    Application & Overview

    The ELK-6040 listens across the full audio band using Pattern Recognition Technology™ to detect breaking glass, distinguishing framed perimeter window breakage from, say, a drinking glass breaking within a room. The built-in two-way radio transmits alarm, supervisory, and low-battery messages, with acknowledgment from the control avoiding wasted retransmissions. A hand-clap "wake up" test confirms the sensor is operational; a handheld glass-break tester enables a dedicated functional test mode. Designed for residential indoor use in quiet, occupied perimeter zones — not for industrial applications.

    Mounting Guidelines

    • Must always be in direct line of sight of the window(s) being protected — cannot detect glass breaking around corners or in another room.
    • Wall mount: mount facing the glass being protected (or on an adjoining perpendicular wall).
    • Ceiling mount: mount with direct line of sight; positioning ~8 ft. into the room gives better detection.
    • Mount at least 3.3 ft (1m) from windows and 4 ft (1.2m) from noise sources (TVs, speakers, sinks, doors).
    • Max. range 20 ft (6m) for plate, tempered, laminated, or wired glass; max. distance from farthest glass point is 25 ft (7.6m).

    Locations to Avoid

    • Rooms smaller than 10x10 ft (3x3m)
    • Locations with lined/insulating drapes or closed wooden shutters
    • Corner mounting; humid rooms (moisture can cause false alarms)
    • Glass airlocks/vestibules, kitchens, bathrooms, garages, small utility rooms, stairwells, and small acoustically live rooms
    • Locations exposed to white noise (e.g. air compressors)

    Installation Steps

    1. Disconnect any notification appliances/service devices and functionally test the sensor at its intended location before permanent mounting.
    2. Remove the front screw and pry off the top cover with a flat-bladed tool.
    3. Drill mounting holes per the impression in the base; secure with anchors and screws.
    4. Snap the top cover back onto the base and replace the front screw.

    Enrolling the Sensor

    Via M1 Keypad

    1. Ensure the M1XRFTW Transceiver is powered and enrolled with the M1 Control.
    2. Enter Installer Programming → Menu 14: Wireless Setup → sub-menu 3: Learn Sel Wireless Transmtr.
    3. Select an unassigned WZone and press Learn.
    4. Insert the battery when prompted; the keypad chimes and displays the sensor's TXID upon success.
    5. Set the Loop ID to "2" (the 6040 MUST be Loop "2" — default is "0").
    6. Set Supervision Type to "1" for a 64-minute check-in.
    7. PIR Auto Restore — disregard (not applicable).
    8. Program the Zone Definition via Keypad Menu 5.

    Via ElkRP

    Create/expand a Wireless Zone Group, enter the sensor's TXID and Loop = 2, enable the zone, and set Supervision Type to "1". Save and repeat for each additional sensor.

    RF Acknowledge LED

    Visible only with the cover removed. Green blink = alarm transmission successfully acknowledged. Org/Red blink = transmission failed — verify the M1 Control and M1XRFTW are powered/enrolled, verify sensor enrollment, and consider relocating the transceiver or sensor, or adding a remote transceiver, if range is the issue.

    Battery Replacement

    Uses one CR123A lithium battery (~5-year life), supervised for low voltage. When the control indicates a low battery, remove the old battery, wait at least 20 seconds, then install a new one observing correct polarity. Trip the sensor a couple of times afterward to clear the low-battery trouble. Approved batteries: Panasonic CR123A, Duracell DL123A, Varta CR123A. Place the control panel into sensor test mode before replacing the battery to avoid a false alarm.

    Testing

    Test Method #1 — Wake Up Test: a loud hand clap causes two quick LED blinks, confirming power/circuitry — does not trigger an alarm or RF transmission.

    Test Method #2 — Functional Test: requires a UTC 5709C (or equivalent) handheld glass-break tester. Put the M1 into Walk Test mode, set the tester to tempered/laminated mode, hold it near the sensor and press "Single" — the sensor's LED should illuminate solid for 4 seconds and the keypad should beep/display the zone. This test mode restricts the sensor to mid-range frequencies only, matching what the tester reproduces.

    Maintenance & Troubleshooting

    • Annual: perform a Glass Break Functional Test.
    • Random: visually verify the Alarm LED flashes on a Wake Up Test.
    • Never use detergents, solvents, aerosols, or paint near/on the sensor — paint can seal the microphone opening.
    • Missing Transmitter: supervisory check-in not received — check that the sensor is still on-premises and its battery is installed.
    • Low battery / no power-up: check battery seating, polarity, and voltage (3.0 VDC nominal).

    Deleting a Sensor

    Change the Zone Definition to "0 - Unused," uncheck the Enable Transmitter option, and clear the TXID (set to all zeros) in the Wireless programming menu.

    Limitations

    Glass-break sensors cannot reliably detect breakage around corners or in other rooms. The radio only provides communications — it does not detect glass breaking. The 6040 is not a life-safety device.

    Limited Warranty

    Warranted free from defects and workmanship for 2 years from date of manufacture; batteries used with wireless devices are not warranted.
