Yale Assure Lock Interconnected Key-Free Touchscreen (YRC256) — Installation & Programming Instructions

Installation and programming instructions for the Yale Assure Lock Interconnected Key-Free Touchscreen (YRC256) — a keyless deadbolt/lever lockset with touchscreen PIN entry, compatible with optional Z-Wave, ZigBee, or Bluetooth network modules.

Note: Yale recommends downloading the BILT app for step-by-step installation instructions and to register your product. Fits doors with 4" or 5.5" backset spacing, 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" thick.

Before You Begin

• Retrofitting or modifying this product may impact fire rating, safety features, and warranty. Consult code specifications to ensure compliance with all codes and ratings before installation.
• Although a door can be prepared by an untrained person, Yale recommends measurements and drilling be performed by a skilled carpenter or locksmith.
• Standard backset options: 2-3/8" or 2-3/4". Recommended lock centerline: 36" (91cm) from floor.

Installation Overview

Full illustrated steps with templates are in the downloadable PDF. High-level sequence:

1. Prepare the door (drill holes per included template, if not already prepped)
2. Install strike plates in the door frame
3. Determine and, if necessary, change the lock's handing (Left Hand, Left Hand Reverse, Right Hand, Right Hand Reverse)
4. Install the Fire Cup (a Fire Cup and UL-marked latchbolt must be used to qualify for UL listing)
5. Adjust the deadbolt latch for your backset (2-3/8" default or 2-3/4" optional position)
6. Install the deadbolt latch and latchbolt (bolt must be in retracted/unlocked position first; confirm arrow stamped on deadbolt points UP)
7. Install the exterior deadbolt assembly
8. Install the lock chassis
9. Secure the back plate to the door (two #6-32 x 1/2" POHMS screws required for UL listing; drill two Ø1/8" x 1/2" deep pilot holes)
10. Test latchbolt operation
11. Attach the cable assembly (ensure cables are securely connected and routed clear of lock movement)
12. Install the interior lock and interior lever (turn thumbturn to adjust tailpiece orientation; pull the lever to confirm it's secure)
13. Test final latchbolt and deadbolt operation (deadbolt should operate smoothly with no resistance — if there's resistance, re-check installation and confirm mounting screws aren't over-tightened)
14. Install the optional Smart Module (do NOT install with batteries already in the unit — damage may occur)
15. Install batteries and the cover

After installing batteries and the cover (or after a factory reset), activate the touchscreen and create a Master PIN code — the lock will then automatically determine its handing.

Hardware Troubleshooting

Lockout note: This product has no mechanical key override. While Yale includes lockout-prevention features (9-volt battery jumper, low battery warnings), Yale recommends using this lock only where there are additional entry points into the dwelling.

Programming Instructions

Master PIN Code capacity: up to 250 users with a Z-Wave Plus or ZigBee network module; up to 25 without a network module or with the iM1 module; up to 12 with Bluetooth.

1. Creating the Master PIN Code

Must be performed upon installation or after a factory reset — programming and use of the lock is not possible until this step is complete. Touch the screen to activate; when prompted, enter a 4-8 digit PIN followed by the gear key. The lock will respond "Registered."

2. Creating User PIN Codes

Master PIN code must be created first. Enter the Master PIN, press the gear key, then follow prompts to enter each 4-8 digit user code (the code flashes to confirm). Repeat to add more users, or press the appropriate key to end programming.

3. Unlocking with a PIN Code

Simply enter any registered PIN code and press the gear key. Keep a code chart handy to track which PIN belongs to which user (Master + up to 16 users shown per chart with network module installed).

Resetting to Factory Default

Resetting deletes ALL user codes, including the Master PIN, and restores all programming to factory defaults.

1. Remove the battery cover and batteries.
2. Remove the interior lock to access the reset button hole.
3. Re-insert 3 batteries and insert a small screwdriver into the hole; hold the reset button for 3 seconds.
4. While still holding the reset button, insert the 4th battery and hold for an additional 3 seconds.
5. Release the reset button.
6. Re-install the interior lock onto the door.

For best results, the lock should be installed on the door when resetting. If reset off the door, review the Re-Handing instructions in Hardware Troubleshooting.

Factory Settings

Key Definitions

• All Code Lockout Mode: Enabled by the Master code; restricts all user (except Master) PIN access. A red locked padlock icon appears on screen while active.
• Automatic Re-lock Time: After a successful unlock, the unit automatically re-locks after the duration selected in Advanced Lock Settings.
• Low Battery / 9V Override: When battery power is low, the indicator flashes red. If power is completely lost, apply a 9V battery (either direction) to the terminals below the touchscreen for backup power, then wake the lock and enter your PIN.
• One Touch Locking: When latch is retracted, activating the keypad extends the latch. When disabled, any valid PIN code re-locks the lock.
• Privacy Mode: Disabled by default; enable by pressing the privacy button for 4 seconds to disable all PIN codes (do-not-disturb mode).
• Tamper Alert: Audible alarm sounds if someone attempts to forcibly remove the outside lock from the door.
• Wrong Code Entry Limit: After 5 unsuccessful PIN attempts, the unit shuts down (flashing red) for 60 seconds.

Menu Mode Quick Reference

Touch the screen to activate, enter your 4-8 digit Master PIN followed by the gear key, then enter the digit corresponding to the desired function followed by the gear key, and follow the voice prompts:

• 1 — Master PIN Code Setting
• 2 — User Codes (Enter/Delete)
• 3 — Advanced Lock Settings — Automatic Re-lock (Disable/30s/60s/2min/3min), Inside Indicator Light, One Touch Locking, Privacy Button Setting, Handing the Lock (auto)

• Language Setting Mode — English (default) / Spanish / French
• Lockout Mode — Enable / Disable
• Network Module Setting (with optional network module) — Join / Exit the network
• Set-up Digital Keys (requires P/N C620 module)
