Safety Warnings

• For ear canal use only — NOT intended for rectal, oral, or underarm temperature measurement.

How the Ear Thermometer Works

The UT-302 uses infrared thermo-scanning to measure eardrum temperature. Because the eardrum shares blood vessels with the hypothalamus (the brain's temperature-control center), ear temperature is a reliable indicator of core body temperature. The unit scans the eardrum 512 times per second and displays the highest temperature detected — faster, safer, and easier than a traditional stick thermometer, and usable even on a sleeping child.

Before You Start

• Intended for household use only; consult a physician with questions about a specific reading.
• Use at room temperature between 60.8°F–95°F (16°C–35°C). Allow the thermometer to acclimate to this range before use if it has been stored outside it.
• Do not measure temperature if: the ear is cold, wet, or blocked with wax; it's within 30 minutes of eating, bathing, or exercise; or you have an ear infection.
• Keep the lens clean — a dirty lens causes inaccurate readings. Clean with a soft, alcohol-moistened cloth or cotton swab; never use an abrasive cleaner.
• Practice on yourself and healthy family members first so you're comfortable with the readings when someone is actually ill.

Taking Your Temperature

1. Press the fronthead cover's sides to remove it.
2. Press the Power/Scan button for one second — the unit runs a self-test, briefly lighting all display symbols.
3. After the self-test, the last reading taken is shown; the unit is ready for a new measurement.
4. Press Power/Scan again — the scanning symbol appears beneath the last reading.
5. Insert the probe well into the ear canal so the tip can continuously scan.
6. After one second, a beep sounds indicating the reading is complete — remove the thermometer to view the result.
7. A smiling face (☺) appears for readings below 38°C (100.4°F); a sad face (☹) with one long and two short beeps appears at 38°C (100.4°F) or above.
8. “Lo” or “Hi” appears if the reading is out of the measurement range; “Err” appears if the operating temperature is outside 16°C–35°C (60.8°F–95°F).
9. Press the “M” button on the underside of the unit to recall the 10 most recent readings.
10. The unit automatically powers off after one minute of non-use to conserve battery.

Switching °C / °F

Press the Power/Scan button once, then press and hold it while pressing the “M” button to toggle between Celsius and Fahrenheit modes.

Care and Cleaning

• Probe lens: clean after each use with a soft, alcohol-moistened cotton swab. Never wash the lens with water.
• Thermometer body: wipe with a soft, dry cloth only — no water, cleaning solutions, or abrasive cleaners, and never submerge in liquid.

Replacing the Battery

1. The low-battery symbol appears on the display when the battery needs replacing; the unit still works normally at this point. Once “Lo” also appears alongside the battery symbol, replace the battery before continued use.
2. Remove the screw from the battery compartment lid with a small Phillips screwdriver, then remove the lid.
3. Using a non-metal pointed tool, carefully dislodge and remove the old battery.
4. Insert a new 3V CR-2032 lithium battery, positive (+) side up.
5. Replace the lid and secure the screw. Note: battery removal clears any readings stored in memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I get consistently low temperature readings?
A: The thermometer isn't seated properly — the tip must form a seal around the ear opening. Or the lens is dirty; clean with an alcohol-moistened cotton swab.

Q: Why do left-ear and right-ear readings differ?
A: Core temperature is roughly the same in both ears, but shape, cleanliness, and thermometer position can cause small differences between readings.

Q: Can I use this on an animal?
A: No — the UT-302 is programmed specifically for human ear anatomy and body temperature.
