    Installation guide for the Buffalo Electronics IR-250 & IR-350 High Performance Infrared Repeaters — thin J-box mount (IR-250) and easy-connect 1/2" tube mount (IR-350) IR repeaters for whole-home remote control distribution.

    Overview

    IR repeaters need to be easily accessible and convenient for the homeowner to use. Best placed near the TV/monitor, in a location where the remote control signal travels 30 feet or less.

    • IR-250: Designed to mount in-wall using any standard electrical box or P-ring. The slim-mount design leaves extra wiring space, useful when mounting multiple devices in one box. For best appearance, mount at the same height as in-wall lighting switches.
    • IR-350: Designed to mount in a 1/2" diameter hole — in a cabinet, wall, ceiling, speaker, or directly in an equipment rack. Comes with two lens options to blend with the mounting location.

    Wiring Recommendations

    • IR remote control signals are similar to digital communications signals — a low-capacitance communications cable (<20 pF/ft) is a good choice.
    • Unshielded cable works in all but the noisiest environments; shielded cable is rarely required.
    • Standard CAT5 network cable is an excellent choice — use one twisted pair for each of the three connections (V+, GND, SIG).
    • This method allows repeater runs up to 1,000 feet; single-wire connections allow runs in excess of 500 feet.
    • Never install low-voltage devices like IR repeaters inside electrical boxes with 115VAC wiring. Run IR control wiring at least 1 foot away from 115VAC lines, telephone lines, and speaker wires to reduce noise interference.
    • Multiple IR repeaters can be wired home-run (generally preferred — more reliable, easier to troubleshoot/upgrade) or daisy-chained.
    • For long runs and large systems, use Buffalo's premium 1.2A switching power supply, model SPS-1212.
