PCS PulseWorx WS1C Wall Switch — Installation and Owner's Guide

Installation and owner's guide for the PCS PulseWorx WS1C Wall Switch (Power Relay Control) and its optional companion, the RWS Remote Wall Switch. These Decora-style rocker switches use PulseWorx's two-way UPB™ powerline communication technology for local and remote lighting control.

About the WS1C Wall Switch

The WS1C is a high-quality light switch that allows local rocker switch control of a lighting load while also incorporating UPB™ two-way powerline communication, giving it the ability to be remotely controlled by other UPB™-compatible controllers. It's highly configurable, can store up to 16 preset light levels for lighting scenes, and transmits UPB™ messages (including current light level reports) on rocker switch events. This model is intended for control of LED 0-10V drivers connected to a PRC receiver, for indoor use only.

About the RWS Remote Wall Switch

The RWS is a low-cost, optional companion device to the WS1C. It has a Decora-style rocker switch that controls the WS1C the same way its local rocker does, enabling three-, four-, or five-way lighting circuits.

Important Safety Notes

• Installation should follow the National Electrical Code and local regulations; a qualified electrician is recommended.
• All PCS PulseWorx™ Wall Switches require a neutral (white) connection wire.
• Disconnect all power to the load at the circuit breaker before installing — installing with power on may expose you to dangerous voltages and damage the device.
• Connect only copper or copper-clad wire to this device.

Installation Procedure

1. Remove the faceplate from the existing wall switch.
2. Unscrew and pull the existing wall switch out of the wall box.
3. Disconnect the wires from the existing switch, identifying the Line, Neutral, Load, and Traveler wires.
4. Install the WS1C, connecting wires per the wiring diagram. Ensure the WS1C is in the SYSTEM "OFF" position (air-gap switch open) before wiring — firmly press the rocker bottom until it clicks or the "OFF" label shows.
5. Optionally install any RWS Remote Wall Switch per the same wiring diagram.
6. Ensure all wire connectors are firmly attached with no exposed copper.
7. Place the wires and switch into the wall box with the LED at the top, then screw in place.
8. Before installing the faceplate, restore power and firmly press the top of the switch to exit the SYSTEM "OFF" position.
9. Test the switch for proper local operation, then install the faceplate cover(s).

Wiring Notes

• All PCS Wall Switches require a neutral (white) connection.
• Remote Wall Switches require the Line (black) wire to be accessible; it may connect to either phase of the 120/240V supply.
• The gray wire on the Remote Wall Switch connects to either earth ground or neutral, and only serves to light the LED (acting as a night-light indicator) — it carries no functional signal.

Air-Gap Switch

The WS1C's rocker switch includes an air-gap switch that removes all power from the load for safe installation and bulb replacement. Firmly press the rocker bottom until you hear a loud "click" or see the SYSTEM "OFF" label on the top rocker to activate it.

Factory Default Operation

Status LED Indicator

The WS1C has a multi-color status LED (normally blue) indicating UPB™ communication status. This can also be configured via UPStart Setup Software to a solid color or to reflect load state.

Configuring the WS1C

Once installed, the WS1C can be configured manually or with PCS's free UPStart Setup Software (used with a Powerline Interface Module, PIM) for advanced features like preset light levels, timed auto-off, and custom UPB message transmissions.

Entering Setup Mode

1. Tap the WS1C's local (or remote) rocker switch 5 times quickly.
2. The WS1C flashes its lighting load once and blinks its LED blue to confirm Setup Mode. It auto-exits Setup Mode after 5 minutes.

Key Configuration Options

Resetting Factory Defaults

1. Tap the WS1C's rocker switch 5 times quickly to select the device.
2. It flashes its light and blinks blue to confirm readiness.
3. Tap the rocker 10 times quickly to reset to factory defaults.
4. It flashes its light and blinks red to confirm the reset.
5. Tap the rocker 2 more times to stop the blinking.
