    Full text manual (for reference)

Instruction manual for the A&D Medical UA-1030T / UA-1030TCN Premier Talking Blood Pressure Monitor — a clinically validated, oscillometric home blood pressure and pulse monitor with a talking display and TriCheck™ averaging mode.

    Overview

This blood pressure monitor was clinically validated by an independent organization; measurements are equivalent to those obtained by a trained observer using the cuff/stethoscope auscultation method within the limits prescribed by ANSI/AAMI SP10 for electronic sphygmomanometers.

The UA-1030T is designed for home use by those 18 years and older to monitor blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) and pulse rate. It is not designed for ambulatory use. The device is based on the oscillometric method — a noninvasive blood pressure determination that examines the pulsatile pressure generated by the arterial wall as it expands and contracts against the cuff with each heartbeat. The cuff is inflated until the artery is fully blocked; measurements are taken during both inflation and deflation for a faster, more comfortable reading.

    Important Safety Information

    • Only a medical practitioner is qualified to interpret your blood pressure measurements. Use of this device should not replace regular medical examinations. Consult your physician if you have any doubt about your readings.
    • Do not attempt to service, calibrate, or repair this monitor. If a mechanical problem occurs, contact A&D Medical in the U.S.A. at 1-888-726-9966, or Auto Control in Canada at 1-800-461-0991.
    • Avoid exposing the monitor to extremes in temperature or humidity, or to direct sunlight, shock, and dust. Accuracy is guaranteed only when stored and used within the specified temperature/humidity ranges (see Specifications).
    • Clean the monitor and cuff with a dry, soft cloth or a cloth dampened with water and mild detergent. Never use alcohol, benzene, thinner, or other harsh chemicals.
    • Remove and replace batteries if the monitor is not used for more than six months. Alkaline batteries are recommended; rechargeable batteries are not recommended.
    • Use the appropriate AC adapter and converter(s) when outside the U.S.A.

    Before You Start

Install 4 type AA (1.5V) batteries (alkaline recommended), or use the AC Adapter, and attach the cuff to the monitor before use.

    1. Remove the battery compartment cover by gently pushing down on the arrow and sliding the cover forward.
    2. Put in the bottom row of batteries first, then the top row, matching positive (+) and negative (–) terminals as indicated. Be sure batteries make contact with compartment terminals.
    3. Replace the cover by sliding it into the compartment and gently pressing into place.

    Selecting the Correct Cuff Size

Using the correct cuff size is important for an accurate reading. A cuff that is too large will produce a reading lower than the correct blood pressure; a cuff that is too small will produce a reading higher than the correct blood pressure. With your arm hanging at your side, measure the circumference of your upper arm at the midpoint between the shoulder and elbow. The SlimFit™ cuff accommodates a wide range of arm sizes, from 9–14.6 in. (23–37 cm). If your arm circumference is outside that range, contact A&D Medical (1-888-726-9966) or Auto Control in Canada (1-800-461-0991) for alternate cuff sizes.

    Adjusting the Clock

    1. Press the clock button located to the right of the display.
    2. Use the arrow buttons to set the year.
    3. After reaching the desired year, press the clock button again, then repeat the process for month, day, and hour.
    4. The next setting is pressure.

    Adjusting the Pressure

After setting the date/time, the next mode is pressure setting. Default is AUTO (automatic). For more rapid readings, you can adjust the default to about 30 mmHg or more above your expected systolic pressure using the arrow buttons, then press the clock button to confirm. The next setting is TriCheck™ Mode.

    TriCheck™ Mode

An optional feature that automatically takes three consecutive readings one minute apart and provides the average, complying with the American Heart Association's recommended measuring method. Default is off; use the arrow buttons to turn on/off, then press the clock button to confirm and end the settings session. To adjust any values, push the clock button and begin again.

    Taking Your Blood Pressure

    Tips

    • Relax for several moments before measurement.
    • Do not smoke or ingest caffeine at least 30 minutes prior to measurement.
    • Remove constricting clothing and place the cuff on a bare arm.
    • Unless your physician recommends otherwise, use the left arm.
    • Do not talk during measurement; do not cross your legs and keep feet flat on the floor.

    Steps

    1. Sit comfortably with your left arm resting on a flat surface so the center of your upper arm is at the same height as your heart.
    2. Lay your left arm on the table, palm up, and wrap the cuff around the upper arm, about 0.5 in. (1–2 cm) above the inside of the elbow. Place the cuff directly against the skin — clothing may cause a faint pulse and a measurement error.
    3. Make sure the cuff is aligned at heart level.
    4. Press the START button. All display segments appear, then zero (0) blinks briefly as the cuff starts to inflate. It is normal for the cuff to feel very tight. Press START again at any time to stop inflation.
    5. When inflation is complete, deflation starts automatically. Once the pulse is detected, the pulse mark blinks with each beat. If an appropriate pressure is not obtained, the device re-inflates automatically (see Measurement with Set Pressure below to avoid this).
    6. When the measurement is complete, systolic and diastolic pressure and pulse rate are displayed and announced aloud; the cuff exhausts remaining air and deflates completely.
    7. Press START to turn the device off (it also auto-shuts-off after one minute of non-operation).
    8. The reading is stored in memory. Remove the cuff and record blood pressure, pulse rate, date, and time on the logbook chart in the back of the manual (additional logbook charts available free at www.andmedical.com or www.autocontrol.com in Canada).

