    The ELK-C1M1 LTEA ElkCommBd Communicator is a dual-path alarm communications device for the ELK-M1G Control family, built for AT&T networks. It sends full data messages using Internet (IP) as the primary pathway and Cellular as backup, with encrypted communications to the Central Monitoring Station throughout.

    Overview

    The C1M1 replaces old fashioned phone-line communications with a modern dual-path solution. It can be configured for single-path operation if either IP or Cellular is unavailable, and in dual-path mode can be programmed to detect an outage on one pathway and report it over the other. Periodic automatic test reports are sent over both pathways for reliability.

    Cellular service is provided through a partnership with Telguard Online (a division of Telular Corporation). Central Station reporting parameters are managed via the ElkLink website. Installing dealers need accounts on both the Telguard Online and ElkLink websites.

    Hardware Overview

    • Cell (Service) Green LED — Solid ON = cell tower connection established. Off/blinking = no service.
    • LAN (Activity) Green LED — Blinking = active LAN network communications.
    • ElkLink (Connect) Orange/Yellow LED — Solid ON = connected/active with the ElkLink server portal (may go off for short periods without indicating a problem).
    • 7-Segment Display — Sequentially cycles through signal strength, error codes, and IP address, one character at a time.

    Installation Overview

    1. Establish a Telguard dealer account at www.telguardonline.com — do this at least 1 day before the job site visit.
    2. Establish an ElkLink dealer account by contacting Elk Products — also do this in advance.
    3. Test signal strength before permanent mounting. Power the unit temporarily near the proposed location and check the bars of cellular service on the 7-segment display. A minimum of 2 bars ("b 2") is required; smartphone signal bars are not a reliable indicator since they measure voice, not data, signal.
    4. Mount and wire to the M1 Control. The C1M1 mounts in the top right corner of the M1 enclosure using the supplied mounting screw and antenna knockout. Connect: (a) 12VDC power from an M1 Aux. power output, observing polarity; (b) the supplied 3-wire serial cable to M1 Serial Port #0; (c) a Cat5/5e LAN cable to the customer's router/switch.
    5. Register the C1M1 on Telguard using the serial number printed on the unit label, at www.telguardonline.com.
    6. Register (authenticate) the C1M1 on ElkLink using the Device MAC and Device PIN from the unit's sticker, at www.elklink.com. Requires Alarm Company Admin or Reg authority level.
    7. Program the M1 Communications settings — set up Telephone #1 for IP reporting (Format = "06 Ethernet", Priority = "Always Report") via Keypad Installer Level programming or ElkRP software.
    8. Test and verify alarm signal transmissions via Cellular, IP, or both by tripping several alarms and confirming the Central Station receives them.

    Wiring Connections

    • Make certain the M1 and C1M1 are both powered OFF before making connections.
    • Connect a two-conductor Red/Black power cable from the Positive and Negative input terminals on the C1M1 to a M1 Auxiliary Power output — observe polarity.
    • Plug the supplied 3-wire serial cable into the C1M1 and then into Main Serial Port #0 on the M1 Control.
    • Connect a Cat5/5e RJ45 LAN cable (not supplied) from the C1M1 to the customer's LAN switch or router.
    • Confirm the screw-on dipole antenna is secure, then power up. The unit obtains an IPv4 address via DHCP and displays it during the first few minutes.

    Caution: Do NOT apply power to the C1M1 until it has been activated on Telguard, registered in ElkLink, and connected serially to a working M1 Control panel — premature power application may cause the unit to be temporarily blocked by the cell carrier network. Also do not mount near where people regularly come within 20 cm (8 in) of the antenna, and always keep the antenna vertical (never horizontal).

    Network Port Requirements

    C1M1 initiates all network connections outbound, so no inbound port forwarding is required. Customers with strict outbound firewalls need to allow these outbound ports:
