    August 31, 2026 8 min read

Installation guide for the On-Q/Legrand inQuire 1000 Intercom System — wiring, rough-in, trim-out, and operation for Main Console, Room, Desktop, Patio, and Door units.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation guide for the On-Q/Legrand inQuire 1000 Intercom System — a whole-home wired intercom with Main Console, Room, Desktop, Patio, and Door units connected to a central Intercom Module.

    System Components

    • Intercom Module: the "brains" of the system, typically installed in an On-Q enclosure. All Room, Door, and Patio Units, plus the Main Console, connect to it directly via home-run Cat 5e cabling. It also powers the whole system.
    • Main Console Unit: full intercom features plus a bank of status LEDs showing which Room Units are talking, muted, or in monitor mode, a dedicated door release button, and a hands-free talk button.
    • Room Unit: basic intercom functions — talk, talk-to-door, monitor, mute. Up to 12 per system.
    • Desktop Unit: same functionality as a Room Unit but sits on a desk/nightstand, connecting to a Cat 5e outlet.
    • Patio Unit: weather-resistant wall-mounted unit for outdoor use; door release functionality may be disabled for security.
    • Door Unit: lets a visitor press a chime button to notify occupants; occupants can talk back and optionally release an electronic door latch (not included).
    • Door Chime: add-on to the Intercom Module that sounds a chime on all units not in Mute or Monitor mode.

    Installation Safety Precautions

    • Installation instructions are intended for use by an authorized On-Q installer only — do not service, move, or change components unless qualified.
    • Must be installed by an authorized On-Q/Legrand installer and conform to local building and electrical codes.
    • Do not apply power to the Intercom Module until all system components are installed and wiring is properly terminated.
    • Turn off power at the Intercom Module and unplug the power transformer before terminating, changing, or removing any wiring.
    • Keep components away from heat sources (heating ducts/registers, stoves) and never install in a return air duct.
    • The enclosure must be installed in a cool, dry area — never in an unheated garage, attic, or outside wall.
    • Do not expose indoor-rated components to moisture — this creates electrical hazards, can render a component unusable, and voids the warranty.
    • Only use On-Q/Legrand authorized components, modules, and devices — using others voids the warranty.
    • Clean cover plates with a damp cloth only — no vacuum cleaners, liquid, or aerosol cleaners.

    Wiring Specifications

    Wiring Guidelines

    • Do not exceed 25 lbs. of pulling force on cable; never splice or staple cables — use wire ties with screw mounts.
    • Avoid running Cat 5 parallel to 120V/240V AC wiring or fixtures within 12 inches, and keep 12" separation from dimmer switches.
    • If crossing AC wiring is unavoidable, cross at a 90° angle with at least 2 inches of separation.
    • Maintain a minimum 1" bend radius; don't untwist Cat 5 conductors more than 1/2" at any termination point.
    • Keep cables away from HVAC ducts or sharp edges; clearly label all cable runs at both ends.

    Unit Placement Tips

Plan Room Unit and Main Console placement carefully before rough-in to avoid audio feedback. Avoid placing units back-to-back on a common wall (or if unavoidable, orient them to prevent feedback), avoid installing two intercom units in the same room, and avoid line-of-sight between one unit's speaker and another's microphone.

    System Wiring Overview

    Pre-Wiring (Rough-In) — During Construction, Before Drywall

    • Main Console Unit: mounts in a standard 3-gang electrical box (enclosed box preferred over an open mud ring to reduce feedback). Requires TWO Cat 5e runs, labeled "Main 1" and "Main 2," run directly to the Intercom Module enclosure.
    • Room Unit(s): typically installed on the same wall as the room's door; avoid placing units in the same stud cavity on opposite sides of a wall. Mounts in a standard 2-gang box. Requires ONE Cat 5e run per unit, labeled with the Room Unit number (max 12 units).
    • Desktop Unit(s): connect to a Cat 5e outlet in a standard 1-gang box near the desk/nightstand location. Requires ONE Cat 5e run per unit, labeled accordingly (max 12 units).
    • Patio Unit(s): installed on the exterior next to a patio door — use a heavy die-cast aluminum 2-gang weatherproof box for brick/cement exteriors, or a securely-framed heavy-duty box for vinyl/wood siding. Coordinate box depth and position with the masonry or siding contractor. Requires ONE Cat 5e run labeled "Patio Unit," connected to the Intercom Module's port 11/PATIO UNIT (this reduces max Room Units from 12 to 11).
    • Door Unit(s): installed on the exterior next to an entrance door, following the same weatherproof box guidance as Patio Units. Requires ONE Cat 5e run per unit, labeled by Door Unit number (up to 3 units — the 3rd requires port 12/DOOR 3, which reduces max Room Units from 12 to 11).
    • Intercom Module & Door Chime: rough-in the On-Q enclosure per its own instructions; the module and chime mount directly into the enclosure during trim-out (the Door Chime mounts on the back of the Intercom Module, no separate space needed).

