    Installation manual for the Simply Automated Universal Inverting Phase Coupler, model ZPCI — used to couple UPB (Universal Powerline Bus), X10, and broadband signals across the two 120VAC power circuits in a split-phase residential installation.

    Overview

    Typically one phase coupler is used per breaker panel in a home (for three-phase power applications like condominiums, see model UTR instead). Models ZPCI-W and ZPCI-B include built-in surge suppression.

    This inverting phase coupler is unique in that it complements inverted UPB signals reflected back from street-side power transformers. Each additional inverting phase coupler used actually adds signal strength between phases — unlike conventional phase couplers, where adding more than one attenuates and weakens the signal.

    Available Models

    • ZPCI-B — Installs in a tandem-breaker position in many load centers (Cutler-Hammer, Square-D, Murray, GE).
    • ZPCI-W — Installs in a junction box mounted near the home's load center.
    • ZPCI-P30A / ZPCI-P50A (30A / 50A) — Plugs into a 220VAC power receptacle, or in-line between a 220VAC receptacle and the plug of a high-power appliance (clothes dryer, air conditioner, stove). Uses NEMA 10-30 and 10-50 plugs respectively.

    Important Safety Instructions

    • Do not install this device with power connected — injury or permanent damage may result, and improper installation voids the warranty.
    • Connect only copper or copper-clad wire.
    • Keep away from water; unplug immediately if contact occurs.
    • Never use products that have been dropped or damaged.
    • Do not use outdoors.
    • Install out of reach of small children to avoid risk of fire, burns, injury, or shock.
    • Caution — these devices store an electrical charge, presenting a minor shock hazard. Always discharge the phase coupler (short with an insulated metal tool) before touching any connections, after removing power.

    Installation — ZPCI-W

    1. Install a single-gang junction box (per local code) at a location where 15A circuits from both AC power phases can be accessed. Mount the phase coupler in the box.
    2. Disconnect power at the circuit breakers controlling both phase connection points, or at the main breaker.
    3. Connect the black wire of the phase coupler to the protected side of Phase 1 (Line A) using 15A-rated copper wire. Connect the other black wire to Phase 2 (Line B) similarly.
    4. Connect the white wire to Neutral using 15A-rated copper wire.
    5. Restore power and verify all 3 LEDs are illuminated. Install the cover plate.

    Installation — ZPCI-B

    1. Disconnect power at the main breaker.
    2. Connect the white wire of the phase coupler to the Neutral rail.
    3. Install the phase coupler into an available tandem 2-phase slot in the load center, per the manufacturer's instructions.
    4. Restore power and verify all 3 LEDs are illuminated.

    Installation — ZPCI-P30A / ZPCI-P50A

    1. Disconnect power to the 220VAC receptacle at the breaker.
    2. If present, disconnect the appliance power plug from the wall outlet.
    3. If present, fully insert the appliance power plug into the receptacle of the ZPCI-Px0A.
    4. Insert the ZPCI-Px0A fully into the 220VAC wall outlet.
    5. Restore power to the receptacle at the breaker.
    6. An appliance connection is optional; if connected, verify it has power and operates normally.

    LED Indicators (ZPCI-W and ZPCI-B only)

    Phase coupling and surge suppression are active when all 3 LEDs are illuminated:

    • An extinguished PHASE COUPLER LED indicates an improper Line connection or that the internal phase coupling circuitry isn't working.
    • An extinguished SURGE A or SURGE B LED indicates an improper Neutral connection or that the internal surge suppression circuitry isn't working.
