    Full Installation Manual for the SECO-LARM ENFORCER® SD-993B-SS Electric Shear Lock — a concealed, fail-safe electric shear lock for remote access and exit control of aluminum and steel doors or gates, with 1,500 lbs. of shear holding force.

    Overview

    • Concealed security for remote access and exit control of aluminum and steel doors or gates.
    • Smaller size for use with most metal door jambs.
    • Zinc-plated magnet and armature, aluminum anodized housing.
    • Works with sliding, single-action, and double-action (swing-through) doors and gates.

    Important: It is the responsibility of the end user and the dealer/installer to ensure this unit is mounted in accordance with all local fire and other safety regulations. This unit is not fire-rated. Some method, such as a relay, must be used to ensure doors protected by this unit can be opened in case of an emergency.

    Mounting Location

    1. Top of door (best): Mount here for best results, allowing flexibility against direct attacks on the door. Mount close to the corner opposite the hinges.
    2. Middle of door, opposite the hinges (good): Works well in most situations. Mount halfway up the door for greatest strength, and add extra springs to the armature assembly for vertical mounting.
    3. Bottom of door: Not recommended, as dirt buildup could affect operation.

    Installation note: Install the magnet assembly into the door frame before installing the armature assembly into the door. The magnet assembly requires space to run wires and for the recessed portion of the unit — make sure the selected position leaves enough room in the door to install the armature assembly.

    Installation — Cut the Door Frame

    1. Find the center line: close the door and let it rest naturally; trace the outside face of the door on the door frame; measure the door width and draw a parallel line at that distance; trace a center line between the two lines. Ensure the mounting location is clear of obstructions and door adjustment bolts before cutting, and allow room for the mounting tabs at both ends.
    2. Tape the door frame template to the door frame, aligning the template's center line with the drawn center line.
    3. Hollow metal door frames: cut out the rectangular piece of metal per the template, drill the four holes (two per end), mount the mounting tabs with the included metal screws, and run the wires.
    4. Wood door frames: rout or cut a 1-1/16" (27mm) deep, 5-13/16" x 1-3/16" (147 x 30mm) hole for the magnet assembly cavity, rout a 3/16" (5mm) deep, 5/8" x 1-3/16" (17 x 30mm) hole at each end of the cavity, and run the wires.

    Wiring

    1. Set the power supply type (12VDC or 24VDC) using the voltage-setting jumpers before connecting power. Incorrect settings can damage the SD-993B-SS.
    2. Connect to power — non-polarized, one terminal positive, one negative.

    The unit connects to a control device (N.C. contact, relay, or keypad) on the power input side.

    Installation — Cut the Door

    Note: When mounting vertically near the center of the door, disassemble the armature assembly and add the two included springs to improve push-off.

    1. Determine where to mount the armature assembly so it lines up with the magnet assembly.
    2. Draw the door center line between the front and back door faces.
    3. Tape the door template to the door, aligning the center lines.
    4. Hollow metal doors: cut out the rectangular piece of metal per the template, drill the four holes, and mount the mounting tabs with the included metal screws.
    5. Wood doors: rout or cut a 1-5/8" (42mm) deep, 5-13/16" x 1-3/16" (147 x 30mm) hole for the armature assembly cavity, and rout a 3/16" (5mm) deep, 5/8" x 1-3/16" (17 x 30mm) hole at each end.

    Mounting the Magnet and Armature Assemblies

    1. Double-check that the magnet assembly and armature assembly line up properly, and make any needed adjustments.
    2. Mount the magnet assembly onto the door frame and the armature assembly onto the door using the screws provided.
    3. Use washers or flat metal shims as necessary to mount both assemblies flush with the surface.
    4. Close the door and note the gap between the assemblies. Using the included hex wrench, adjust the nickel-plated portion of the armature assembly to make the gap as small as possible (min. 2mm) without interfering with door operation.
    5. Apply power and test operation.

    Troubleshooting

    1. Shear lock doesn't activate when door closes: the magnet assembly may be too far from the armature assembly — add shims under the back of the armature assembly, or re-adjust the position of either assembly.
    2. Poor attraction between magnet and armature: check the power supply matches specifications; if adequate, replace the unit.
    3. Magnet pulls the armature but door can still be opened: check that the locking bolts are seated in the armature assembly's keeper hole when activated.
    4. Door can be kicked or pushed in: check that magnet and armature surfaces are clean and free of dirt — even a little dirt can reduce attraction.
    5. Other problems: replace the unit and re-test; try substituting a known-working unit in another door frame to isolate the issue.

    Regular Maintenance

    • Clean the contact surfaces of the electromagnet or armature plate with a soft cloth and non-abrasive, non-corrosive cleaner.
    • Apply a light coat of silicon lubricant to prevent rust; wipe away the excess.
    • Check that the armature plate is securely attached to the door yet can pivot slightly around the armature screw.
    • Check that the electromagnet is securely attached to the door frame.

    Optional Bracket Kits

    SD-993S-SB (surface-mount bracket kit): For surface mounting, the magnet assembly can be surface-mounted (magnet and armature, using 2 surface-mount brackets) or flush-mounted at the header with a surface-mounted door bracket (1 surface-mount bracket). Includes 2 surface-mount brackets, 4 aluminum trim plates, 3 blind nuts, 3 hex screws, and 1 blind nut assembly.

    SD-993S-UB (U-bracket kit for glass doors): May require one or more SD-993S-SB and SD-993S-UB bracket kits depending on the glass door configuration. Includes 2 U-brackets, 8 aluminum spacers, 4 hex screws, and 1 hex wrench. Minimum gap 2mm, minimum clearance 7mm.

    Warranty

    This SECO-LARM product is warranted against defects in material and workmanship under normal service for one (1) year from the date of sale to the original consumer customer. SECO-LARM's obligation is limited to repair or replacement of any defective part if the unit is returned, transportation prepaid, to SECO-LARM.

    This warranty is void if damage is caused by or attributed to acts of God, physical or electrical misuse or abuse, neglect, repair or alteration, improper or abnormal usage, or faulty installation, or if SECO-LARM determines the equipment is not operating properly due to causes other than defects in material and workmanship. SECO-LARM's sole obligation, and the purchaser's exclusive remedy, is limited to replacement or repair at SECO-LARM's option; SECO-LARM is not liable for special, collateral, incidental, or consequential damages of any kind.
