ELK-M1 Gold / M1EZ8 Cross Platform Controller — User Guide

User guide for the ELK-M1 Gold and M1EZ8 Cross Platform Controllers — a security/automation system consisting of a main control unit, one or more keypads, and various contact sensors and detectors.

Important: This system is an electronic device subject to failure or malfunction — do not rely on it as your sole source of security. It will not work without power and should be tested weekly. Only qualified security professionals should install and maintain this system.

Understanding the Keypad

• Ready Light: ON when all burglar zones are secure and OK to arm. OFF means one or more zones are violated. FLASHING indicates the system may be force-armed.
• Armed Light: ON when the system is armed; arm mode shown on the LCD and via Exit/Stay pushbuttons.
• Exit Key: Lit when armed in Away mode (all perimeter sensors and interior motions active).
• Stay Key: Lit when armed in Stay mode (only perimeter doors/windows active; interior motions excluded).
• Chime Key: Lit when Chime mode is on — a tone/announcement plays when selected zones open.
• Bypass Key: Lit when one or more zones are bypassed.
• * Key: Clear/reset key — clears entry errors; 3 presses = master clear.
• ELK Key: Accesses the extended user menus.
• Function Keys F1–F6: Installer-programmable for emergencies (Fire, Police, Medical) or non-alarm uses (gate, lighting, irrigation). Note: the M1KP2 LCD Keypad only provides F1–F4.

Available keypad styles: ELK-M1KP LCD Keypad, ELK-M1KP2 LCD Keypad, ELK-M1KPAS Arming Station.

Operating the System

User Codes

Required for arming, disarming, and authorizing features. Codes are 4 or 6 digits. If a mistake is made, press the asterisk key and re-enter. The system can be set to temporarily lock out the keypad after repeated incorrect entries.

Checking Ready Status

• Ready light off: one or more zones violated — display shows "Not Ready x Zn." Press UP repeatedly to identify violated zones by name/number.
• Ready light on steady: system ready to arm — "Ready to Arm."
• Ready light flashing: system can be armed with force-armable violated zones temporarily excluded; they auto-reinclude once secured (useful for garage doors).

Arming Modes

• Away Mode: Highest arm level, both perimeter and interior zones armed. Secure all doors/windows, enter a user code, and leave during the exit delay.
• Vacation Mode: A second level of Away mode for extended absences — activates energy-saving automation. Press Exit during the exit delay to switch to vacation mode.
• Stay Mode: For occupied premises — only perimeter doors/windows armed, interior zones excluded. Enter a user code, then press Stay. Additional presses (if enabled) cycle Stay Instant, Stay Night, Stay Night Instant.
• Auto Stay Arming (optional): Automatically switches from Away to Stay if no delayed perimeter door opens during the exit countdown.
• Quick Arm (optional): Arms in Away or Stay by pressing Exit/Stay without a user code (a code is still always required to disarm).
• Changing Stay Modes While Armed (optional): Press Exit or Stay to scroll additional Stay levels without disarming first.

Bypassing Zones

• Manual bypass: Press Bypass, enter the zone number, press Bypass again. Only bypassable zones can be excluded; may require an authorized user code.
• Quick bypass of all violated zones: Press Bypass, enter 999, press Bypass again.

Disarming & Resetting

Enter a valid user code at the keypad within the entry delay time to disarm. If an alarm has occurred, the display shows the alarm type and tripped zone until the user code is entered a second time to acknowledge. If you're certain an alarm was accidental, contact the Central Monitoring Center to avoid a false dispatch.

Trouble Conditions

Annunciated by intermittent beeping and display of the condition: AC Power Failure, Low Backup Battery, Telephone Line Fault, Fire Alarm Trouble, Missing Keypad/Expander, Communications Fail. Silence beeping with the * key; the trouble must be acknowledged (enter a user code) before other keypad operations continue.

Chime Mode

Provides an audible alert when selected zones (doors/windows) are violated. The M1 control offers Tone, Voice, Tone/Voice, and Off; the M1EZ8 offers Tone or Off only. Press the Chime key to cycle through modes (each press within ~30 seconds advances to the next mode).

