    August 31, 2026 8 min read

Complete installation and setup guide for the Yale Assure Lock® 2 Keyed Deadbolt (Keypad YRD410 or Touchscreen YRD420).

    Full text manual (for reference)

Full installation and setup guide for the Yale Assure Lock® 2 Keyed Deadbolt, available in Keypad (YRD410) or Touchscreen (YRD420) versions. Covers door prep and measurement, latch/strike plate and keypad installation, DoorSense® sensor setup, using the lock, feature settings, and troubleshooting.

    Tools Needed

    • Standard Phillips head screwdriver, drill
    • To adjust an existing door or prep a new door: utility knife, pencil, wood mortise chisel, tape measure, level

Warning: Failure to follow these instructions could result in damage to the product, voiding the factory warranty, and could lead to failure of the product to provide access.

    What's in the Box

    • Exterior keypad, interior lock, mounting plate, battery cover, 4 AA batteries
    • Yale Smart Module (select models only)
    • DoorSense® components: flush mount cap, mounting tape, housing, cover
    • Adjustable deadbolt latch (AYRDB drive-in latch available for purchase separately), adjustable strike plate
    • Hardware: x2 screws/plastic clips (pre-installed), x4 strike plate & deadbolt screws (x20mm), x2 each of Screw Set B (blue, for 1-3/8" door), Screw Set C (black, standard 1-3/8"-1-3/4" door), Screw Set D (silver, 2"-2-1/4" door), optional security strike plate screws
    • Reset pin, key
    • Note: You must use the provided screws from the hardware pack when installing this lock.

    Installation Steps

    1. Remove existing deadbolt. Keep your old deadbolt until the new lock is successfully installed.
    2. Check door measurements and adjust if needed using the Check Your Door Guide (tear-off sheet in the printed guide) or these reference dimensions:
      • A. 2" minimum clearance between top of existing lever/knob rose and center of deadbolt hole (2" tolerance for optimal DoorSense location)
      • B. 1-3/8" door thickness — use blue Screw Set B (shortest)
      • C. 1-3/8"-1-3/4" door thickness — use black Screw Set C
      • D. 2"-2-1/4" door thickness — use silver Screw Set D (longest)
      • E. 2-3/8" backset — use out-of-box latch setting
      • F. 2-3/4" backset — adjust latch setting
      • G. 1-1/2" face bore diameter (remove the black adapter per manual instructions)
      • H. 2-1/8" face bore diameter
      • I. 1" edge/cross bore diameter and depth
    3. Install deadbolt latch and strike plate. Correct latch length depends on backset — choose 2-3/8" (out of box) or 2-3/4" (twist neck while holding body stable to adjust). The deadbolt latch must be in the unlocked position with the UP arrow facing upward. Align the strike plate with the deadbolt latch on the door frame. If the latch is extended, use fingers or a small flathead screwdriver to rotate the slot until retracted.
    4. Verify bore face measurement for the exterior keypad. Install the lock with the door open — do not close until all steps are complete. If the bore hole is less than 2-1/8", remove the black adapter by unscrewing the two side screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver. Ensure the deadbolt latch is unlocked so the tailpiece can slide through it.
    5. Install mounting plate and exterior keypad. There are 3 bolt sets — choose based on door thickness (B/C/D per the Door Checker). Position the keypad outside the door, feed the wire through the front wire hole in the plate, insert 2 bolts through the plate, and hand-tighten with a Phillips screwdriver, keeping plate and keypad straight.
    6. Attach wire to inside of interior lock. Ridges face outward; make sure the wire is attached securely.
    7. Install interior lock. Tailpiece must be horizontal, thumbturn must be vertical. Insert the tailpiece into the slot, push the lock toward the door and adjust position until the plate spring latch clicks into place. Screws are pre-installed — tighten once the lock is seated on the plate; it should sit flush to the door when fully tightened.
    8. Test thumbturn and key. If the deadbolt doesn't lock/unlock via thumbturn, check the tailpiece is inserted into both the deadbolt latch slot (Step 3) and thumbturn slot (Step 7). If it doesn't lock/unlock via key, check the latch is centered in the face bore hole (Step 3) and the tailpiece is seated (Step 4).
    9. Install Yale Smart Module (select models only). Batteries must NOT be installed when inserting or removing the Smart Module.
    10. Install batteries and replace cover. Place the ribbon behind the batteries for easy removal later. Deadbolt latch must be unlocked before installing batteries. A pink light and audio sound indicate successful power-up; the numbers will light up clockwise, indicating pairing mode — connect via the Yale Access App within 5 minutes, or touch the Yale logo to restart the connection window.

    Installing DoorSense®

Two installation options: Surface Mount (screwdriver only) or Flush Mount (cleaner look, more robust performance, requires drilling a 5/8" hole into the door frame).

