    Overview

    The On-Q/Legrand Core Line Enclosure is a structured wiring enclosure for centralizing home telephone, coax, data, security, and control wiring. It's available in four sizes — 14", 20", 28", and 42" — each available with a hinged cover (includes lock assembly), screw-on cover, or as separate products (enclosure only, hinged cover only, screw-on cover only).

    Enclosure Installation

    Locate the enclosure centrally in the house to minimize cable run lengths, in a climate-controlled area. Temperature must be between 0°C (32°F) and 50°C (122°F), with humidity controlled to prevent condensation. If installing an electrical outlet in the enclosure, ensure compliance with all NEC wiring requirements — this is particularly important in basements subject to flooding.

    • Caution: Consult local electrical and building codes before installing for any limitations on enclosure locations.
    • The enclosure is not weatherproof — do not locate it outside or where temperature/humidity changes could cause condensation.
    • The enclosure is not fire rated and should not be mounted in fire-rated walls.

    The enclosure may be surface mounted or recess mounted between studs on 16-inch centers.

    Surface Mounting

    1. Securely mount 3/4" plywood backing with rear access knockouts accessible if needed.
    2. If cable access is through the back of the enclosure, remove the wire access knockouts from the rear.
    3. Position the enclosure in the desired location and mark the top of the center keyhole opening (located top-center of the enclosure).
    4. Install a mounting wood screw at the mark, with the head having 1/2" clearance from the back.
    5. Hang the enclosure on the screw and mark the four mounting holes and wire access holes on the plywood. Also mark top and bottom of the enclosure.
    6. If cable access is from the rear, remove the enclosure and cut access holes in the plywood for cables. (Access holes may be a large slot provided it doesn't extend beyond the enclosure — remove all rough edges to prevent cable damage.)
    7. Attach the enclosure to the wall using wood screws, removing the top centering screw to avoid interference with modules.

    Tip: it may be easier to rough-in cable and feed cables through the plywood prior to attaching the enclosure.

    Recessed Mounting

    Two methods, both using the mounting tabs on the enclosure sides:

    • Half-inch drywall: mount the enclosure to the front of the studs. Bend the side tabs on each side out to 90 degrees, then position and fasten using standard screws into the slots in the tabs.
    • Alternative: position the enclosure at the desired height and fasten to the sides of the studs using the slots in the tabs. Do not fully tighten until the enclosure is positioned at the desired depth — drywall depth marks are embossed on the enclosure sides. The enclosure should be snug prior to drywall installation but may be adjusted afterward to be flush with the wall.

    Grounding: route the ground cable from the enclosure to the house electrical ground; the ground screw is located inside the bottom of the enclosure. Use a minimum of 14 AWG copper wire to connect the ground lug to earth ground (electric ground is considered the same potential as earth ground).

    Running Power to the Enclosure

    AC power must be run to the enclosure when installing any module requiring AC or DC power. A low-voltage, UL-listed Class 2 plug-in power supply is required for these modules (available from your On-Q distributor).

    1. Remove the knockout in the bottom of the enclosure and install a single-gang metal outlet box.
    2. Run nonmetallic power cable to the enclosure for connection of a standard 15 amp, 120 volt power receptacle (available as a kit from On-Q, P/N F7526).

    Circuit separation must be maintained; electrical wiring must comply with the National Electric Code (NFPA 70), Canadian Electric Code, and all applicable state/local codes.

    Cable Rough-In

    All cabling to and from the enclosure is low-voltage Class 2 or communication cable. Maintain code compliance and good wiring practice, including separation from power and proper cable retention.

    Telephone Rough-In

    1. Install Category cable (per application) from the enclosure to the telephone company network interface device (NID), labeling near the enclosure entry and outlet location.
    2. Install Category cable from the enclosure to each outlet location, labeled similarly.
    3. Position and secure cables per codes and good practice to avoid damage during construction.

    Recommended: run a second Cat 5e cable from the telephone network interface to the enclosure for future data applications.

    Coax Rough-In

    1. Install Quad Shield RG6 cable from the enclosure to outlet locations, routed through the upper access hole with ~3 feet of excess, labeled at both ends.
    2. Install 2–5 Quad Shield solid copper center conductor RG6 cables from the enclosure to any planned dish antenna location, similarly routed and labeled.
    3. Install Quad Shield RG6 cable from the enclosure to any media center input and video outlets, similarly routed and labeled.
    4. Position and secure cables per codes and good practice.

    Other Cable Rough-In

    • LAN/data: install Category 5e cable from the enclosure to the desired outlets.
    • Audio/other low voltage: install appropriate cable per the application's instructions.
    • Security and control wiring: install cabling from the enclosure to sensors and controlled devices, routed through access holes with ~3 feet of excess, labeled at both ends. Refer to the security system installation guide for cable requirements and marking.

    Screw-On Cover Installation

    Only use On-Q/Legrand covers matched to the proper enclosure size.

    1. Partially install the top two screws in the enclosure.
    2. Hang the screw-on cover on the two partially installed screws using the keyhole openings in the cover — it should hang freely and fit against the enclosure (if not, check for pinched or misrouted cables).
    3. Install the remaining two screws with lock washers and tighten.
    4. Remove the top two screws and reinstall with lock washers, then tighten.

    Note: screws must be installed with lock washers to ensure the cover is properly and electrically grounded to the enclosure.

    Hinged Cover Installation

    1. Partially install two hinged cover mounting screws in the top two holes on the enclosure.
    2. Hang the hinged cover on the two partially installed screws using the keyhole openings on the hinge — it should fit against the enclosure (surface mount) or the wall (recessed mount). If it doesn't fit properly, check that cables aren't pinched and the lock isn't engaged.
    3. Install the remaining hinge screws with lock washers.
    4. Remove the top two screws and reinstall with lock washers, then tighten.
    5. Lock the hinged cover if desired.

    ⚠ Important Safety Instructions

    • Read and understand all instructions; follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product.
    • Do not use this product near water (bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, wet basement, or swimming pool).
    • Never push objects into this product through cabinet slots — they may touch dangerous voltages.
    • Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line is disconnected at the network interface.
    • Maintain a minimum spacing of 1/4" between power-limited, non-power-limited, telco, and coax circuits, as well as between current-carrying and dead-metal parts.
    • Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines; never install them during a lightning storm.
    • Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless specifically designed for such installations.
    • The receptacle box employed must be UL Listed and appropriate for the installation type (flush-mount vs. surface mount).
    • Enclosure covers must be installed prior to the application of energized services.
    • Low-voltage modules must be supplied power via a UL Listed, Class 2 plug-in power supply.
    • Unused cable entry holes require a knock-out seal, installed prior to the application of energized services, to reduce the risk of electric shock.
    • Any unused 110VAC receptacles must be covered.

    Note: these enclosures are only compatible with UL Listed Household Fire and Burglary Alarm System unit sub-assemblies as indicated in the control unit's installation instructions.