Keypad Menus (via the ELK key)

Press ELK (entering a user code if required), then use the arrow keys to navigate. Press a number 1–9 to jump directly to a menu.

• Menu 1 — View/Control Automation Functions: 6 sub-menus: Tasks (macros triggering multiple actions with one key press), Lighting (view/toggle lighting devices), Outputs (view/toggle relay outputs), Temperature Sensors, Keypad Temperature Sensors, and Thermostats.
• Menu 2 — Reset Smoke Detectors: Required after a fire alarm trip to re-arm smoke detector circuitry for subsequent detection. Select the menu; the keypad displays a 5-second reset countdown, confirmed by two beeps.
• Menu 3 — Walk Test: Locally tests all zones without triggering alarms/troubles — walk the building and trip each zone; the display tracks tested vs. total zones.
• Menu 4 — View History Log: Displays the most recent system events with date/time stamps, zone/user code, and area/partition.
• Menu 5 — View Zone Status: Displays current status and name for each zone; jump directly by entering a 3-digit zone number.
• Menu 6 — Change User Codes (requires Master code): Select a user, enter new 4- or 6-digit code; also allows editing user names via number-key letter selection.
• Menu 7 — Automation Custom Settings (requires Master code): Modify start date/time/duration of installer-assigned automation functions.
• Menu 8 — System Settings (requires Master code, primarily for service technicians): includes Set System Clock, Voice Volume Adjust, Keypad Adjustments (beep tone, volume, backlight), System Tests (Battery/LCD/Communicator), Remote Programming connection, System Diagnostics, and Custom Message Recording.

Operation via Telephone

Not available on the M1EZ8. The system can be controlled from an inside or outside telephone using touch-tone commands.

• Inside telephone: Lift the handset, press *** to alert the control, enter your user code when prompted ("Please enter security code"), then select a menu option (or press 0 for the full menu).
• Outside telephone: Dial the number connected to the control; after the programmed number of rings it answers with four beeps. Press *** and enter your code as above.
• Menu options: 0 = Help, 1 = Arm Status, 2 = Automation Control, 3 = Trouble Status, 4 = Zone Status, 7 = Audio Monitor, 9 = Exit/hang up.
• If no key presses are received within 15 seconds, the system announces "Hanging Up, Good-bye" and disconnects.

Fire Safety & Maintenance

• When the fire alarm activates, the siren/bell pulses and the display shows "Fire Alarm." Always evacuate immediately following your escape plan, even if fire isn't apparent.
• Silencing: Enter a valid user code. The display continues showing "Fire Alarm" until acknowledged with the code a second time.
• Resetting smoke detectors: Use Menu 2 (see above) — required after any fire alarm trip.
• Household fire safety audit: Check electrical outlets/appliances/cords for safe condition; store flammable liquids properly; keep lighters/matches away from children; service fireplaces and furnaces periodically.

Emergency Evacuation Plan

1. Evaluate possible escape routes; select 2 per room.
2. Second-floor rooms should have a rope ladder reaching the ground.
3. Draw and practice your escape plan; establish an outside meeting place.
4. Advise local fire authorities you have an installed fire alarm system.
5. When the alarm signals, leave immediately — don't stop for belongings.
6. If a fire occurs, test doors for heat before opening; crawl through smoke holding your breath; call the Fire Department from a neighbor's phone if needed.

Weekly System Testing

Caution: if monitored by a Central Monitoring Station, contact them before testing.

1. Secure all doors/windows, enter a user code to arm Away.
2. Trip the system by opening a protected window; confirm the siren/bell activates.
3. Disarm to silence and return to normal.

Battery test (with AC removed): Remove the AC transformer, confirm "AC Trouble" appears after the programmed delay, then repeat the arm/trip/disarm test — remember to reconnect AC afterward.

Manual battery load test (without tripping the alarm): ELK key + Master code → Menu 8 (System Settings) → 84 (System Tests) → Battery Test. Voltage should stay above 12.2V; replace the battery if a Low Battery trouble occurs.
