Installation instructions for the On-Q/Legrand evoQ 3000 6.5" Dual Voice Coil In-Ceiling Speaker (P/N 364658-01).

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation instructions for the On-Q/Legrand evōQ™ 3000 6.5" Dual Voice Coil In-Ceiling Speaker (P/N 364658-01) — a high-end speaker designed for rooms where a stereo pair won't fit, optimized for central sound distribution.

    Description

The evōQ™ 3000 features a tough, semi-flexible plastic frame with a built-in foam gasket to minimize vibration and maximize seal-ability, plus a perforated metal grill with acoustically transparent scrim cloth. It includes a Poly woofer and dual PEI (Polyetherimide) Mylar tweeters, and is paintable (with included painting shields to protect the drivers). Flip-out tabs allow for easy installation and removal. Suitable for moisture-rich environments such as bathrooms or saunas, but not for outdoor applications — check local building codes before installing.

    Installation — Rough-In Steps

    1. Run a 4-conductor stranded speaker wire from the distribution/volume control to the speaker location. Recommended minimum: 16 gauge for most applications. See the wire gauge chart below for longer runs.
    2. If using an On-Q Speaker Pre-Construction Bracket, skip to step 5 (see IS-0243 for detailed bracket instructions).
    3. If pre-wiring without a bracket, leave 4-6 feet of wire at the speaker's intended location. Use a strip of cardboard stapled to joints/studs with a hole through it as a wire placeholder for drywall installers.
    4. After drywall/painting is complete, push the wire through the hole, center the template over the hole, mark with a pencil, and cut out with a drywall knife.
    5. When using the Pre-Construction Bracket, leave a coil of speaker wire on top of the bracket coiled around the speaker mounting hole (clips on the bracket corners secure the wire). Strip about 3 inches of the speaker cable jacket, then strip 3/8-1/2 inch of insulation off the conductors.
    6. Place insulation behind the speaker to provide damping for the woofer driver — On-Q recommends poly-encapsulated insulation such as Johns Manville Comfort Therm®. For a defined, consistent sound, use the blocking chart below to size an enclosed cubic footage for the driver.
    7. If installing below an open attic space, box the speaker in with 1/2" MDF or plywood plus insulation for a defined acoustic space and speaker protection.

    Installation — Trim-Out Steps

    1. After drywall/painting is complete, push the speaker wire through the hole, center the template, mark, and cut out with a drywall knife.
    2. Hold the speaker (avoid pushing on the woofer's cone — this can permanently contort the voice coil), push in the terminal connectors, and insert wires. Positive wires go in the RED terminals, negative wires in the BLACK terminals. Remove the speaker grill first if it's attached.

Note: Wiring both drivers identically keeps them "in phase." If one driver is wired opposite the other, they will be "out of phase," causing smeared/canned sound and possible bass loss. Verify correct phasing on every installed speaker.

    3. Push the speaker into the cutout (again, avoid pressing the woofer cone) and turn the screws that engage the installation tabs in a cross/X-pattern until snug — do not over-tighten. The speaker should sit flush to the surface.

Tip: If using a cordless drill, turn the screws until almost tight, then finish tightening by hand. A strip of grill adhesive is included to more securely attach the speaker grills — insert several short strips evenly around the grill slot before installing the grill cover.
