  • Enbrighten ZW3012 (52252) — In-Wall No-Neutral Smart Dimmer Instruction Manual

    August 31, 2026 5 min read

Instruction manual for the Enbrighten In-Wall No-Neutral Smart Dimmer (Model ZW3012 / Item 52252), a Z-Wave certified dimmer for installations without a neutral wire.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Instruction manual for the Enbrighten In-Wall No-Neutral Smart Dimmer (Model ZW3012 / Item 52252) — a Z-Wave certified smart dimmer designed for installations without a neutral wire, controlling incandescent or dimmable CFL/LED bulbs.

    Key Features

    • No neutral wire required
    • Turn ON/OFF and adjust dim levels manually or remotely via a Z-Wave controller
    • May be used in single-pole installation or with up to four Enbrighten add-on switches in 3-way or 4-way wiring configurations
    • Compatible with all incandescent and most dimmable CFL/LED bulbs
    • Interchangeable paddle switch — white & light almond paddles included
    • Uses a standard, rocker-style wallplate for single-gang installations (wallplate not included)
    • Blue LED indicates dimmer location in a dark room
    • Z-Wave certified for simple pairing and integrated home automation
    • Screw terminal installation — requires wiring connections for line (hot), load, and ground; traveler wire required for 3-way/4-way installations

    Critical Safety Warnings

    • RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRICAL SHOCK, AND BURNS. Only use to control incandescent or dimmable CFL/LED bulbs — do not exceed ratings.
    • Do not install to control a receptacle, motor-operated appliance, fluorescent lighting fixture, or transformer-supplied appliance.
    • Do not use to control any device where unintended operation could cause unsafe conditions (heat lamp, sun lamp, etc.).
    • For indoor use only.
    • Not for use with medical or life-support equipment. Z-Wave enabled devices should never be used to supply power to or control the on/off status of medical or life-support equipment.

    Installation

Before installation: Confirm the bulb is dimmable and in working order — the switch is not functional without a complete circuit. Turn OFF power to the branch circuit for the dimmer and lighting fixture at the service panel before making any wiring connections. This installation should follow the National Electric Code and local regulations (or the Canadian Electrical Code in Canada). If unsure, consult a qualified electrician.

    Wire Requirements

    • Rated for and intended to only be used with copper wire.
    • Use 14AWG or larger wire suitable for at least 80°C for line (hot), load, ground, and traveler connections.
    • Strip insulation 5/8 in. (16mm) for attachment using the enclosure's holes.
    • UL specifies a tightening torque of 14 Kgf-cm (12 lbf-in) for the terminal screws.

    Single-Switch Wiring Steps

    1. Shut off power to the circuit at the breaker or fuse box, and verify power is OFF before continuing.
    2. Remove the wallplate and switch mounting screws, then carefully remove the existing switch from the box (do not disconnect the wires yet).
    3. Identify the up to four screw terminals: A) Ground — Green/Bare, B) Line or Load — Black, C) Line or Load — Black, D) Traveler — Red/Other (3-way installations only). Match these to your existing wiring.
    4. Disconnect the wires from the existing switch, labeling them by terminal.
    5. Connect the green or bare copper ground wire to the GROUND terminal.
    6. Connect the black wire from the light to either LINE/LOAD terminal, and the black wire from the panel (hot) to the other LINE/LOAD terminal. Insert wires into the terminal holes — do not wrap around screws, and do not remove the screws.
    7. Note: The traveler terminal is used only for 3-way/4-way wiring — do not use it in a 2-way (single switch) installation.
    8. Insert the dimmer into the switch box, being careful not to pinch or crush wires. The dimmer must be independently mounted (vertical position only).
    9. Secure the dimmer to the box with the supplied screws, then mount the wallplate.
    10. Reapply power at the breaker/fuse box and test the system.

For 3-way or 4-way multi-switch installations, use the Enbrighten add-on switch (model 46199) and refer to its manual — do not connect the traveler wire or apply power until add-on switches are correctly installed, or it will cause damage or improper function.

    Basic Operation

    • Turn ON: Press and release the top of the rocker.
    • Turn OFF: Press and release the bottom of the rocker.
    • Dim up/down: Press and hold the top (brighten) or bottom (dim) of the rocker.

Guide Light / Status LED Cycling

Press up three times and down once quickly to cycle through LED options:

    1. LED is ON when the load is OFF (guide light in the dark) — default
    2. LED is ON when the load is ON (indicates dimmer is ON)
    3. LED is always OFF
    4. LED is always ON (illuminates dimmer in the dark)

    Adjustable Brightness Thresholds

Not all LED bulbs behave the same across dimmer brands, which can cause flickering or strobing. This dimmer allows setting minimum and maximum brightness thresholds:

    • Minimum dim threshold: Press OFF four times, then ON once quickly. Adjust with the rocker until the desired minimum brightness is reached without flickering; the LED stops flashing 10 seconds after release to confirm (Z-Wave parameter 30, values 1-99, default 1).
    • Maximum brightness threshold: Press ON four times, then OFF once quickly. Adjust similarly (Z-Wave parameter 31, values 1-99, default 99).

    Z-Wave Network Setup

    • Adding to a network: Follow your Z-Wave controller's instructions to add a device, then press and release the top or bottom of the rocker when prompted. If prompted for the S2 security code, use the 5-digit PIN from the QR code/security number on the box or product label.
    • Removing from a network: Follow the controller's instructions to remove a device, then press and release the top or bottom of the rocker.
    • SmartStart: Products can be added by scanning the QR code with a controller supporting SmartStart inclusion — the device is added automatically within 10 minutes of being switched on near the network.
    • Factory reset: Quickly press ON (top) three times, then immediately press OFF (bottom) three times. The LED will flash ON/OFF five times when successful. Use only if the network's primary controller is missing or inoperable.

This device supports the Association Command Class (3 groups): Group 1 (Lifeline, Multi-level Switch report), Group 2 (Basic Set, controlled by local load), Group 3 (Basic Set, controlled by double-pressing ON/OFF). Each group supports up to 5 nodes.

    Changing the Paddle Color

    1. Lift the air gap tab at the base of the paddle.
    2. Push side tabs in on one side, then the other, to release the paddle; lift the cover up and off.
    3. Snap the new paddle onto the dimmer by inserting the air gap and side tabs.
