GE 34911/34456 Universal Remote Control — Instruction Manual

Instruction manual for the GE 34911/34456 Universal Remote Control (model 24991), which controls multiple audio/video devices — TV, VCR, DVD, DVR/AUX, cable, and satellite — from a single remote.

Setup

Battery Installation

1. Requires two (2) AAA alkaline batteries (not included).
2. On the back of the remote, push down on the tab and lift the cover off.
3. Match the (+) and (-) marks on the batteries to those in the compartment; insert two fresh AAA alkaline batteries.
4. Press the battery cover back into place.

Battery precautions: Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargeable (Ni-Cd, Ni-MH) batteries. Always remove old/weak/worn-out batteries promptly and recycle/dispose per local regulations.

Battery Saver: The remote automatically turns off if buttons are depressed for more than 8 seconds — this protects battery life if the remote gets stuck somewhere (e.g. between sofa cushions).

Code Saver: You have up to 10 minutes to change batteries without losing programmed codes. Do NOT press any buttons until batteries are reinstalled — pressing buttons with no batteries installed will erase all codes.

Button Functions

• TV, CBL/SAT, DVR/AUX, DVD: Selects the device to control. Red indicator lights when any button is pressed.
• RECORD, PLAY, STOP, REW, FF, PAUSE — standard transport controls.
• EXIT: Exits on-screen menus / returns to the previous selection.
• CHANNEL UP/DOWN, VOLUME UP/DOWN
• INPUT: Selects video input source.
• NUMBERS: Direct channel entry (some devices require ENTER afterward).
• DOT: Selects digital sub-channels (e.g. 2.3).
• ON/OFF: Turns devices on or off.
• MUTE: Mutes TV sound (picture remains).
• OK: Selects on-screen menu items.
• INFO: Displays/selects on-screen channel information.
• MENU: Press and release SHIFT/SETUP then MENU/INFO to display the on-screen menu.
• SETUP: Used to set up the remote and for the code search function.
• SHIFT: Accesses secondary (reverse-print) button functions — OK, MENU, EXIT.
• ENTER: On some TVs, confirms a direct channel number entry.

Programming Your Remote

Two ways to program: Direct Code Entry (recommended) or Auto Code Search. Up to three devices can be programmed.

Direct Code Entry (Recommended)

1. Locate the Remote Code List (in the printed manual/insert). Find your device category (TV, DVD, CBL/SAT, DVR/AUX) and your brand; circle all codes listed for that brand.
2. Manually turn on the device you want to control.
3. Press and hold SETUP until the red indicator stays on (~4 seconds), then release.
4. Press and release the desired device button (TV, DVD, CBL/SAT, DVR/AUX). The red indicator blinks once, then stays on.
5. Enter the first 4-digit code from the code list using the number buttons. If valid, the red indicator turns off; if invalid, it flashes and stays on so you can re-enter. If no button is pressed within 10 seconds, SETUP mode exits and you must start over.
6. Point the remote at the device and press POWER — if the device turns off, programming is complete for that device. If not, repeat from step 3 with the next code on the list.
7. Repeat this whole process for each device you want to control.

Programming notes:

• If no code works or your brand isn't listed, use Auto Code Search instead.
• The first working code may only control some functions — try other codes from the list for full functionality.
• Any device button can be programmed to control any device type (e.g. use DVR/AUX to control an audio receiver).
• For combo devices (e.g. VCR/DVD), you may need to enter separate codes for each part under different device buttons.
• Write down the working code for future reference.

Auto Code Search

Searches automatically through all codes stored in the remote. Read all steps before starting, since you'll need to lock in the code quickly once found.

1. Manually turn on the device you want to control.
2. Press and hold SETUP until the red indicator stays on (~4 seconds), then release.
3. Press and release the desired device button. The red indicator blinks once, then stays on.
4. Point the remote at the device and press POWER (for TV) or PLAY (for DVD/VCR) to start the search. The indicator flashes roughly every 2 seconds as it searches — keep the remote pointed at the device.
5. Place your finger on the #1 button, ready to lock in the code.
6. When the device shuts off (or begins playing), press #1 immediately to lock in the code — you have about 2 seconds to do this. The red indicator turns off.
7. Point the remote at the device and test. If it works, you're done for that device; if not, return to step 2 and restart the search.
8. Repeat for each device you want to control (up to three).

Programming notes: This may take several minutes since the remote holds many codes. The correct device button must be selected before searching. Press SETUP mid-search to reverse the search direction if you miss the right code. Continue searching if the first working code doesn't cover all functions — a better code may exist further in the list.

Using Your Remote

Controlling Combo Devices

Combo devices (TV/VCR, TV/DVD, DVD/VCR, etc.) often need two different mode buttons programmed — one code under (for example) the TV button for the TV part, and a separate code under another mode button for the DVD/VCR part.

Using SHIFT for Menu and Navigation

The SHIFT button unlocks secondary functions printed in reverse print on certain buttons:

• MENU: Press SHIFT/SETUP, then INFO/MENU
• OK: Press SHIFT/SETUP, then MUTE/OK
• EXIT: Press SHIFT/SETUP, then LAST/EXIT
• Navigation (Up/Down/Left/Right): Press SHIFT/SETUP, then the corresponding Channel or Volume button

The remote stays in shift mode until SHIFT is pressed again or after 10 seconds of inactivity.

Master Volume Feature

Lets you designate a single device (e.g. an audio receiver) that the volume buttons always control, even while the remote is in another device's mode (e.g. TV mode).

Enabling:

1. Press and hold SETUP until the red indicator stays on (~4 seconds), release.
2. Press and release the device button for the device you want the volume buttons to control.
3. Press and release MUTE.
4. Press and release VOL — the indicator blinks twice, then turns off.

Test by switching to another mode (e.g. TV), pointing at the target device (e.g. audio receiver), and pressing VOL — if that device's volume changes, it's set up correctly.

Disabling: Same steps 1-4 as enabling — repeat the process on the device currently set as the Master Volume device to turn it off.

Code Identification

To find out what 4-digit code is currently programmed for a device:

1. Press and hold SETUP until the red indicator stays on (~4 seconds), release.
2. Press and release the device button you want the code for.
3. Press and release ENTER.
4. Press and release #1 — count the flashes for the first digit. Repeat with #2, #3, #4 for the remaining digits.
5. Press and release ENTER to exit.

Reset to Factory Settings

1. Press and hold SETUP until the red indicator stays on (~4 seconds), release.
2. Press and release MUTE.
3. Press and release the #0 button — the indicator flashes twice, confirming the reset.
