    Instruction manual for the X10 UM506 Universal Module — a plug-in X10 receiver module with a single-pole relay for controlling furnaces (via low-voltage thermostat wires), low-voltage lighting, drapery controls, garage door openers, sprinkler systems, and more.

    Description

    The UM506 receives X10 ON/OFF signals and closes/opens its internal single-pole relay switch accordingly. It plugs into a standard 120VAC outlet and receives commands over house wiring from any X10 controller — mini-controller, mini-timer, handheld wireless remote, wall controller, or PC interface. The internal relay is a path interrupter for devices not powered above 24VDC (5A) or 30VAC (3.3A).

    X10 Protocol

    House Code Dial: letters A–P. Unit Number Dial: numbers 1–16. Each X10 receiver module is set to a unique unit number (or an identical unit number, if desired for group control). Each X10 controller operating a specific set of receiver modules must be set to the same house code as the receivers it controls.

    Electrical Protocol Note

    Nearly all residential homes are wired split-phase, with each 120V phase not directly connected to the other. If an X10 receiver doesn't respond to a remote controller after installation, check that the breaker serving the receiver is on the same phase as the controller — if not, move it to the opposite phase, or install a phase coupler to improve remote communications throughout the home.

    Installation

    1. Set the desired operation mode (see table below).
    2. Plug the UM506 into a 120VAC wall outlet.
    3. Connect the UM506, with two wires, to the terminals of the low-voltage device being controlled.

    Operation Modes

    Mode Behavior
    Momentary On an X10 "ON" command, the relay closes for ~1.5 seconds then releases.
    Continuous On an X10 "ON" command, the relay closes and stays closed until an "OFF" command is received. The relay does not change status due to a power loss.
    Sounder Only A sounder activates; no relay switching occurs.
    Sounder & Relay A sounder activates and relay switching occurs.
    Relay Only Only relay switching occurs.

    Testing the Module

    • Press ON — the module activates according to the selected mode.
    • Press OFF — the module switches off if in Continuous mode.

    Special Operations — Remote Contact Closure over Distance

    The UM506's output terminals can be directly wired to a PF284 PowerFlash Module's input terminals, letting an X10 ON/OFF command be sent to a detached facility on separate AC power via two low-voltage wires carrying minimal power:

    1. The UM506 receives an X10 ON command and closes its relay.
    2. The PF284 senses the contact closure and sends an X10 ON command onto the separate power system.
    3. The two low-voltage wires can be replaced with a wireless RF transmitter/receiver setup (non-X10) to pass the contact closure/command over long distances.

    In reverse, the PF284 senses a contact closure and sends an X10 ON command; the UM506, at a remote location on the same power system, receives it and emits a remote contact closure — useful for a detached garage security zone reporting a closure to an alarm panel.
