    System Overview

    ABB-Welcome IP devices integrate into existing LAN network cabling and form their own logical network within it — no separate/dedicated cabling is required beyond standard Ethernet. Key characteristics:

    • No new cabling needed if sufficient LAN cable already exists in the building.
    • New devices can be added at any time without additional wiring.
    • All devices communicate via Ethernet and can be powered via PoE switches (a separate power supply is not required, though local 230V power is available as an option).
    • Expandable within EN 50173-1 (2003) and ISO/IEC 11801 (2002) network standards — suitable for single/multi-family homes, offices, and high-rise buildings.
    • Multi-channel technology: any apartment can be called from multiple outdoor stations, and multiple apartments can be reached simultaneously from different stations.
    • Integrates with ABB-free@home® home automation and KNX systems via IP gateways.

    Power Budgeting (PoE Selection)

    All ABB-Welcome IP devices comply with IEEE 802.3af, which caps each PoE load at a maximum draw of 12.95W, with a minimum required bandwidth of 100 Mbps. When sizing a PoE switch:

    • Total the wattage draw of every connected device (see table below).
    • Add at least a 20% power buffer — do not load the switch to its rated limit.
    • Verify the switch's total rated output exceeds your calculated requirement plus buffer.

    Device Categories

    Outdoor Stations

    Installed at building entrances, perimeter areas, floor landings, apartment doors, or basement garages. All outdoor stations include video (720P, 130° camera angle, anti-mist lens, automatic day/night switchover) and are rated IP54 / IK07 (vandal-resistant). Three tiers are available:

    • IP touch 5" outdoor station — capacitive touchscreen, virtual keypad, integrated MIFARE® DESFire® RFID reader, supports lift control and news/advertising display.
    • IP keypad outdoor station — physical keypad, door opening via encrypted IC/ID card.
    • IP pushbutton outdoor station — freely programmable buttons (lighting, indoor station call, protection unit call), door opening via encrypted card.

    Indoor Stations

    • IP touch 7" (models H82364/H82365/H82366) — touchscreen indoor station; central operating field for door entry, CCTV, access control, and home automation (KNX & free@home); video doorbell display; call lists; SOS/emergency call receipt; some models add fire alarm triggering and dual LAN ports.
    • Guard unit (H8303) — concierge-style station with the same feature set as the IP touch 7", plus the ability to transfer calls to an IP touch 7" or grant access authorization directly; supports desktop mounting.

    System Devices

    • Smart Access Point (system controller) — hosts the management software. Lite and Pro versions each control up to 700 apartments; Pro adds Busch-AccessControl support. A PC-based version of the management software (available on request/USB) scales to 700-2000 apartments for larger installations.
    • IP actuator (H8304) — executes switching commands (door openers, light switches) as configured in the management software; supports up to 2 connection blockages and adjustable lock-release/lighting activation duration.

    Commissioning Overview

    The commissioning workflow covers: preparing and addressing devices manually (physical rotary-switch addressing for IP touch 7"/Guard unit, outdoor stations with/without display, and IP actuators), or addressing via the ABB-Welcome App. After addressing, devices are added to the system either via project import from the app, manual entry, or automatic network search, then linked together in the management software.

    IT Security Guidance

    Because ABB-Welcome IP integrates doors, cameras, and access control onto a network, ABB emphasizes these safety practices for installers and end users:

    • Physical security: firmly install devices and conceal cable ends to prevent tampering; use anti-theft screws/hardware, especially outdoors.
    • Device passwords: always set a password where supported.
    • Network isolation: use a separate LAN/WLAN network (with its own router/switches) dedicated to building automation.
    • Network hardening: use anti-virus software, a firewall, WPA2 (or higher) wireless encryption, strong passwords, and MAC filtering.
    • Strong password rules: minimum 8 characters, including at least 2 special characters, a number, a lowercase letter, and an uppercase letter. Consider a password manager plus multi-factor authentication.
    • Remote access: do NOT use raw port-forwarding/IP tunneling (unencrypted) or open router ports toward the Internet — this exposes KNX communication. Instead use a VPN tunnel, or ABB's MyBuildings Living Space Portal (my.abb-livingspace.com), which brokers remote access via smartphone/tablet through the cloud without requiring a DynDNS account.
