  • Yale Real Living Touchscreen Deadbolt (YRD220/YRD240) — Installation & Programming Instructions

    September 08, 2026 5 min read

Installation and programming instructions for the Yale Real Living Touchscreen Deadbolt (YRD220/YRD240 series).

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation and programming instructions for the Yale Real Living™ Touchscreen Deadbolt (YRD220/YRD240 series), covering physical installation, PIN code programming, feature settings, and troubleshooting.

    Box Contents

    • 3x #8-32 x 5/16" machine screws
    • 4x #7 wood & #8-32 machine x 20mm combination screws
    • 2x M6x47mm long through bolts

    Installation Steps

    1. Prepare the door for the standard bore and backset per the included template.
    2. Install latch & strike plate — the deadbolt latch supports both 2-3/8" and 2-3/4" backset positions. The bolt must be in the retracted (unlocked) position, noting the horizontal orientation of the mechanism, before installation.
    3. Install the touchscreen escutcheon on the outside of the door, again confirming the bolt is retracted and the mechanism is horizontally oriented.
    4. Install the interior mounting plate — loosen the screw to remove the battery cover first.
    5. Attach the cable assembly connecting the interior and exterior escutcheons.
    6. Install the interior escutcheon (secured with 3 screws).
    7. Test operation before installing batteries, then install batteries with the bolt in the retracted (unlocked) position.
    8. Install the optional radio/network module (if used) into the slot above the battery compartment.
    9. Install batteries and replace the battery cover, tightening the screw to secure it.

    Programming Instructions

    1. Creating the Master PIN Code

A Master PIN Code must be created upon installation or after a factory reset — no other programming or lock use is possible until this step is complete.

    1. Touch the screen to wake it — lock says "Register Master Code. Press the pound key to continue."
    2. Press #
    3. Enter a 4–8 digit PIN code followed by #
    4. Lock confirms "Registered."

    2. Creating User PIN Codes

The Master PIN code must exist first. Maximum user codes: 250 with the optional Network Module, 25 without it.

    1. Enter Master PIN code, press # — lock enters "Menu Mode."
    2. Enter the Menu number for User PIN Registration, press #
    3. Enter the User number (1–25 or 1–250), press #
    4. Enter a 4–8 digit PIN code (flashes on entry), press #
    5. Repeat to add more users, or press * to end programming.

    3. Unlocking with a PIN Code

Enter the PIN code, then press #.

    Factory Default Settings

    Setting Factory Default
    Master PIN Code Registration required
    Automatic Re-lock Disabled
    Inside Indicator Light Disabled (Off)
    One Touch Locking Enabled
    Volume Setting Enabled (Low)
    Automatic Re-lock Time 30 seconds
Wrong Code Entry Limit 5 times
    Shutdown Time 60 seconds

    Resetting to Factory Default

A reset deletes all user codes (including the Master PIN) and restores all factory default settings.

    1. Remove the battery cover and batteries.
    2. Remove the interior escutcheon to access the reset button, located above the PCB cable connector.
    3. While pressing the reset button (minimum 3 seconds), reinstall batteries. Release the button.
    4. Replace the battery cover.

After reset, creating the Master PIN Code is the only available option and must be completed before any other programming.

Feature Programming Menu (via Master PIN)

    • User PIN Code Registration — Register/Delete individual users (1-25 without Network Module, 1-250 with it).
    • Advanced Lock Settings — Automatic Re-lock (Enable/Disable), Inside Indicator Light (Enable/Disable), One Touch Locking (Enable/Disable), Privacy Button Setting (Enable/Disable), Handing the Lock (auto-detect door swing).
    • Volume Setting — High / Low (default) / Silent.
    • Language Setting — English (default), Spanish, French.
    • Lockout Mode — Enable/Disable (restricts all non-Master PIN access when enabled).
    • Network Module Setting (Network Module installed only) — Join/Exit the network.

    Key Terms

    • All Code Lockout Mode: Enabled by the Master code; restricts all user (except Master) PIN access — red locked padlock icon appears on attempted entry.
    • Automatic Re-lock: Re-locks automatically 30 seconds after a successful unlock.
    • Low Battery: Indicator flashes red when battery power is low; if power is fully lost, use the mechanical key override.
    • One Touch Locking: When latch is retracted, any keypad activation extends (locks) the latch during the re-lock window.
    • Tamper Alert: Sounds an audible alarm if someone attempts to forcibly remove the outside lock body from the door.
    • Wrong Code Entry Limit: After 5 unsuccessful attempts, the unit shuts down and blocks operation.

    Programming Troubleshooting

    Symptom Suggested Action
Lock doesn't respond, door open/accessible Use a larger area of the hand/fingers on the touchscreen, verifying contact with at least 3 areas.
Lock doesn't respond, door locked/inaccessible Check batteries are installed correctly and in good condition; if fully discharged, use the mechanical key to gain entry and replace batteries.
Unit chimes for code acceptance but door won't open Check for foreign objects in the door gap; verify the wire harness is firmly connected to the PCB.
Unit allows access but won't auto re-lock Check Auto Re-lock Mode is enabled; check low battery status.
PIN codes won't register Codes must be 4-8 digits, unique per user, entered within 5 seconds; contact the Master user if unclear.
"Invalid code" or lock times out Lockout Mode may be enabled — only the Master user can disable it.
Responds "Low Battery" Replace all 4 AA alkaline batteries.

    Hardware Troubleshooting

    • Bolt will not deadlock: Check clearance of the bolt in the strike-side jamb; increase pocket depth if needed. Check for bolt/strike misalignment.
    • Bolt doesn't extend/retract smoothly: Check bolt/strike alignment, door backset, door prep hole sizing, keypad wire harness routing (must be under the bolt), and bolt orientation (correct side up).
    • Keypad numerics scroll erratically: Remove the interior escutcheon and verify the wire harness lies flat, routed along the side of the escutcheon and tucked under the plastic cable guide.

    Replacing the Cylinder

    1. Remove the outside escutcheon and rubber gasket.
    2. Insert a small flathead screwdriver under the spring and gently lift it (notch on the cylinder engages the spring).
    3. Pull the cylinder outward to remove.
    4. Confirm the tailpiece is the correct length before installing a new cylinder: for 1-3/8"–2" thick doors, L = 3-1/2" (88.8mm); for 2"–2-1/4" thick doors, L = 3-3/4" (95.3mm). Requires the Thin Door Kit for 1-3/8" doors. Tailpiece thickness T = .098" (2.5mm), width W = .2" (5.2mm).
    5. Reverse the removal steps to install the new cylinder.
