    Installation instructions for the Elk ELK-M1KP2 and ELK-M1KP3 addressable LCD keypads, used with the M1 and M1EZ8 Cross Platform Controls.

    Overview

    • 32-character blue/white backlighted LCD display, blue lighted keys, and 4 programmable function keys.
    • ELK-M1KP2: surface mount with or without a 1 or 2 gang electrical box, or flush mount with the separately purchased ELK-M1BBK2 back box kit.
    • ELK-M1KP3: surface mount only (no electrical box); features a hinged door over the keys.
    • Both accept the Elk-106055 external proximity reader (26-bit Wiegand) for card/fob arming, disarming, or door strike control. Other 26-bit Wiegand readers may be compatible.

    Installation and Enrollment of Keypad

    • Ideal mounting height: 50–58 inches above the floor. Ambient temperature range: 32°–120°F (0°–+49°C). Avoid direct sunlight.
    • CAT5 or CAT6 (4 pair, 8 conductor) wire is highly recommended for data bus cabling — extra pairs may be needed for data return paths with multiple homeruns. Refer to the M1/EZ8 Installation Manual for data bus termination when multiple homerun cables are used.
    • Minimum conductor size: 22 or 24 gauge. Maximum resistance per wire: 25 Ohms. Device placement beyond 1000' is not recommended.
    • DO NOT SPLICE OR CONNECT WIRES WITH THE CONTROL POWER ON.
    1. Fasten the mounting plate to the electrical box (or directly to the wall) using flat head screws to prevent shorts to the back of the circuit board.
    2. Splice the Black, Red, White, and Green wires of the plug-in connector to the data bus cable. Plug the connector into the keypad, tuck wires into the back plate, install the keypad on the mounting plate with the provided #4 plastite screws, and snap on the picture-frame trim ring with the notched edge facing down.

    Setting the Data Bus Address and Enrolling Devices

    Keypads and expander devices communicate over the RS-485 4-wire data bus. Each device needs a unique address (1–16) within its device type — keypads are Type 1, input/zone expanders Type 2, output expanders Type 3, etc. Addresses can repeat across different device types but never within the same type (e.g., no two keypads on like addresses).

    Setting the address (factory default is address 1; valid range 1–16; Keypad 1 auto-enrolls on power-up, additional keypads need a unique address and manual enrollment):

    1. Press and hold the * key for 10 seconds until the LCD shows "Exit when done. F1 Set Addr." (Keypad setup mode). This mode can also be reached by unplugging the data bus cable and reapplying power while holding any key.
    2. Press F1 to display the current address.
    3. Enter the desired address number.
    4. Press Exit when done.

    Enrolling into the system:

    1. Press ELK/MENU, then 9 (or scroll up) for "9 - Installation Programming," then press the RIGHT arrow. Enter the Installer Program Code (PIN) when prompted (see M1 Manual for the default code).
    2. The first menu shown is "Bus Module Enrollment." Press RIGHT arrow to select it — "Enrolling Bus Modules" displays.
    3. The M1 transmits an enrollment message to all data bus devices, then shows the total enrolled Bus Modules. Press RIGHT arrow to view/edit enrolled devices.
    4. Press * or Exit to leave Installer Programming.

    Data Bus Termination — Important

    • Ideal setup: 2 home-run cables with daisy-chained devices. The last device on each cable must have its terminating resistor jumper (JP1) installed with the black shorting cap, adding a 120 Ohm resistor across data lines A & B.
    • If there is only 1 data bus cable, place a shorting cap on JP3 of the Main Board instead.
    • WARNING: The RS-485 data bus must never have more than two (2) terminating resistor jumpers installed — reliability and response are negatively affected if exceeded.
    • Max data bus length: 4,000 ft. Max bus devices vary by control.
    • Data bus wiring: RED = +VKP, GREEN = Data A, WHITE = Data B, BLACK = NEG, plus EGND. J1/J2 are temporary "plug-in" jacks for local testing connections only.
    • For multiple home-run cables, the recommended approach is an ELK-M1DBH Data Bus Hub — accepts CAT5/CAT6 with RJ45 plugs and handles series-connecting Data A & B lines cleanly.

    Keypad Hookup Wiring

    Splice data bus cable wires to the keypad assembly using ELK-900-2 "B" connectors. The ELK-W034A 6-wire keypad cable assembly carries Black, White, Green, Red, Blue, and Brown conductors to the M1KP2/M1KP3. The Blue and Brown wires support an optional programmable zone input (2200 Ohm N.C./N.O. EOL resistor to Black/Blue) and an optional programmable output (50mA max load to Black/Brown) on the keypad. The Zone/Output device ID is based on the keypad address (e.g., Keypad address 1 → Zone/Output ID 193, address 2 → 194, continuing sequentially through address 16 → 208).

    Installing an External Proximity Card Reader (Optional)

    1. Turn off control panel power. Remove the keypad from its mounting plate and disconnect the 6-wire cable assembly.
    2. Splice the Red (+) and Black (–) wires from the external prox reader to the Red and Black wires of the data bus/6-wire cable assembly.
    3. Splice the Green (Data 0) and White (Data 1) wires from the external prox reader to the Green and White wires of the ELK-W039A 2-wire cable assembly, and plug into connector J2.
    4. Turn on the M1 Master Power Switch and follow the instructions for enrolling cards or fobs.

    Enrolling Prox Cards and Fobs

    Prox cards/fobs enroll into a User Code location the same way as User Code PINs:

    1. Press ELK/Menu, then 6 (or scroll up) for "6 - Change User Codes," then RIGHT arrow. Enter the Master user code (PIN) to access.
    2. Enter the 3-digit User Code location (001–099) or scroll with UP/DOWN, then select CHG (RIGHT arrow).
    3. The keypad displays any existing code and name programmed for that user.
    4. Present a new (not previously enrolled) prox card/fob to the reader — on success, the keypad beeps 3 times and displays the card/fob's 12-digit ID.
    5. If rejected, a low error tone and "Code Not Authorized, Redo" display. Common causes: the card/fob is already enrolled (duplicates not allowed), or its facility code doesn't match the reader's facility code.
    6. Once enrolled, the card/fob's capabilities (Arm, Disarm, or Access event) are set via User Code Options in Menu 02 of Installer Level Programming.

    An Access event fires when a valid prox card/fob (with the Access option enabled) is read at a keypad — it does nothing by itself unless referenced in a Whenever/And/Then Rule from Elk-RP software. Example rule: WHENEVER Keypad 01 Access is Activated, THEN Turn On Output 003 for 10 seconds — useful for momentarily energizing a door strike.
