Complete instruction guide for the LifeSource® Deluxe One Touch Digital Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor, Model UB-521 (A&D Medical).

Important Information

• Only a medical practitioner is qualified to interpret your blood pressure measurements — this device should not replace regular medical examinations.
• Have your physician review your procedure for using this device before he/she prescribes or adjusts medications based on your readings.
• Consult your physician if you have any doubt about your readings; contact A&D Medical if a mechanical problem occurs.
• Use the correct cuff size and follow instructions carefully to ensure accurate results.
• Do not attempt to service, calibrate, or repair this monitor.
• Avoid exposing the monitor to temperature/humidity extremes, direct sunlight, shock, or dust. Accuracy is only guaranteed within the temperature/humidity ranges listed in Specifications.
• Clean with a dry, soft cloth or one dampened with water and mild detergent — never alcohol, benzene, thinner, or other harsh chemicals.
• Remove and replace batteries if the monitor is unused for more than six months (alkaline batteries recommended).

The UB-521 is intended for home use by adults 18+ to monitor blood pressure (systolic/diastolic) and pulse rate. It provides accurate readings on wrists with a circumference between 5.3" and 8.5" (13.5–21.5 cm).

Before You Start

The unit requires 2 "AAA" (1.5V) alkaline batteries (included) — rechargeable batteries will not work.

1. Slide off the battery cover.
2. Insert batteries matching the +/− terminals shown in the compartment.
3. Slide the battery cover back on.

Taking Your Blood Pressure

Tips

• Relax for about 5 minutes before measuring.
• Avoid smoking or caffeine for at least 30 minutes prior.
• Remove constricting clothing and place the cuff on your bare wrist.
• Use your left arm unless your physician recommends otherwise.
• Don't talk during measurement; keep feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed.

Steps

1. Sit comfortably near a flat surface.
2. With palm facing upward, attach the monitor to the inside of your left wrist and fasten securely, aligning the cuff's top edge with your wrist crease.
3. Position your wrist level with your heart (use an arm rest if needed) — this is critical for accuracy.
4. Press START. Your average reading and the number of stored measurements will display (e.g., "A25" = 25 measurements in memory), then the cuff will pressurize and the Cuff Inflation Meter will appear. It's normal for the cuff to feel very tight. (Press START again anytime to stop inflation.)
5. Remain still and don't talk while the pulse symbol flashes with each heartbeat.
6. When complete, systolic, diastolic, and pulse readings display, and the cuff automatically deflates.
7. Press START once to power off, or let it auto power-down one minute after the reading.

Wait 5–10 minutes between measurements to let blood flow return to normal. Poor circulation (especially cold hands/wrists in winter) may prevent a reading.

Display Symbols

Irregular Heartbeat

The UB-521 still provides a blood pressure and pulse reading even if an irregular heartbeat occurs (defined as a heartbeat varying by 25% from the average of all heartbeat intervals during measurement). The Irregular Heartbeat symbol will display when this happens. Relax, remain still, and don't talk during measurement; contact your physician if you see this symbol frequently.

Cuff Inflation Meter & Average Reading

The Cuff Inflation Meter (left side of the display) moves up during inflation, starting at 20mmHg. The UB-521 also displays an average blood pressure reading based on all measurements stored in memory, along with the number of measurements, both when taking a new reading and when recalling stored measurements.

Pressure Rating Indicator™

Provides a quick visual snapshot of your blood pressure classification per the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee (JNC7) on Prevention, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, May 2003). This is approximate — other risk factors (diabetes, obesity, smoking, etc.) affect interpretation, so consult your physician. Residents outside the U.S. (Canada, Mexico) should reference the WHO Classification Table below.

Memory

Stores up to 90 blood pressure and pulse measurements, indexed from newest to oldest (oldest = "n01"). To retrieve: with the display blank, press and hold START — the average reading displays first, then the memory index number (e.g. "n04") of the most recent reading followed by its measurement; release START when you see the index number. The display shuts off automatically a few seconds after all readings display. If no measurements are stored, you'll see "00" and a blinking "A00". To clear all memory, remove and reinsert the battery. Note: memory is lost if batteries go low or are removed.

About Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against artery walls — systolic occurs when the heart contracts, diastolic when it expands, measured in mmHg. It's affected by age, weight, time of day, activity, climate, altitude, season, caffeine/alcohol, medications, stress, and even tight clothing. Blood pressure normally rises during activity and falls to its lowest during sleep.

Why Measure at Home?

Readings in a doctor's office or hospital can be elevated by anxiety ("white coat hypertension"). Home self-measurement supplements your doctor's readings and provides a more complete blood pressure history; studies show detection and treatment of hypertension improves when patients both consult their physician and monitor at home. Different cuff sizes used by different providers can also cause reading differences — a too-large cuff reads low, a too-small cuff reads high.

Keys to Successful Monitoring

• Measure at the same time every day, in the same chair/position
• Keep feet flat, legs uncrossed; relax 5 minutes before measuring
• Use the correct cuff size
• Stay still and quiet during measurement; record results in a logbook
• Establish a two-week consistent "baseline measurement" before evaluating changes from lifestyle or medication
