Instruction Sheet for the ELK-M1KPNAV Navigator Touchscreen Keypad, a 3.5" color LCD touchscreen keypad for the Elk M1 Control System, connecting via the RS485 data bus.

    Introduction

Navigator is a stylish touch screen keypad for use with the M1 Control System. It features a touch-sensitive 3.5" LCD color display with bright, easy-to-use graphic icons and softkeys. Connection to the M1 panel is via the RS485 bus, making it simple for new or retrofit installations.

    • Hi-contrast LCD touchscreen display
    • Six (6) programmable Function Keys
    • Unique "Menu" navigation
    • Operates on 4-wire RS485 data bus
    • Built-in piezo sounder with adjustable pitch
    • One (1) supervised zone input
    • One (1) "switched positive" voltage output

Navigator is designed and manufactured in Australia for Elk Products by Ness Corporation.

    Firmware & Software Requirements

Note: M1 firmware v5.2.8 or later is required for Navigator to synchronize and display the names of Areas, F Keys, Lights, Outputs, and Tasks. ElkRP software v2.0.10 or later is recommended when programming an M1 system that includes a Navigator.

    Mounting

Navigator can be wall-mounted without a pre-wire box. If a pre-wire box is used, it must be a single-gang electrical box designed for "New Work," and should be installed sideways (horizontal). Single-gang boxes designed for "Old Work" have a wider outer trim dimension and may not be suitable — test fit before installation.

    1. Separate the Navigator front assembly from the backplate by gently inserting a small flat blade screwdriver into each of the four locking slots, one at a time, until the front releases. Avoid touching or damaging exposed components, and do not bend or pull on the flat ribbon cable that loops over the bottom edge and plugs into the back of the board.
    2. Insert the data bus cable through the marked entry. Position the backplate level on the surface with TOP facing up.
    3. Install a minimum of two screws in the mounting holes provided.

An optional surface box (ELK-M1BBKN) is available for use on concrete or block (non-hollow) surfaces, or where a wire raceway is needed.

    Wiring Connections

Splice the four wires on the plug-in cable to the Data Bus Cable wires from the control. Use "B" connector splices, or solder and tape the connections.

    • Black (−)
    • White (B)
    • Green (A)
    • Red (+)

4-conductor data bus cable (CAT5 strongly recommended). Connector J1 has two pins marked "RS485" — a jumper shunt is provided for placement on these pins ONLY if this keypad is the last device on the data bus. Do not place the jumper on any other pins of J1.

Optional programmable output from keypad: connect the load (e.g., LED, relay, 50mA max) to the Brown wire (+) and Black/Neg wire (−).

Optional programmable zone input from keypad: connect to the Blue wire and Black/Neg wire, with a 2200 Ohm EOL resistor (N.C./N.O. as required). The optional zone number and output number are determined by the keypad address, per the table below.

Keypad Address → Zone/Output Number Mapping

Keypad Address Zone # Output #
    1 193 193
    2 194 194
    3 195 195
    4 196 196
    5 197 197
    6 198 198
    7 199 199
    8 200 200
    9 201 201
    10 202 202
    11 203 203
    12 204 204
    13 205 205
    14 206 206
    15 207 207
    16 208 208

Note: Connector TB1 (6-pin) is for the 6-wire keypad cable assembly. TB2 (3-pin) is for a special RS232 cable (sold separately) used by an optional PC software utility for flashing firmware and/or quickly setting up the Installer Information page — call Elk for details.

    If using CAT5/CAT6 cable and an ELK-M1DBH Hub, use the Brn/Wht → Red(+), Wht/Brn → Black(−), Org/Wht → Green(A), Grn/Wht → White(B) pairs. The blue pair is not used.

    Re-attaching Front to Backplate

    1. Plug the 6-wire cable assembly into connector TB1 on the board. The polarity ribs should face the side gap. When removing this cable, always grip the connector body itself — do not tug or pull on the wires. Tuck loose cable and splices out of the way.
    2. Position the bottom edge of Navigator inside the lower ledge of the backplate, then rotate the top back towards the wall. Gently press until the 4 snaps engage in the slots. Do not force it — if the units don't snap together, start over and check for loose wires or connections that may be interfering.

    Start-Up Screen

On power-up, the Start-Up screen displays the keypad number enrolled in the panel, the firmware version, the M1 serial number, and the data bus address only if the keypad currently has an address set. The Start-Up screen displays until all current status data is collected from the M1 panel; it then moves to the Main User screen.

    Data Bus Enrollment

If the keypad address doesn't match one currently enrolled in the M1 (or has never been enrolled), the message "Please enroll keypad into panel" displays. Perform a bus enrollment using an already-enrolled keypad or the ElkRP Remote Program software.

If a keypad address isn't currently set, the message "Please Set Keypad Address" displays at the bottom. Otherwise, "Waiting to connect to panel" displays until Navigator receives valid data from the panel. Once the keypad receives valid data (and is enrolled), it displays "Synchronising Panel Status."

    Change (Set Keypad) Address

Each keypad connected to an M1 must have its own unique address, distinct from any other keypad on the system.

    1. Press "CHANGE ADDRESS" on the Start-Up screen to open the Set Keypad Address screen.
    2. The current keypad address is illuminated. Any address with a red border indicates a keypad already enrolled to the M1 panel — red-bordered addresses cannot be used for this keypad.
    3. Press any unused keypad address button to select that address for this keypad.

Default Keypad button: clears the keypad address, M1 serial number, function key names, task names, lighting names, output names, and area names. It does NOT clear installer information.

EXIT: press this button or the red "X" in the top right corner to exit the Set Keypad Address screen.

    Main User Screen

The Main User Screen is displayed once startup and synchronization complete.

    MENU Screen – Synchronise

If programming changes are made to the M1, perform a manual Synchronise to update Area, Task, Lighting, Output, and Function (F) Key names. On the Main Screen, press "MENU," then "Next Page" to locate the Synchronise button. Press "Synchronise" and then "START" to synchronise and upload all the names.

    MENU Screen – "Information"

Contact information for the installation company can be entered and stored in Navigator, providing customer contact information for system expansions, future sales, or customer service. This screen displays whenever the "Information" button is pressed on the Menu Screen. Installer Information can only be edited from the Installation Programming Menu, accessible using the Installer Program Code. To return to the Menu screen, press "MENU"; to return to the Main User screen, press the red "X" or "Exit Menu."

    Installer Programming

To use Navigator for programming the M1 Control, press "Installation Programming" on the Main Menu screen. Installer Programming Menus are organized on 2 pages. Detailed programming information for the M1 can be found in the M1 Installation & Programming Manual.
