  • ZANE ZIAC4x — Four-Wire Low-Voltage AC Dimmer Data Sheet

    September 08, 2026 3 min read

Data sheet for the ZANE Four-Wire, Low-Voltage AC Dimmer (ZIAC4x series) for 12V/24V AC lighting circuits.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Data sheet for the ZANE Four-Wire, Low-Voltage AC Dimmer (ZIAC4x series) — a compact, four-connection dimmer for 12V or 24V AC low-voltage lighting circuits, compatible with halogen, AC-rated LED, and AC/DC-rated LED loads.

    Overview

The ZANE AC Dimmer installs on the low-voltage side of a magnetic step-down transformer for easy system design and fast installation. It uses an innovative "pi" trigger circuit for flicker-free, wide-band dimming — from a warm glow through high-intensity halogen or LED brightness. Triac-based power circuitry with dual low-firing-point diacs minimizes waste heat and maximizes efficiency and brightness.

With only four connections and tagged leads, first-time installation typically takes about 10 minutes. There is never a grounding or bypass wire to connect, and no special components to match. A quality machined aluminum knob provides crisp, smooth rotary action, with a tactile off position that eliminates power drain when inactive. An accelerating response curve gives better control over the important low-brightness range.

A heavy RF noise filter (about 10x the suppression of an ordinary filter) minimizes interference with nearby radios and other electronics. An included potentiometer lets you optimize minimum brightness "on the fly" to compensate for low or high AC source voltage, create special effects, or reset after adding lamps. Soft start/end extends the life of incandescent bulbs.

    Applications

    • Yard: pool, patio, spa, pathway, pond, fountain, security lighting — bugs aren't attracted at low incandescent settings
    • Architectural and Landscape: spot, wash, flood lighting, "Moon Garden" effects; incandescent bulbs last far longer
    • Interior: presentation lighting, night lighting, stage lighting
    • Mobile: variable lighting for RV and marine interior/exterior

Application note: For incandescent-only applications, any combination of ZANE Dimmers and switched circuits can be installed on a given transformer (e.g. switched overhead + dimmed under-counter on the same transformer). For mixed incandescent/LED (or LED-only) applications, only one ZANE Dimmer should be installed per transformer to avoid possible LED flicker — from there, any combination of dimmed or switched incandescent/LED can be added.

    Wiring

Four wires: two from the AC transformer's low-voltage secondary (red/black), and two to the incandescent/LED load (blue/black). No grounding wire is required.

    Technical Specifications

    Spec Value
Mode of operation Triac-based, pi-configured trigger circuit, dual low-firing-point diacs, heavy RF filter
Supply voltage 12 or 24 VAC (nominal)
Fuse/breaker Fuse/breaker for rated capacity (10A or 20A); usable up to that point
Maximum load Normally 70–80% of rated current, usable up to fuse/breaker limit
    Minimum load None
Line regulation Directly proportional to AC line voltage
Load regulation Generally <3% from minimum to maximum load
AC-AC conversion efficiency ~85% at full rated load
Transient protection Pi trigger circuit acts as a spike filter against transient voltages
Load types Resistive loads (incandescent, halogen, heating elements) and/or AC- or AC/DC-rated LED. Not suitable for electronic appliances, fluorescent lighting, or DC-rated LED — damage may result.
Service life of on/off switch ~50,000 cycles
    Dimmer size ~1.9" (49mm) L x 1.3" (33mm) W x 1.7" (43mm) H, excluding knob
Weight incl. plate ~7 oz (195g) for 10A version; ~8 oz (224g) for 20A version
Ambient temperature range -40°F (-40°C) to 115°F (46°C), with restrictions noted
Dimming range ~10% min (factory setting) through ~90% max; can be manually set to ~5% min
Heat dissipation The metallic wall plate serves as an external heat dissipater; temperature rise typically under 40°F (22°C) above ambient — could feel hot to the touch under unusual conditions

    Installation Procedure

Installs directly into a standard outlet box with included screws. Includes color-coordinated mounting screws, tagged leads, and detailed installation instructions. Extra-cost options include a resealable clamshell package for counter sales and a silicone seal for extra protection in difficult operating environments.