    Surface Mount

    1. Determine mounting location — within 1.5" of the door frame edge, aligned with the Smart Module (if installed) and centered on the Yale logo.
    2. Attach mounting tape — remove one side of adhesive, attach tape to the back of DoorSense aligned with the edges/screw holes, remove the remaining adhesive backing.
    3. Place on the door frame, pressing the adhesive side to the frame.
    4. Screw into the frame (hand-tighten) — you may prefer to complete this after the lock is set up and calibrated.
    5. Attach the cover by pressing it onto the housing.

After setup, go to Lock Settings in the app and select Calibrate Lock, then open/close the door to validate accuracy. If inaccurate, relocate DoorSense closer to the lock and recalibrate. Perform another calibration if readings drift over time.

    Flush Mount

    1. Remove the magnet from the housing using a small blunt object (may require some force).
    2. Assemble the magnet to the cap — expose the adhesive by removing the blue backing, press the cap onto the notched side of the magnet carrier (the clips/notches should interlock).
    3. Determine mounting location — 1.5" at most from the top edge of the strike plate, centered on the door frame.
    4. Tape the drill bit to mark the proper depth (1/2" deep hole required — the assembled flush mount unit can serve as a depth guide).
    5. Drill the 5/8" hole in the marked location on the door frame.
    6. Insert DoorSense into the hole — if snug, protect the frame with scrap wood and use light hammer/mallet taps.
    7. Calibrate the lock following the app instructions until DoorSense is successfully calibrated.

    Using Your Lock

    To unlock the door:

    1. Press the Yale logo on the exterior keypad.
    2. Enter the entry code.
    3. Press the checkmark.

Exterior keypad features: Yale logo (wake/one-touch locking), warnings light, mechanical key cylinder, indicator light. Interior lock features: battery cover, passage button, thumbturn.

    Features

    • DoorSense: Tells you if the door is closed or open. Note: voice assistants can only report locked/unlocked state, not door open/closed.
    • Entry Codes: Created from the "Guest List" screen in the Yale Access App. Can be set permanent, recurring, or on a temporary schedule. Unlimited codes can be created/deleted at any time.
    • Auto-Lock: Automatically locks the door on a timer (30 seconds to 30 minutes). With DoorSense installed, won't lock until the door is confirmed closed. Configured in app lock settings.
    • Auto-Unlock: Detects your arrival and unlocks the door as you approach. Configured in app lock settings.
    • Passage Mode: Disables Auto-Lock temporarily — press the interior passage button to enable; lock the door to turn it off.
    • Integrations: Works with select smart home brands via the "Works With" screen in the Yale Access App.

    Troubleshooting

    Symptom Suggested Action
Lock does not respond, door open/accessible Verify contact with the Yale logo; check keypad numbers respond; check battery polarity/condition and replace if dead; check the keypad wire is fully connected and not pinched.
Lock does not respond, door locked/inaccessible Batteries may be dead — use the mechanical key to unlock, then replace batteries.
Works briefly, then no reaction, lights dim Batteries lack sufficient power — replace all 4.
Chimes (code accepted) but door won't open Check for foreign objects between door and frame; check the wire is firmly connected to the interior lock.
Won't automatically unlock Check if Auto-Lock is enabled; disable it to lock the door manually if needed.
"Low Battery" response Replace all 4 AA alkaline batteries.
Entry code won't register Check low battery indicator; code must be 4-8 digits; can't reuse a code across users; must be entered within 5 seconds while keypad is active.
"Invalid code" error or times out Verify the code is valid and previously programmed; Vacation mode may be on (admin-only setting — contact admin).
"Wrong number of digits" response Digits entered were incorrect/incomplete — re-enter and press the check key.
Deadbolt doesn't extend when locking via keypad Lock was not handed properly — rehand via the Settings Menu (requires Programming Code).
No sound on operation Check Volume setting in the Yale Access App.

    Hardware Troubleshooting

    Symptom Solution
Deadbolt grinds/won't extend via keypad but thumbturn works smoothly Attempt re-handing via the Settings Menu (requires Programming Code).
Deadbolt hitting the strike plate Reposition the strike plate to align with the deadbolt.
Deadbolt not fully extending Increase the depth of the deadbolt strike pocket in the frame.
Resistance locking, requires pushing/pulling the door to align Adjust the existing knob/lever/handleset strike plate: remove with a hand screwdriver (not electric — may strip screws), locate the tab and bend slightly toward the strike surface, reinstall and retest. If insufficient, contact a locksmith. See US.YaleHome.com/Support for a door alignment video.

    Resetting to Factory Defaults

Resetting removes the lock from the Yale Access App and clears all PIN codes and settings.

    1. Remove the battery cover and one battery.
    2. Press the reset button for 1 minute using the provided reset tool.
    3. Replace the cover.

Do NOT install the Smart Module with batteries installed. If the lock was previously enrolled in a Z-Wave network, it will need to be set up again after reset. The lock must be set up again via the Yale Access App after any reset.
