Installation guide for the Optex HX-40/40AM outdoor PIR motion detector and its wireless variant, the HX-40RAM.

Parts Included

Main unit, base, bracket, lens, hood, hardware, battery leads, alarm cables, and area masking seals.

Installing the Bracket

1. Remove the wire knockouts on the base unit before installing the bracket.
2. Remove the wire sponge and save it in a secure location.
3. Pop the tab open to locate the adjustment screw inside the bracket, and loosen the screw to open it.
4. The bracket can be installed 90° to the right or 90° to the left, depending on the application.
5. Adjust the bracket to a 45° angle and run the wire through the rear of the bracket, then pull it through to reach the terminals.
6. Install the bracket using the hardware provided.
7. With the sponge removed, feed the wire through the base unit, then replace the sponge.
8. Install the adjustment screw — do not overtighten, so the detector can still be adjusted; tighten fully once positioning is complete.

For convenient terminal access, the detector can be turned to face toward the housing using the tabs on the side. Once wiring is complete, rotate the main unit and install it into the base — grasp the sun shield when handling the unit to avoid touching the pyro-elements.

Detection Angle Adjustment

• Adjust the detector downward for a downgrade slope, or upward for an upward slope. Do not use the bracket to change the detection range — use the area masking seals instead.
• For a level adjustment, set the detector to 0 degrees, found on the right-hand side.
• Replace the cover on the cylinder once complete.
• Area masking seals can be installed inside the lens to block unwanted detection areas.

HX-40RAM — Wireless Version

The HX-40RAM is the wireless version of the HX-40 standard model. You'll need to provide a compatible universal transmitter that fits in the back box (see transmitter dimensions in the full user manual, page 4).

Battery Sharing vs. Not Battery Sharing

First determine whether you are battery sharing (power supplied from the battery box powers both the HX40RAM and the transmitter) or not battery sharing (separate batteries for each device).

Transmitter Installation

1. Remove the battery case by grasping the claws on each side and pulling straight out from the main unit.
2. Place the battery leads (included) and a dummy battery in the transmitter's battery case.
3. Depending on transmitter size, mount the battery box in the upper or lower position, using the provided velcro tape.
4. Wire battery power leads from the battery box to the main unit terminals.
5. Wire alarm cables from the transmitter to the alarm NO/NC/COM terminals on the main unit.
6. Once the transmitter is installed, install the main unit to the back box.
7. Install the hood for added protection from sun, rain, and snow.

Wall Tamper (Optional)

A commercial magnet switch may be mounted as a wall tamper. Installation space is provided on the back of the main unit.
