible alert (tone, voice, or both) when a selected zone is violated.
    • Duress Code: a special code that disarms the system while silently reporting an alarm to the monitoring station.
    • Event Log: a time/date-stamped record of recent system activity.
    • User Code: a 4- or 6-digit number used to identify and authorize an operator.
    • Zone: a single monitored element (door, window, motion detector, etc.).