Final Wiring (Trim-Out) — After Wall Coverings Are Finished

All units are terminated with RJ45 plugs (or 110 punchdown blocks for Door/Patio units) following the T568A color code: strip ~2" of cable insulation, untwist and arrange the pairs in color-coded order, crimp/punch down, then plug into the matching jack on the Intercom Module or unit. Each unit is secured into its gang box with included screws and finished with a decor plate.

    • Main Console: terminate both "Main 1" and "Main 2" cables into their respective jacks on both the console and the Intercom Module, then label each Room Unit's status LED using the included labeling sheet (R1596).
    • Room/Desktop/Patio/Door Units: terminate the labeled cable at each unit and at the Intercom Module, using RJ45 crimping for Room/Desktop units and 110 punchdown for Door/Patio units (weatherproofing gasket required for Door units).
    • Door Chime: mounts onto the rear circuit board of the Intercom Module (power off first) — align the pin array with JP203, seat with slight downward pressure, and secure with the included hex nuts and washers.
    • Intercom Module: terminate all cable runs (Room, Desktop, Patio, Door, Main Console) with RJ45 plugs following T568A before applying power. Plug each connector into its correct jack per your labeling. If a door release device is used, route its two conductors through the mounting bracket and terminate to the blue mounting block (JP202) on the rear circuit board, observing polarity. If using a 3rd Door Unit, plug it into port 12/DOOR 3 and remove the shorting block from pin #1 of JP100. Pin #2 of JP100 controls whether the Door Chime sounds at the Door Unit itself. Pin #3 of JP100 controls Patio Unit "Security Mode" — remove its jumper when a Patio Unit is installed on port 11 to allow temporarily disabling it from the Main Console.
    • Note: only door release devices operating on 12VDC with a maximum 500mA current draw are compatible.

    Operating the System

    Main Console Unit

TALK communicates with all active units; DOOR communicates with all Door Units; TALK HANDS FREE puts all active Room Units into hands-free mode for 20–30 seconds (or until pressed again); DOOR RELEASE engages an installed door release device while held; PATIO UNIT DISABLE (if security mode enabled) temporarily disables the Patio Unit by pressing TALK + DOOR RELEASE together. Status LEDs per Room Unit: green = talking, red = muted, orange = in monitor mode with active microphone.

Room / Desktop / Patio Units

TALK communicates with all active units; DOOR communicates with Door Units; MONITOR keeps the microphone always active (speaker disabled) for baby-monitor-style use — LED glows green, multiple units can be in monitor mode simultaneously; MUTE disables both speaker and mic (LED glows red) for privacy. Room and Desktop units have no dedicated door-release button — press TALK + DOOR simultaneously to trigger it if a door release device is installed. Volume has 20 levels via two buttons (LED bar shows current level; middle position, 3 LEDs lit, is recommended for best sound). Keypad backlight brightness is adjustable by pressing both volume buttons together, then using volume up/down — the unit returns to normal after ~10 seconds of inactivity.

    Door Unit

A visitor presses the Door Chime Button to sound a chime throughout the home; occupants press the DOOR button on any unit to talk with the visitor via the Door Unit's speaker and microphone, and may release the electronic door latch if equipped.

    Troubleshooting

    Problem Solution
No power to any intercom unit Check the Intercom Module's power LED and that the power supply is plugged in. Confirm you're using the correct 12V power supply with sufficient current for your system.
No power to a specific unit Check Cat 5e terminations at both the unit and the Intercom Module against the T568A standard; test conductivity and re-terminate if needed. Try plugging the unit into a different port on the Intercom Module.
Feedback or squeal noise Avoid placing units back-to-back on a common wall; if unavoidable, position them to prevent one unit's speaker from reaching another's microphone. Lowering volume from high to medium usually eliminates the issue.
Hum or buzzing noise Verify wiring guidelines were followed — Cat 5e should not run parallel within 12" of AC power cabling, fluorescent fixtures, dimmer switches, or fan controls.
Room Unit on "12/DOOR 3" port not functioning correctly Check that the shorting block is installed on the top two pins under the "JP100" label on the Intercom Module's rear circuit board.
Third Door Unit not functioning Confirm it's plugged into port "12/DOOR 3," and that the shorting block on the top two pins of JP100 has been removed (that port defaults to Room Unit operation).
