Quick installation guide and technical reference for the Zipabox KNX Module (ZBMKNXV1), which integrates a KNX/EIB bus network into a Zipato Zipabox smart home controller.

    Overview

The Zipabox KNX Module serves as a simple integration solution for KNX devices, supporting the BAOS ("Bus Access and ObjectServer") protocol for accessing data points. This allows KNX devices to be fully integrated into a Zipato network via the standard KNX bus. It contains a KNX transceiver plus a microcontroller with a certified KNX stack, and electrically isolates the module from the bus. Communication with the module uses the FT1.2 serial protocol; the module supports up to 250 group objects and 250 parameters. This module is designed to work only with Zipabox.

    Installation

    1. Disconnect Zipabox from power.
    2. Align the connector of the KNX expansion module to expansion Slot 2 of the Zipabox (or to a module already connected into Slot 2).
    3. Join the module and Zipabox together until the gap between them is completely closed.
    4. Connect to the KNX network via the standard KNX bus connector (polarity-protected).

    KNX Setup via ETS

ETS (Engineering Tool Software) is the manufacturer-independent configuration tool required to set up the Zipato KNX module; it runs on Windows (v4 works well with the BAOS module) and requires a license — the demo license allows only 3 devices per project, while the Lite license (via Zipato's eCampus3 training) allows up to 20 devices.

    1. Import the product database from weinzierl.de and add the KNX BAOS module 820/870 to your ETS project.
    2. Select the BAOS module in the topology list to view associated objects.
    3. Under the Parameters tab, choose a Type for each datapoint and add a description for later maintenance.
    4. Select the group address to associate with the Zipato network and add the appropriate BAOS datapoint.
    5. Export the project to a file for the Zipato KNX Importer Tool, which extracts group addresses and names.
    6. Copy the extracted data, then log into my.zipato.com, open the "Add Device" wizard, select KNX Device, and paste the data.
    7. Create Zipato endpoints matching the appropriate BAOS endpoints, then save — the new endpoints communicate with the associated KNX group addresses.

    Data Point Types Supported

Up to 250 group objects/parameters, with selectable data point types including: DPT 01 Binary (1 bit), DPT 02 Binary controlled (2 bits), DPT 03 Dim up/down (4 bits), DPT 04 Character (1 byte), DPT 05 Scaling (1 byte), DPT 06 Signed value (1 byte), DPT 07 Unsigned value (2 bytes), DPT 08 Signed value (2 bytes), DPT 09 Float value (2 bytes), DPT 10 Time (3 bytes), DPT 11 Date (3 bytes), DPT 12 Unsigned value (4 bytes), DPT 13 Signed value (4 bytes), DPT 14 Float value (4 bytes), DPT 15 Access data (4 bytes), DPT 16 Character string (14 bytes), DPT 17 Scene (1 byte), DPT 18 Scene controlled (1 byte), plus various byte-length "Unknown" types for custom use.
