X10 PRO XPCP — Passive Phase Coupler Installation Instructions

Installation instructions for the X10 PRO XPCP Passive Phase Coupler — a 1:1 signal bridge for split-phase (120/240V) electrical systems that helps X10 powerline commands cross from one leg of the panel to the other.

What It Does

Nearly all U.S. residential homes are wired split-phase, with two 120V legs (L1 and L2) that are not directly connected to each other electrically. X10 signals sent by a controller on one leg often fail to reach receivers on the opposite leg. The XPCP solves this by passively bridging L1 and L2 so X10 commands pass through in both directions — L1 to L2 and L2 to L1. It is not a noise filter; it simply couples the two phases together.

When to Use It

The XPCP is intended for split-phase 120/240V systems, generally in homes of 2,000 sq ft or smaller. For larger homes or homes with lots of electronic devices generating powerline noise, the XPCR Phase Coupler/Repeater (an active, amplified version) is recommended instead of the passive XPCP.

Installation Steps

1. Turn off power at the MAIN breaker panel.
2. Install the XPCP into a suitable workbox or equivalent enclosure per local code.
3. Connect the N1 terminal to the N2 terminal, then run a white wire from N1/N2 to the neutral bus bar.
4. Connect the L1 terminal to the L1 breaker terminal.
5. Connect the L2 terminal to the L2 breaker terminal.
6. Check all wire connections for security, then restore power.

Installation must be performed by qualified installers only, in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and all applicable local codes. The red LED on the XPCP is a status/inactive indicator only.

Troubleshooting Tip

If an X10 receiver does not respond to a remote controller after installation, check whether the receiver's breaker is on the same phase as the controller's. If not, either move the breaker to match, or install a phase coupler (like the XPCP) to bridge communications. X10 PRO's optional test equipment (XPTT/XPTR) can be used to verify signal strength. Optional XPPF/XPF filters are also available to reduce electrical noise interference from other devices.
