    Installation instructions for the ELK-9200 Heavy Duty Relay/Contactor — a 60-amp relay in a lockable metal enclosure for remotely controlling high-current loads like electric water heaters, pumps, and motors.

    Application

    The ELK-9200 is a heavy-duty relay/contactor inside a lockable metal enclosure, designed for remotely controlling high-current devices such as electric water heaters, pumps, motors, and gates. The energizing coil runs on 110 VAC, while the relay contacts are rated to switch 220 VAC at up to 60 amps. The relay coil is prewired with a 3-prong plug-in cord compatible with virtually any appliance-style automation module (purchased separately) — UPB, Insteon, Z-Wave, Zigbee, X10, etc. A simple remote command activates the low-current automation module, which in turn activates the 9200's high-current contacts, allowing safe on/off switching of up to 60A.

    Installation Steps (near the load)

    1. Turn off the appropriate electrical circuit at the breaker panel before beginning installation.
    2. Mount the 9200 near the load/device to be controlled. You'll also need a nearby 110 VAC outlet for the appliance-style automation module (purchased separately, must supply a 3rd ground prong).
    3. Disconnect the existing line-circuit cable at the device (water heater, pump, etc.) and re-route it into the bottom of the 9200 enclosure using an approved electrical wire clamp (not supplied).
    4. Connect the two hot wires from the line circuit to the terminals marked "LINE," and the neutral wire to "Neutral."
    5. Run a similarly rated cable from the device into the top of the enclosure (via an approved wire clamp). Connect the two hot wires to the "LOAD" terminals and neutral to "Neutral." Reconnect wires at the device.
    6. Connect the 3-prong cord to the automation appliance module and plug into a local 110 VAC outlet.
    7. Turn the circuit back on and test by sending remote commands to the automation module. The relay/contactor is noticeably loud when switching.

    Important Notes

    • GFCI (ground-fault) protected outlets are NOT recommended for the automation module — they may interfere with communications.
    • The ELK-9200 is not recommended for use in wet locations.
