    Installation and application manual for the ELK-960 Delay Timer, an economical, flexible SPDT relay timer module for general-purpose time delay applications (door strikes, maglocks, exit delays, light control, alarm cut-off, and more).

    Overview

    The ELK-960 features an adjustable delay time from 1 second to approximately 60 minutes. It operates on 12 to 24 volts D.C. and can be triggered by either a negative (−) or positive (+) voltage.

    • BEGIN mode: relay turns on when triggered and back off when the delay time expires.
    • END mode: relay turns off when triggered and back on when the delay time expires.
    • A mode: delay time starts when the trigger is removed.
    • B mode: delay time starts when the trigger is first applied.
    • The relay can be set to a single 1-SHOT output, or REPEAT (pulse on and off). All options are set via mini-jumpers.

    Terminal Descriptions

    Terminal Description
    + Positive power input — connect +12 to +24 VDC. Do not exceed +24 VDC or damage will occur.
    Negative power (ground) input — connect to the negative/ground terminal of the power source.
    TGR Trigger voltage input, 4.5 to 24VDC (independent of the 12-24VDC main power). Set jumper JP5 to "+" to trigger from positive voltage, or "−" for negative.
    N/O Normally Open relay contact — no connection to COM when the relay is off.
    COM Common/pole relay contact — internally connected to N/C when off, or N/O when on.
    N/C Normally Closed relay contact — internally connected to COM when the relay is off.

    Note: the ELK-960 automatically triggers and runs through a delay cycle on first power-up. To speed up installation, set jumper JP1 to SEConds and R3 to 1 before applying power, then adjust settings as required afterward.

    Settings and Jumper Descriptions

    Control Function
    R3 (knob) Adjusts delay time from 1 to 60 (units set by JP1). Full clockwise = 1, halfway = 30, full counter-clockwise = 60.
    JP1 SEC = delay time in seconds (1-60); MIN = delay time in minutes (1-60). Times are approximate — at the highest setting (60 min) actual delay will be slightly greater.
    JP2 REPEAT = relay cycles ON/OFF at the delay interval using a 50/50 duty cycle (a trigger input temporarily stops the cycle); 1-SHOT = relay activates only once per trigger.
    JP3 END = relay turns off when triggered, back on when delay expires; BEGIN = relay turns on when triggered, back off when delay expires.
    JP4 A = delay time starts when trigger is removed; B = delay time starts when trigger is first applied.
    JP5 "+" = positive polarity input trigger; "−" = negative polarity input trigger.

    Hint: for a delay in minutes, first adjust and test with JP1 in the SEConds position (e.g. for a 15-minute delay, set/test to 15 seconds), then move JP1 to MINutes — this gives a quick, reasonably accurate equivalent delay in minutes.

    Sample Applications

    1. Door Strike Hold Timer

    Extends the release time of an access control device, or manually activates a door strike release. The trigger is activated by a contact closure or N/O pushbutton, and the door strike stays activated (door open) after the button is released, for the delay time set on the ELK-960.

    2. Maglock Release Timer

    Same concept as above, but for a door maglock — the maglock remains released (door open) after the button is released, for the configured delay time.

    3. Door Prop Alarm Timer

    Delay starts when the door is opened. If the door remains open after the delay expires, the relay turns on (e.g. triggering a siren) and stays on until the door is closed. If the door closes before the delay expires, the ELK-960 resets and awaits the next door contact input.

    4. Automatic Light Control

    For turning on an interior or exterior light with a motion detector. When motion is detected, the ELK-960 triggers and the light turns on; the amount of time the light stays on after the detector resets is adjustable, and the delay automatically restarts each time the motion detector re-activates.

    5. Exit Delay Shunt Timer

    Provides an exit delay for an otherwise instant alarm loop. The ELK-960 is triggered by the control panel's Armed output; the door contact is shunted by the relay contacts while the user exits. After the delay time expires, the door contact is restored into the loop.

    6. Instant Activation of Zone with Delayed Restoral

    When a contact opens, the relay turns on, causing an instant zone violation. Contact reclosure cancels the trigger applied by the resistor; the delay starts when the contact closes, and the relay turns off (restoring the zone) after the delay expires.

    7. Alarm Cut-Off Timer

    Useful for adding a cut-off timer to a control panel that lacks one, or for shortening the cut-off timer on a panel with no adjustable timer.

    8. Bell or Light Flasher

    Converts a steady output into a pulsing signal, suitable for flashing a light or pulsing an audible device. Note: the alarm output must be able to supply enough current to drive the connected bell/light.

    9. Using Two ELK-960 Units to Delay Then Toggle a Relay

    Used for delaying a trigger and then toggling a relay on/off. Unit #1 starts a time delay when its N/O switch closes. When Unit #1's delay expires, it triggers Unit #2, which turns its relay ON for its own delay setting, then turns it back OFF (toggle). In summary: trigger #1 → wait → turn on #2's relay → wait → turn off #2's relay.
