Application

The ELK-951 is an effective device for protecting communications equipment from damaging transients coming in over the telephone line. It's FCC listed as an RJ-31/38X disconnect block, making it ideal for use with digital communicators in both security and fire applications.

Installation Connections

• EGND (Earth Ground): connect to a good-quality earth ground with 14–16 gauge wire — a copper/galvanized rod (6' or longer) driven into the ground, or a metallic cold-water pipe. Do not use PVC pipe. If no better option exists, an electrical outlet cover screw can serve as a less effective alternative.
• TELCO LINE 1: RING connects to one side of the incoming telephone line pair (commonly red); TIP connects to the other side (commonly green).
• HOUSE PHONE 1: R1 connects to one side of the pair returning to the house phone(s) (commonly black); T1 connects to the other side (commonly yellow).
• J1 8-pin RJ modular jack: connect the equipment to be protected (digital communicator, telephone key set, etc.) using an 8-wire modular cord at least 3 ft. long for optimum protection. Pins 4 & 5 are RING/TIP going to the equipment; pins 1 & 8 are R1/T1 returning from the equipment; pins 2 & 7 are jumpered together to create a closed-circuit tamper loop supervising the modular plug (cut the jumper and add a resistor in series to convert to resistored EOL circuits).
