    User's Guide for the On-Q/Legrand 4 Port Router/Switch (P/N 364772-02-V1) — a whole-house Internet-sharing router with a built-in 4-port Fast Ethernet switch, designed for structured wiring enclosure installation.

    Introduction

    The Legrand 4 Port Router/Switch is an integrated Internet IP sharing device with a built-in 4-port 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet switch. It connects a small group of PCs to a high-speed broadband Internet connection, allowing up to 253 users simultaneous high-speed access via one single ISP IP address. Built-in NAT technology also serves as an Internet firewall, monitoring and filtering incoming data packets; Client Filtering can restrict internal users' Internet access. The built-in 4-port switch lets users plug network cables directly into the device without an additional hub/switch.

    Features

    Internet Access

    • Shared Internet Access (NAT): all LAN users share a single external IP address; local IP addresses are hidden from outside sources.

    LAN Features

    Minimum Requirements

    • One external xDSL (ADSL) or Cable modem with an Ethernet port (RJ-45)
    • A Network Interface Card (NIC) for each PC
    • PCs with a web browser (Internet Explorer 4.0+ or Netscape Navigator 4.7+)

    Physical Description

    The connection area includes: a DC input connector, a WAN (Internet) port (8-position RJ-45, connects to cable/DSL modem), Local Switch Ports (8-position RJ-45 jacks for room outlets), a Power button, and a Reset button. Holding Reset for over 3 seconds restores factory default settings, clearing all user settings including username, password, IP address, and subnet mask.

    Status LEDs: Power (solid green when powered); Link/Act on each Local Port and the WAN Port (solid green = functional link with an attached device; off = no connection).

    Installation (New Construction)

    "Rough-in" Steps

    1. Run a single dedicated Cat 5e cable in the walls from the structured wiring enclosure to each room outlet requiring Internet service (leave extra cable at both ends). Keep Cat 5e at least 12" from electrical cabling (preferably in a separate stud cavity), cross electrical cables at a 90° angle, and use loose Velcro-style cable ties (specialty staples only if stapling is required, to avoid compressing the cable).
    2. Install a single-gang box or low-voltage bracket at each outlet location, with the extra Cat 5e cable stored so it can be fished out after drywall installation.

    "Trim-out" Steps

    1. Terminate the Cat 5e at each outlet with a 110 punchdown tool on an RJ-45 insert, then attach it to a wallplate installed in the gang box/bracket.
    2. In the structured wiring enclosure, terminate the Cat 5e runs with RJ-45 plugs (e.g. using the On-Q EZ RJ45 Modular Plug Hand Tool, P/N 364555-01) for direct connection to the Router/Switch.
    3. Install the 4 Port Router/Switch in the structured wiring enclosure by slipping the tabs into the square holes and using the push pin in a round hole to secure it.
    4. Connect an additional Cat 5e cable from the Router/Switch's WAN port to the Cable or DSL modem housed in the enclosure.
    5. Power the Router/Switch with its AC-to-DC adapter, plugged into an AC source.
    6. Proceed to configuration (see below).

    Use proper tools and standard TIA 568A termination rules — a Cat 5 cable stripper, RJ-45 crimp tool, and 110 punchdown tool.

    Initial Configuration

    Configure the router either from a portable PC connected to a Local Switch Port in the enclosure, or from a PC in a room, connected via that room's outlet back to the enclosure. Either way, the PC needs an Ethernet NIC.

    Assumes the PC's NIC is set to DHCP (obtain IP automatically) and the router is at factory defaults. Alternatively, you can assign your PC a static IP on the router's subnet (192.168.40.xxx) — the router's default address is 192.168.40.254, so a PC address like 192.168.40.10 would work. Before changing your PC's IP settings, write down the current configuration (Windows XP users can set a "last known usable configuration" first).

    Logging In

    1. With your PC connected to a local port, open a browser and enter the router's default IP address: 192.168.40.254.
    2. Log in with username admin and password admin.
    3. The System Status screen appears. Click WIZARD (upper left) for step-by-step setup, or configure manually via the top menu: SYSTEM (username/password, firmware upgrade, factory reset, backup/restore settings), WAN (connection type), LAN (starting IP address for LAN ports), NAT, FIREWALL, or DDNS.

    Step 1 — Host Settings

    Parameter Description
    Host Name Optional name for the Router/Switch.
    Time Zone Select your country's time zone; affects log entries and firewall settings.
    Daylight Savings Enable to account for daylight saving time.

    Step 2 — WAN Settings (choose per your ISP's requirement)

    Type Description
    Dynamic IP ISP automatically assigns an IP address.
    Static IP ISP has already given you a fixed IP address.
    PPPoE ISP requires Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet.
    PPTP ISP requires Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol.
    L2TP Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol — common for xDSL connections.

    Dynamic IP Settings

    Optional MAC Cloning: if your ISP requires a specific MAC address (the one originally used for your Internet connection), you can type it in or use "Clone MAC Address" while connected from that specific PC.

    Static IP Settings

    Enter the IP address, Subnet Mask (e.g. 255.255.255.0), and ISP Gateway Address provided by your ISP.

    PPPoE Settings

    User Name, Password (+ retype), optional Service Name, optional MTU (default 1492), and Maximum Idle Time in seconds (default 300 — auto-disconnects the WAN link after this period of inactivity).

    PPTP Settings

    PPTP Account, Password (+ retype), Service (PPTP Server) IP Address, My IP Address, My Subnet Mask, Gateway Address, optional MTU (default 1460), Maximum Idle Time (default 300 sec).

    L2TP Settings

    L2TP Account, Password (+ retype), Service (L2TP Server) IP Address, My IP Address, My Subnet Mask, Gateway Address, optional MTU (default 1460), Maximum Idle Time (default 300 sec).

    Step 3 — DNS

    A DNS server translates web addresses into IP addresses. Most ISPs provide one automatically with Dynamic IP; you may also specify a preferred DNS server manually. Set a Primary DNS Address and an optional Secondary DNS Address (used as backup if the primary fails). Click Finish to complete setup.

    Appendix A — Finding Your PC's IP and MAC Address (Windows)

    1. Open the Command Prompt.
    2. Type ipconfig /all and press Enter.
    3. Your PC's IP address is listed as "IP address"; the router's IP address is the "Default Gateway"; your PC's MAC address is the "Physical Address".

    Glossary (Selected Terms)

    • Default Gateway (Router): the IP address a device sends traffic to when the destination isn't on the local network.
    • DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol — automatically assigns IP addresses to devices on your network.
    • DNS Server: translates domain names to IP addresses.
    • NAT: Network Address Translation — lets all computers on your home network share one public IP address.
    • PPPoE: Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet, for broadband connections requiring authentication.
    • Subnet Mask: defines which portion of an IP address is the network vs. host identifier (e.g. 255.255.255.0).
    • WAN: Wide Area Network — the Internet side of the connection, as opposed to your LAN (Local Area Network).
    • MAC Address: the unique hardware address of a network device's Ethernet interface.
    • Idle Timeout: automatically disconnects the WAN connection after a period with no Internet traffic.

    Regulatory

    FCC: This equipment has been tested and complies with Class A digital device limits per FCC Part 15, Subpart B, designed to provide reasonable protection against interference in a residential installation (though interference in a particular installation is not guaranteed to be absent). If interference occurs, try reorienting the receiving antenna, relocating the receiver away from the router, or plugging the router into a different branch circuit.

    CE Mark: This is a Class B device; in a domestic environment it may cause radio interference, in which case the user may need to take adequate measures.
