User guide for the Aeotec Z-Stick 7 (ZWA010) — a USB Z-Wave Plus controller/dongle used to build and manage a Z-Wave network from a PC, Mac, or Raspberry Pi.

Overview

The Z-Stick 7 plugs into any USB host controller and acts as a primary Z-Wave controller for third-party Z-Wave software. It is used to include (pair) Z-Wave devices into a network and manage them through whatever control software the installer chooses.

Quick Start

1. Plug the Z-Stick 7 into a host controller (PC, Mac, Raspberry Pi, etc). The host operating system typically auto-installs the required USB driver (CP2102N chipset from Silicon Labs); if not, it can be downloaded manually from silabs.com.
2. Determine the virtual serial port the Z-Stick 7 is connected to:
   • Windows: Device Manager → Ports (COM & LPT). Usually shows as a COMx device.
   • Linux: Run dmesg | grep tty at a terminal — usually appears as /dev/ttyUSB0.
   • macOS: Apple menu → System Preferences → Network. Appears as a USB Modem device (/dev/cu.usbmodem).
3. Open your chosen third-party Z-Wave software and select the COM/virtual port the Z-Stick 7 is associated with.

Adding (Including) a Z-Wave Device

1. Set the third-party software into its "add device" mode.
2. Press the Action Button on the Aeotec Z-Wave device you want to add. If it's a non-Aeotec device, refer to that device's manual for its inclusion procedure.
3. The device's name appears in the software's interface once successfully added.
4. Repeat for any further devices.

How the Z-Stick 7 ultimately controls paired Z-Wave devices depends entirely on the control scheme of the third-party Z-Wave software chosen.
