Installation and programming manual for the ChannelPlus 5400 Series frequency-agile multi-channel video modulators (Models 5425, 5435, 5445).
Installation and programming manual for the ChannelPlus 5400 Series frequency-agile multi-channel video modulators — Models 5425 (2-channel), 5435 (3-channel), and 5445 (4-channel).
The ChannelPlus 5400 Series are digitally-tuned video modulators that convert any baseband video and audio signal to a user-selected UHF or Ultraband CATV channel. An internal quartz crystal reference oscillator and PLL circuitry ensure drift-free performance. Any TV connected to the output via coax can receive the signals when tuned to the proper channel.
Skip at least one number between channels — e.g. channels 14 and 16 are OK, but 14 and 15 is illegal. If two adjacent channels are selected, the unit accepts the entry but blinks the LEDs of the channels that are too close; re-program one of them to move it away.
A readback mode displays the current channel assignment for any modulator: select the modulator, then hold the program button down for 5 seconds and release. The LED blinks out the channel digits — e.g. a channel programmed to 108 blinks 1 time (pause), 10 times ("10" is read back as 0), pause, 8 times.
Most cable services use IRC frequency assignments — this is the default. If the cable service uses HRC, or the TV appears to search for "house channels," reprogram the modulator to HRC by entering "98" on any channel; set back to IRC by entering "99". This setting affects all channel assignments for that unit — cable channels must be all IRC or all HRC, not mixed.
If an error occurs or an incorrect channel is entered, the LED flashes quickly for a second and returns to the previous setting.
| Symptom | Cause / Fix |
|---|---|
| No picture | Verify the video source is on and producing signal. Confirm TV and modulator are tuned to the same channel type — e.g. UHF 16 and CATV 16 are different frequencies. |
| Weak ChannelPlus UHF channel | If the TV has a separate UHF input, be sure it's connected. |
| LEDs blink during programming | You need one unused channel space between channels — the display blinks on an "illegal" choice. |
| Herringbone interference (diagonal lines) on one channel | The chosen channel number may not be completely vacant (distant UHF stations, cable company extra signals). Try another channel number, or add a low-pass filter to remove cable company noise. |
| Herringbone interference on many channels (disappears when modulator removed) | High modulator output overdriving RF amplifiers. Reduce RF output with an attenuator (ChannelPlus coax panels are designed for full output). |
| Audio volume is low | Left and right audio inputs are combined for monaural — both must be used for proper level. For a mono source, connect it to both inputs with an RCA "Y" connector. |
| No color on ChannelPlus channels | Incorrect cable standard chosen — not all TVs accommodate the 1.25MHz difference between H and I cable standards. See HRC/IRC programming above. |
