    Overview

    The Sensaphone WSG30 Wireless Sensor Gateway monitors up to 30 wireless sensors — Temperature, Humidity, Water Detection, Power, Dry Contacts, and 4-20mA current loop signals — using 2.4GHz mesh-networking wireless technology. Alarms can be delivered by email, SMS text, or SNMP trap to up to 8 user profiles. The gateway has a built-in rechargeable battery backup and connects to your network via Ethernet.

    Installation

    Physical & Environment

    • Enclosure: 7.6"w x 5.1"h x 2.0"d, wall-mountable with (4) #6 screws (drywall anchors as needed)
    • Operating temperature: 32°–122°F (0°–50°C); Humidity: 5–90% RH non-condensing
    • Requires a 120VAC 60Hz outlet within 6 ft and a nearby 10/100 Ethernet jack
    • Install centrally to minimize wireless path length to all sensors

    Setup Steps

    1. Attach the included antenna, plug in the 9VDC power supply, and connect the Ethernet cable.
    2. Mark and drill mounting holes (2 keyholes or 4 mounting holes), install drywall anchors if needed, and screw the enclosure to the wall.
    3. To fully power down: press Menu → Diagnostics → Power Down, then unplug the power supply.
    4. Backup battery: 6V 1.3AH rechargeable (part # BAT-0020). Replace by removing the 4 bottom-cover screws, separating the enclosure, and swapping the battery on its bracket.

    Network Configuration

    By default the WSG30 attempts DHCP. If no DHCP server is found, it falls back to a fixed IP of 192.168.1.250 (should only be used temporarily to avoid conflicts).

    • DHCP network: plug in Ethernet and power, check the LCD for the acquired IP, browse to that IP, then go to Setup → Network to disable DHCP and assign a fixed IP, gateway, subnet mask, and DNS.
    • Non-DHCP network: configure via the keypad/LCD (Menu → Network Config), or temporarily change your PC's network settings to the 192.168.1.x range and browse to 192.168.1.250 using a crossover cable, hub, or DHCP-capable switch.
    • Wireless Channel: defaults to 1; if you have more than one WSG30, each must use a unique channel (channel is unrelated to sensor RF frequency).

    Configuring Wireless Sensors

    Two important rules: (1) configure sensors one at a time — do not power up all sensors before configuring the system; (2) if you have more than 7 sensors, one or more must be configured as a Router and added to the system first.

    Routers vs. End Points

    • End Point: sends readings back to the WSG30 (or a nearby router) then sleeps in a low-power state — can run on AA batteries for up to ~2 years.
    • Router: provides a redundant wireless relay path, extending range by ~300 ft per router; must use an external power supply (batteries serve only as backup).
    • Guideline: up to 7 sensors within 300 ft needs no router; 8–15 sensors needs at least 1 router (placed midway); 16–23 needs at least 2 routers; 24–30 needs at least 3 routers, placed centrally and equidistant.

    Adding / Deleting Sensors

    To add: Sensors menu → Add → enter Name, Serial Number (found on the label inside the sensor), Mode (End Point/Router), and Sampling Frequency (1–5 seconds), then Save. Insert batteries (and power supply if a Router), and watch the Summary/Sensors screen to confirm connection. Faster sampling reduces battery life — e.g. a 1-second interval yields ~10 months of battery life, while a 5-second interval yields ~3 years.

    To delete: while the sensor is still online, check its box on the Sensors screen and click Delete (or use the keypad: Menu → Inputs → select sensor → Delete → confirm). Wait at least 2 minutes before removing power from the sensor.

    Programming (Web Interface)

    Access the web page by browsing to the unit's IP address. Key setup sections:

    • System: Unit Name/Description/Location (shown on the web page and alarm messages), time server sync, and Escalation Delay (delays alarm delivery to lower-priority users if the alarm persists).
    • SMTP: configure your outgoing mail server, return address, port (25 or 587 typical), and optional authentication. Note: the WSG30 does not support TLS/SSL — it will not work with Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo!Mail, or AOL. Contact Sensaphone support if you lack a compatible SMTP server.
    • SNMP: supports v1/v2c over UDP/TCP with read/write access and alarm traps; a full SNMPv1 MIB ships on the WSG30 CD.
    • Modbus®: acts as a Modbus TCP slave device — configurable mode, port, and bit representation (see the Modbus register map in the full manual).
    • Network: view/configure Ethernet parameters and the web page port (non-default ports must be specified in the browser URL as host:port).
    • Admin: save/load full programming (excluding network settings and admin password), update firmware, factory reset, and set the Administrator password (username is always "admin"; deleting the password disables user logins entirely).

    Sensor Edit Parameters

    Each sensor has extensive per-input configuration: Enable/Disable, display Name, Mode (End Point/Router), Type (F/C for temperature, N.O./N.C. for dry contacts), Units (including custom text pairs like "Dry/Wet"), Calibration offset, 4-20mA Table Low/High scaling, Alarm Low/High thresholds, Recognition Time (how long a fault must persist before alarming), Alarm Hold Time (prevents repeat notifications), a weekly half-hour-resolution Alarm Delivery Schedule, Profile selection (who gets notified), optional Alarm Reset (re-sends notifications if unresolved — recommended minimum 30 minutes), and Return-to-Normal notification.

    Data logging: Continuous mode logs on a fixed interval at all times (with separate Normal and Alarm intervals); While-In-Alarm mode logs only during alarm conditions to conserve storage. Setting sensor intervals as multiples of each other maximizes total logging capacity — the WSG30 can store roughly 67,000 samples logging just 1 sensor, up to ~238,000–243,000 samples per sensor when logging 15–30 sensors at the same interval. Once full, the oldest records are overwritten.

    User Profiles & Contacts

    Up to 8 User Profiles, each with up to 4 contacts (email, SMS text, or SNMP trap). Profiles can have Read-Only or Read-Write access (Read-Write excludes Network/Admin screens), a 1–8 Escalation Priority, and their own weekly delivery schedule. A Test button lets you verify each contact's programming before relying on it.

    History (Event Log & Data Log)

    Query either log by sensor, time range (Previous 24 Hours, Last 7 Days, Current Month, or Custom), and record count (25/50/100/All). Results can be viewed on-screen or exported as TXT, CSV, or XML for use in programs like Excel.

    Wireless Sensor Types & Specs

    All wireless sensors share common installation steps: note the serial number on the sensor's internal label, register it in the WSG30, mount the sensor, attach power/batteries, then confirm connection on the LCD or web page. General notes: avoid dirty/humid/corrosive environments, keep away from other 2.4GHz devices (WiFi, etc.), and never install inside a metallic enclosure (blocks wireless signal).

    All sensors operate on the ISM 2.4GHz band at 100mW (20dBm) transmit power and require the standard installation clearances/environmental limits noted above. Routers of any type require an external power supply (batteries backup only); End Points can run on AA batteries alone.

    Weekly Testing Procedure (Recommended)

    1. Check the web page status of all monitored conditions to confirm sensors are communicating and reading correctly, and that main power and backup battery are OK.
    2. Trigger an alarm on each sensor type (heat/cool a temp sensor, apply humidity, open/close a dry contact, apply water to a water sensor, unplug the power sensor) and confirm alarm messages reach all programmed contacts.
    3. Test battery backup by unplugging the WSG30 (and each sensor's power supply) and confirming continued operation.
    4. Call Sensaphone Technical Support at (610) 558-2700 if issues arise.
