    Installation manual for the ChannelPlus Model 5415 Frequency-Agile Digital Video Modulator — a single-channel modulator that converts baseband video/audio into a user-selected UHF or CATV channel for distribution to any TV on the coax network.

    Overview

    The ChannelPlus 5400 Series are digitally-tuned video modulators that convert any baseband video and audio signal to a user-selected UHF or Ultraband CATV channel. An internal quartz crystal reference oscillator and PLL circuitry ensure drift-free performance. The user selects the output channel using the "program" button; any TV connected via coax and tuned to that channel receives the signal.

    Connections & Controls

    • Power supply: 15VDC, 300mA (model 350-076)
    • RF output: to distribution coax
    • Audio inputs: Left and Right, combined internally for monaural output
    • Video input with termination jumper (remove jumper for hi-Z when feeding a local monitor)
    • "program" button to enter the desired channel number, and a power/status LED

    Programming the Channel

    Press the program button the number of times corresponding to each digit of the desired channel, waiting for the power LED between digits (ready-for-next-digit indicator). To enter a "0" digit, press the button 10 times.

    • Example — program to channel 67: press 6 times, wait for LED, press 7 more times.
    • Example — program to channel 120: press 1 time, wait, press 2 more times, wait, press 10 more times (for the "0").

    Channel Readback

    To read back the currently programmed channel: hold the program button while applying power. The LED blinks out each digit in sequence (a blink count of 10 is read back as "0"). Example: for channel 108, the LED blinks once, pauses, blinks 10 times (=0), pauses, blinks 8 times.

    Skip at least one channel number between any two programmed channels (e.g. 14 and 16 is OK; 14 and 15 is illegal). If an error occurs or an invalid channel is entered, the LED flashes quickly and the unit reverts to the previous setting.

    Changing Modulation Standard (HRC/IRC)

    Most cable services use IRC frequency assignments — the ChannelPlus 5400 series default. If the cable service uses HRC, or the TV appears to search for "house channels," reprogram the modulator to HRC by entering 98. Set back to IRC by entering 99. These entries are used only for HRC/IRC mode, not channel assignment.

    Sample System Diagram

    A typical installation adds a modulated channel (e.g. Channel 70 for a satellite receiver) to an existing CATV/antenna distribution system feeding all TVs. The satellite receiver's video/audio output feeds the modulator; RF output combines with the CATV feed via a coax panel (e.g. the ChannelPlus Model 3308 Coax panel, distributing to up to 8 TVs). To also feed a local monitor, use RCA "Y" adaptors and remove the "LOOP" jumper.

    Troubleshooting

    Symptom Cause / Fix
    No picture Verify video source is producing a signal, and that TV and modulator are tuned to the same channel type (UHF vs. CATV numbering differs — e.g. UHF 16 ≠ CATV 16).
    Weak UHF channel If the TV has a separate UHF input, be sure it's connected.
    Herringbone interference on the ChannelPlus channel (diagonal lines) The chosen channel may not be fully vacant (distant UHF stations, cable company noise). Try a different channel number or add a low-pass filter.
    Herringbone on many channels (disappears when modulator removed) Modulator output is overdriving RF amplifiers. Add an attenuator to reduce RF output (ChannelPlus coax panels are designed for full output).
    Low audio volume Left and Right audio inputs are combined for monaural — both must be connected. For a mono source, feed both inputs via an RCA "Y" connector.
    No color on ChannelPlus channels Incorrect cable standard chosen — not all TVs handle the 1.25MHz difference between H and I cable standards; see HRC/IRC programming above.
