User manual for the Serene Innovations UA-45 Universal Phone Amplifier — a portable, battery-powered amplifier that connects between any modular corded phone handset and base, boosting incoming call volume up to 170 times for louder, clearer conversations.

Important Safety Instructions

WARNING – basic precautions should always be followed when using telephone equipment or electric appliances, including:

• Read all instructions before use.
• Close supervision is necessary when used near children.
• Do not contact moving parts or exposed metal surfaces.
• Only use manufacturer-recommended attachments.
• Do not use outdoors or near water (bath tub, sink, laundry tub, wet basement, or swimming pool).
• To disconnect, turn all controls off, then remove the plug — grasp the plug, not the cord.
• Unplug before servicing or cleaning, or when not in use.
• Do not operate with a damaged cord/plug or after malfunction/dropping.
• Use only the power cord and batteries specified in the manual; do not dispose of batteries in fire.
• Plug any power adapter into an easily accessible socket-outlet near the equipment.
• Avoid use during electrical storms.
• Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak.

Installation & Setup

1. Install a 9-volt battery (not included). Use a coin to pry open the battery door. Always disconnect the UA-45 before replacing the battery.
2. Connect the UA-45 to your telephone handset using the provided short cord, and connect UA-45 to the phone base. (Ignore the ON/OFF indicator while making switch settings — it's not relevant yet.)
3. Set the Volume control to its mid-point and the Tone Control Switch to Position 2.
4. Set the Compatibility Switch (7 positions — positions 1–6 for compatibility, position 7 is an emergency "by-pass" with no amplification, for total power outages only):
   1. Set to Position 1 (the most common setting for most phones).
   2. Lift the handset and verify a clear dial tone.
   3. If unclear, hang up, move to the next position, and repeat step B.
   4. If the dial tone is clear, verify volume can be changed by rotating the volume control — if so, go to step F.
   5. If volume can't be changed, hang up and move to the next Compatibility position, then repeat step B.
   6. Make a call using the phone's keypad and verify you can hear each other clearly.
   7. If you can hear each other, the current Compatibility switch position is correct — record it for future reference.
   8. If not, try the next position until you can hear each other clearly.
5. While talking, verify you can adjust handset volume by rotating the UA-45's volume control. Lower the volume if you notice a squealing sound.
6. Try different Tone Control settings to find the clearest incoming sound. Record this setting — you won't need to change it again.
7. Press and hold the BOOST button to verify incoming voice becomes louder and the BOOST LED lights. Release the button when speaking, since your outgoing voice is muted while it's held.
8. The ON/OFF indicator should light while the phone is in use, and turn off 8–15 seconds after hanging up (or after 8–15 seconds of no sound).
9. A 9-volt alkaline battery typically lasts 6–12 months. Replace it if the ON/OFF indicator dims or the receiver sound distorts.
10. An optional 9V DC adapter (not included) can provide normal operating power, with the battery serving as backup during outages. Replace the battery every two years, or sooner if the ON/OFF indicator fails to light during a power outage.

One-year limited warranty from date of purchase covering defects in materials and workmanship under intended home use. Return the unit (freight prepaid) with proof of purchase to Serene Innovations for repair or replacement. Free repair/replacement within 30 days of purchase; a $9.95 handling charge applies for returns made 30 days to 1 year after purchase. Does not cover accidental damage, abuse, misuse, unauthorized alterations, or use on incorrect voltage/frequency.
