    Installation, configuration, and troubleshooting manual for the Simply Automated SimplyBrilliant™ UPB Dual Output, Universal Dimming Transceiver Base, Model US22-40.

    Overview

    The US22-40 provides two independently controllable ON/OFF, dimming, and Timed OFF outputs for incandescent, magnetic low-voltage, and halogen lighting, using UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) powerline communication — no new wiring or RF signals required. It replaces an existing wall switch and installs in a standard junction box wired to the building's over-current protection per NEC/CEC codes. Interchangeable actuator faceplates (Model ZSXX series, rocker or pushbutton style) snap onto the US22 base without disconnecting wiring, letting installers change function and color in the field.

    Each channel supports up to 550W (1,100W combined, de-rated per gang — see table below). Actuator faceplates can also act as UPB scene-link transmitters, communicating with other UPB devices on the powerline.

    Important Safety Warnings

    • DO NOT INSTALL TO CONTROL A RECEPTACLE. The default configuration is a dimmer for incandescent lamps; fluorescent, electronic low-voltage, metal halide loads, or motor/transformer-supplied appliances and fans require reconfiguring the switch for ON/OFF (non-dimming) operation first.
    • DO NOT WIRE HOT. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker before installing. Wiring with power connected can cause injury or permanent device damage and voids the warranty.
    • Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician.
    • Keep away from water; do not use outdoors; do not install in areas that can exceed 120°F (e.g., an attic); do not cover the switch with any material while in use.
    • Do not exceed the maximum load rating, de-rated for multi-gang boxes (see table).

    Total watts is per both channels combined; not to exceed 550W per channel.

    Installation Steps

    1. Locate the existing wall switch; verify connected lamp load(s) don't exceed the de-rating table above.
    2. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker.
    3. Remove the existing wall switch hardware and disconnect wires.
    4. Wire-nut all white (Neutral) wires together, including the US22's white wire.
    5. Wire-nut the US22's BROWN channel 1 (load output) wire to the black wire of the first device load, and the RED channel 2 wire to the black wire of the second device load. Do not connect brown and red load wires together — one channel may overload.
    6. For 3-way or more installations, wire-nut the brown/white "REMOTE 1" or red/white "REMOTE 2" wire to the second 3-way switch traveler.
    7. Wire-nut the black (Line) wire of the US22-40 to the black (Line) power wire.
    8. Mount the switch in the J-box using captive screws — do not over-tighten.
    9. Reconnect power at the circuit breaker.

    Configuration

    Configuration requires Simply Automated's UPStart setup software and a model UMC Computer Interface Module. The US22-40 ships preconfigured for a ZS24 (quad rocker) faceplate; the factory default scene-links for channel 1 and channel 2 local loads are Link 241 and Link 242 respectively. Any rocker or button can be reassigned to control local loads via UPStart's device-type selection.

    Setup Mode

    To place the US22 in SETUP mode (required for initial network self-identification), tap any rocker/pushbutton exactly 5 times consecutively; the LED blinks green twice, repeating, and stays in SETUP mode for 5 minutes. Tap 5 times again to exit back to NORMAL mode.

    Auto-Off Timer

    Each channel supports an auto-off timer, preset via scene-link or rocker tap. Available preset times: 1 Sec., 5 Sec., 30 Sec., 1 Min., 2 Min., 4 Min., 10 Min., 20 Min., 30 Min., 40 Min., 50 Min., 1 Hr., 2 Hrs., 3 Hrs., 4 Hrs. Default is Timer Off.

    Local Response Time

    Adjustable via UPStart: 300, 450, 600, or default 750 mSec. Faster (300mS) response suits rockers/toggle/separate ON-OFF buttons; slower settings (e.g. 450mS) accommodate double-tap/multi-button functions for users who tap slowly.

    Factory Default Settings

    To restore factory defaults: place the US22 in SETUP mode (5 taps), then tap any actuator exactly 10 times — indicator blinks blue twice, repeating. Tap 5 more times to finish.

    Manual Scene Modification (No Software Needed)

    • Create/modify a scene from a US22 actuator: set all scene devices to desired levels, place in SETUP mode, tap the scene actuator (e.g. button 1) exactly 7 times.
    • Add a different device to an existing scene: activate the scene, set light level on the device to add, place it in SETUP mode, tap the transmitting device's scene actuator exactly 7 times.
    • Add a US22 channel to an existing scene: activate the scene, set light level, place US22 in setup mode, then tap the US22 once (wait 3 sec) and tap once more for channel 1, or tap once for channel 2 (blue/green LED), or tap twice (wait 3 sec) and twice more for both channels — then tap the transmitting device's actuator 7 times.
    • Remove a device from a scene: place the device in SETUP mode, tap the scene actuator on the transmitting device exactly 8 times.
    • Change light levels on an existing scene: set desired levels, tap the scene actuator exactly 7 times.

    Power Disconnection & Overload Protection

    To manually disconnect power to the load, pull out the clear plastic indicator tab under the rocker about 0.2" until it stays in place — the LED extinguishes. Push the tab back in to reconnect. A built-in thermal sensor automatically turns off the load if the switch overheats (from overload, incompatible dimming loads, or ambient temperatures above 120°F); if the load cycles on/off without command, reduce the connected load.

    Changing Faceplates

    To install: align the clear plastic light pipe with the faceplate recess, align the four prongs with the switch body's slots, squeeze and press the faceplate on until all four prongs latch, then exercise each rocker/button to confirm proper seating.

    To remove: take off the wall plate, press the top two prongs inward to unlatch the top, then press the two lower prongs inward and pull the faceplate away and slightly downward. Changing faceplate function type requires re-configuration via UPStart.

    To relabel: lift the clear plastic label cover off the oval/thin-bar button faceplate, flip it to hide switch numbers, or order a custom label kit (Model ZLK-01, specify color) to print your own labels.

    Troubleshooting
