    Installation instructions for the STI Steel Web Stopper series ceiling-mounted smoke detector guards — models STI-9601, STI-9602, STI-9604SS, STI-9609SS, and STI-9610 — protecting smoke detectors from tampering and accidental damage.

    Overview

    STI Ceiling Mounted Smoke Detector Guards use a steel wire-guard design to protect low- and high-profile smoke detectors from vandalism and accidental impact while allowing the detector to remain fully visible and functional. Each guard includes anchors, clamps, and mounting screws; an optional backplate (STI-8170 or STI-8171) is recommended for unstable mounting surfaces.

    Important: Do not attempt to install the wire guard until the smoke sensor has been tested and confirmed in proper working order according to the manufacturer's installation instructions furnished with the sensor unit.

    Installation

    1. Center the wire guard over the existing smoke detector.
    2. Mark and drill (4) mounting holes (see the model dimension table for hole spacing). Insert anchors into the ceiling.
    3. Note: If lag shields and lag bolts are used, make sure the anchor is flush with the surface. Position the guard, insert lag bolts, and tighten. Bolt length should be selected to assure full thread engagement in the anchor.
    4. STI-8170 backplate: STI recommends using this plate on all unstable mounting surfaces.
    5. Insert screws through clamps and backplate (if used) and screw into anchors, but do not tighten yet.
    6. Position the guard over the detector, slide clamps onto the top wire of the guard, and tighten screws.

    Service

    1. Periodic cleaning of the smoke detector is required so dust and other matter do not accumulate.
    2. To service the smoke sensor unit, loosen (but do not remove) the (4) screws, rotate the clamps, and carefully remove the wire guard.
