X10 Mini Controller (MC10A) — Owner's Manual

Owner's manual for the X10 Mini Controller (Model MC10A) — a handheld remote that sends X10 signals over your home's existing electrical wiring to control Lamp Modules, Appliance Modules, and Wall Switch Modules.

Overview

The Mini Controller lets you remotely turn lights and appliances on or off, and dim/brighten lamps, from anywhere in the home — commands are sent over your existing house wiring to the connected Modules. Lamp Modules dim/brighten incandescent lamps up to 300 watts; Wall Switch Modules dim/brighten up to 500 watts; Appliance Modules turn appliances on/off (no dimming) — not for use with "instant on" TVs.

Caution: Be careful using the Mini Controller with appliances — accidentally turning on an unattended coffee pot or heater can create a fire hazard.

Setup

1. Plug the Mini Controller's power cord into any functioning wall outlet.
2. Set the slide switch on top for the module group you want to control (1-4 or 5-8).
3. Using a small screwdriver, set the Housecode dial to one of 16 letters. Set the Mini Controller and all Modules it will control to the same Housecode letter.

Having 16 Housecode choices lets you run several independent systems in one home without interaction, and avoid interference from a neighbor's X10 system.

Using the Mini Controller

• Turn ON a light/appliance: Press and release the TOP of the number key matching the Unit Code set on the target Module.
• Turn ON all lights: Press the TOP of the "All Lights On/All Units Off" key (affects Lamp/Wall Switch Modules only, not Appliance Modules).
• Turn OFF a light/appliance: Press and release the BOTTOM of the matching number key.
• Turn off all modules (including appliances): Press the BOTTOM of the "All Lights On/All Units Off" key.
• Dim/Brighten: Press TOP of the target Lamp/Wall Switch Module's number key, then press and hold TOP of the Dim/Bright key to brighten, or BOTTOM to dim (not available for Appliance Modules).

Troubleshooting

A particular Module won't respond

• Check power at the outlet and that the light/appliance switch is ON.
• Check the Unit Code on the Module matches, and the 1-4/5-8 selector on the Mini Controller.
• Check both the Module's and Mini Controller's Housecode dial match.
• Try plugging the Module and Mini Controller into the same outlet/duplex receptacle to isolate a defective unit.

No Modules respond at all

• Check power to the Mini Controller's outlet and confirm the Housecode setting.
• If nothing works even in the same duplex receptacle, the Mini Controller itself may be defective — contact x10.com/support.

Other Notes

• Intercom interference: Intercom systems sending voice over the same electrical wiring may interfere with Mini Controller operation while in use (systems with separate dedicated wiring won't cause issues).
• Power interruptions: After a power outage, Lamp Modules and Wall Switch Modules default to OFF; Appliance Modules retain their prior state.
• Local control: Lights/appliances on plug-in Modules can be toggled with their own power switch — turn OFF then ON once or twice (may need a few tries for 3-way bulbs). The Wall Switch Module's push button toggles locally; its power switch fully cuts power (e.g. for bulb changes).