    Measurement Using TriCheck

    1. Press START. All display segments appear, zero blinks briefly, and the first measurement starts.
    2. When complete, systolic/diastolic/pulse are displayed, then a one-minute countdown starts before the second measurement.
    3. After one minute, the second measurement starts; when complete, the average of the first and second measurements displays, then a one-minute countdown starts before the third measurement.
    4. After one minute, the third measurement starts; when complete, the average of all three measurements displays and is stored in memory.

The TriCheck symbol displays during the measurement sequence. To cancel, press START (no data is stored). If the cuff fit error symbol appears during the first measurement, cancel, reapply the cuff correctly, and start a new measurement. No data is stored if canceled or before completion of the third measurement.

    Measurement with Set Pressure

The UA-1030T detects the pulse and inflates the cuff to a systolic pressure level automatically. If re-inflation occurs repeatedly, set a fixed pressure value to avoid it:

    1. At the clock-adjustment pressure step, press the SET button to enter pressure setting mode (current setting blinks).
    2. Select a pressure value about 30 mmHg or more above your expected systolic pressure: AUTO (default), 180, 210, or 240 mmHg (fixed).
    3. Press SET to go to TriCheck setting mode, then press START to turn the device off. The next measurement uses the new pressure value.

    Measurement with Desired Systolic Pressure

Use this method when re-inflation occurs repeatedly even at 240 mmHg, or when results aren't displayed even as pressure decreases to 20 mmHg or less.

    1. Place the cuff on the arm (preferably the left).
    2. Press and hold START until a number about 30–40 mmHg higher than your expected systolic pressure appears.
    3. Release START at the desired systolic pressure to begin measurement.

    What Is an Irregular Heartbeat?

The monitor provides a blood pressure and pulse reading even when an irregular heartbeat occurs. The Irregular Heartbeat symbol appears if a heartbeat varies by 25% from the average of all heartbeat intervals during measurement. Relax, remain still, and refrain from talking during measurement. Contact your physician if you see this symbol frequently.

    About the Pressure Rating Indicator™

Provides a snapshot of your blood pressure classification based on your measurement, per the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee (JNC7) on Prevention, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, May 2003). Because other risk factors (diabetes, obesity, smoking, etc.) affect blood pressure, the indicator is approximate — consult your physician for interpretation. Residents outside the U.S. (Canada, Mexico) should refer to the WHO Classification Table instead.

    About Memory

The device stores the last 90 measurements and announces the data values as they are displayed.

    1. Press the memory button. The average of all measurements and number of data points display (shows "0" if no data). Press START to turn off.
    2. Each additional press displays: average of all AM (morning, 4:00–9:59) measurements, average of all PM (evening, 18:00–1:59) measurements, most recent data, then progressively older data back to the oldest (No. 1).
    3. After the last data point, press the button again to return to the average display.
    4. Press START to turn off (auto-off after one minute of non-operation).

    Adjusting the Speaker Volume

    1. Press the VOLUME button to enter volume adjustment mode. Six volume stages plus OFF are available.
    2. Press the up/down buttons to increase or decrease volume.
    3. Press START to turn off (auto-off after three minutes of non-operation).

    Selecting the Language

    1. In volume adjustment mode, press VOLUME again to enter language selection.
    2. Choose L1 English (default), L2 French, or L3 Spanish using the up/down buttons.
    3. Press START to turn off (auto-off after three minutes of non-operation).

Using the Monitor with AC Adapter

An AC adapter jack allows power from a home outlet. Use only the exclusive TB-233 AC adapter to avoid potential damage; contact A&D Medical (1-888-726-9966) or AutoControl in Canada (1-800-461-0991) to purchase one.

    • Connecting: Insert the AC adapter plug into a 120V AC outlet, then connect the plug into the jack on the back of the monitor.
    • Disconnecting: Turn the unit off (START button), disconnect the plug from the monitor's jack quickly, then remove the adapter from the outlet.

Note: If the monitor has batteries and an AC adapter connected, measurements stored in memory may be lost if the AC adapter is unplugged from the wall first. Ensure the unit is off and the monitor-side plug is removed quickly before unplugging from the wall.

    About Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against artery walls. Systolic pressure occurs when the heart contracts; diastolic pressure occurs when the heart expands. It is affected by age, weight, time of day, activity level, climate, altitude, season, caffeine/alcohol, medications, emotional stress, and tight clothing. It varies day to day and even rises during work/play, falling to its lowest during sleep.
