Complete installation and setup guide for the Yale Assure Lock® 2 Keyed Deadbolt (Keypad YRD410 or Touchscreen YRD420).
Full installation and setup guide for the Yale Assure Lock® 2 Keyed Deadbolt, available in Keypad (YRD410) or Touchscreen (YRD420) versions. Covers door prep and measurement, latch/strike plate and keypad installation, DoorSense® sensor setup, using the lock, feature settings, and troubleshooting.
Warning: Failure to follow these instructions could result in damage to the product, voiding the factory warranty, and could lead to failure of the product to provide access.
Two installation options: Surface Mount (screwdriver only) or Flush Mount (cleaner look, more robust performance, requires drilling a 5/8" hole into the door frame).
After setup, go to Lock Settings in the app and select Calibrate Lock, then open/close the door to validate accuracy. If inaccurate, relocate DoorSense closer to the lock and recalibrate. Perform another calibration if readings drift over time.
To unlock the door:
Exterior keypad features: Yale logo (wake/one-touch locking), warnings light, mechanical key cylinder, indicator light. Interior lock features: battery cover, passage button, thumbturn.
| Setting | Default | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Programming Code | Auto-created by app | Used to access Handing, Smart Module integration, and Diagnostics — cannot unlock the door. Found in the Yale Access App; enter on keypad and press the gear symbol. |
| Hide Entry Codes | Off | If on, all entry codes are hidden from view in the app. |
| Verified Access | Off | If on, biometric/passcode authentication is required from the app to operate the lock. |
| Smart Alerts | Off | Create alerts you wish to receive from the app. |
| Auto-Lock | Off | Locks automatically on door close (with DoorSense) or a timer. |
| Auto-Unlock | Off | Unlocks automatically when you arrive home. |
| DoorSense | Must be installed | Reports whether the door is open or closed. |
| Volume | On | Toggle lock sound on/off via the app. |
| Operating Mode: Normal | On | All entry codes work; lock/unlock available from app and voice assistants. |
| Operating Mode: Vacation | Off | Restricts all entry code access; app-based lock/unlock still works. |
| Inside Indicator Light | Off | Shows locked status; also signals low battery, passage mode, and successful pairing. |
| Keypad Security: Wrong Code Limit | 5 times | After this many failed attempts, lock shuts down for 60 seconds. Adjustable 3-10 in the app. |
| Keypad Security: Shutdown Timing | 60 seconds | Lockout duration after wrong code limit is reached. Adjustable 10 seconds to 3 minutes in the app. |
| One Touch Locking | On | Lock the keypad by touching the Yale logo. |
| Passage Button | Off | Temporarily disables Auto-Lock; press interior button to enable, lock the door to disable. |
| Symptom | Suggested Action |
|---|---|
| Lock does not respond, door open/accessible | Verify contact with the Yale logo; check keypad numbers respond; check battery polarity/condition and replace if dead; check the keypad wire is fully connected and not pinched. |
| Lock does not respond, door locked/inaccessible | Batteries may be dead — use the mechanical key to unlock, then replace batteries. |
| Works briefly, then no reaction, lights dim | Batteries lack sufficient power — replace all 4. |
| Chimes (code accepted) but door won't open | Check for foreign objects between door and frame; check the wire is firmly connected to the interior lock. |
| Won't automatically unlock | Check if Auto-Lock is enabled; disable it to lock the door manually if needed. |
| "Low Battery" response | Replace all 4 AA alkaline batteries. |
| Entry code won't register | Check low battery indicator; code must be 4-8 digits; can't reuse a code across users; must be entered within 5 seconds while keypad is active. |
| "Invalid code" error or times out | Verify the code is valid and previously programmed; Vacation mode may be on (admin-only setting — contact admin). |
| "Wrong number of digits" response | Digits entered were incorrect/incomplete — re-enter and press the check key. |
| Deadbolt doesn't extend when locking via keypad | Lock was not handed properly — rehand via the Settings Menu (requires Programming Code). |
| No sound on operation | Check Volume setting in the Yale Access App. |
| Symptom | Solution |
|---|---|
| Deadbolt grinds/won't extend via keypad but thumbturn works smoothly | Attempt re-handing via the Settings Menu (requires Programming Code). |
| Deadbolt hitting the strike plate | Reposition the strike plate to align with the deadbolt. |
| Deadbolt not fully extending | Increase the depth of the deadbolt strike pocket in the frame. |
| Resistance locking, requires pushing/pulling the door to align | Adjust the existing knob/lever/handleset strike plate: remove with a hand screwdriver (not electric — may strip screws), locate the tab and bend slightly toward the strike surface, reinstall and retest. If insufficient, contact a locksmith. See US.YaleHome.com/Support for a door alignment video. |
Resetting removes the lock from the Yale Access App and clears all PIN codes and settings.
Do NOT install the Smart Module with batteries installed. If the lock was previously enrolled in a Z-Wave network, it will need to be set up again after reset. The lock must be set up again via the Yale Access App after any reset.
