    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation guide for the NuTone NWS15Z Z-Wave Radio Frequency (RF) Controlled Wall Mounted 3-Way Switch — a 15 Amp, 120 VAC wireless smart switch, Series 300.

    Overview

NuTone's family of Z-Wave® certified wireless lighting controls (switches, dimmers, outlets, and plug-in modules) brings intelligent wireless capability to commercial and residential environments. The Z-Wave wireless protocol is an international standard for remote home automation, security, and other applications. The embedded Z-Wave smart chip enables two-way RF communication among hundreds of Z-Wave enabled devices, allowing products and services from multiple manufacturers to work seamlessly. The NWS15Z carries Z-Wave certification, guaranteeing interoperability with other Z-Wave class devices.

DANGER! Shock Hazard. Read and understand these instructions before installing. This device must be installed in accordance with the National Electric Code and local regulations (U.S.) or the Canadian Electrical Code and local regulations (Canada). A qualified electrician should perform the installation. The load controlled by the switch must not exceed 1800 watts. For indoor use only. Retain instructions for future use.

    Important Installation Note

This module must be "included in the Network" only where it will be permanently installed. Proper operation in the mesh network depends on the module knowing its location relative to other nodes — you cannot "test bench" configure this module.

    Installation

Wire this switch in place of a current wall switch per the wiring diagram (Neutral 120VAC / White; Line / Black; Load 15 Amps maximum / Blue; Green Ground). The NWS15Z and the load must share the same proprietary neutral.

    • NWT00Z accessory switches, when used, must be wired to the same line (or neutral) as the master unit and the controlled load — not to any other neutral. If multiple neutrals are tied together in one box, separate them to preserve the integrity of the NWS15Z circuit.
    • The scored tab will break flush with the edge of the plastic.
    • Push the top or bottom of the paddle switch to configure.
    • A decorative switch plate is included.

Caution! Do not wire the unit "live" (with power on the circuit), and do not allow the yellow wire to contact line voltage, neutral, or ground — doing so will damage the device. Refer to your Controller's operating instructions to add this module under the command of the Wireless Controller.

    Including / Excluding the NWS15Z on a Z-Wave Network

    1. Prepare the Controller to include a unit to the network by adding it to a group (method of adding a node — refer to controller instructions).
    2. The NWS15Z must be in its permanently installed location.
    3. To add a node: NWI — tap the button once (either upon power-up of the node being included, or once the controller is prepared to add all nodes). Classic inclusion: tap the button twice.
    4. To remove a node: tap the button twice.
    5. Your controller should indicate that the "device was included" in the network.

Note: If you have trouble adding the NWS15Z to a group, the Home ID and Node ID may not have been cleared from it after testing — first "RESET UNIT" with your controller to remove it from the network. Adding it to a group includes it in the network, but removing it from a group does NOT remove it from the network — if removed from a group, it functions only as a repeater. "RESET UNIT" removes it completely from the network.

    Configuration

The NWS15Z supports the Configuration command, letting you change its default behavior:

    Night Light

By default, the LED turns OFF when the attached load is turned ON. To make the LED turn ON when the load is ON, set parameter 3 to 0.

    • Parameter No: 3 · Length: 1 Byte · Valid values: 0 or 1 (default 1)

    Invert Switch

To change the top of the switch to OFF and the bottom to ON, set parameter 4 to 1.

    • Parameter No: 4 · Length: 1 Byte · Valid values: 0 or 1 (default 0)

    Resetting to Defaults

Each configuration parameter can be reset to default by setting the default bit in the Configuration Set command (see your controller's instructions for support). All configuration commands reset to default when the NWS15Z is excluded from the Z-Wave network via the controller's reset function.

    Basic Operation

    Switch Paddle (Local Control)

    • Tapping the top of the switch turns the attached load ON.
    • Tapping the bottom of the switch turns the attached load OFF.
    • Pressing and holding the switch does not affect the load attached to the NWS15Z, but allows dimming/brightening of associated Z-Wave dimmers, if configured.

    LED Indication

The LED turns ON when the attached load is OFF, acting as a night light — this can be user-configured to turn ON instead when the load is ON.

    Remote Control

The NWS15Z responds to BASIC and BINARY commands that are part of the Z-Wave system. Refer to your controller's instructions to confirm it can transmit those commands.

    Internal Circuit Protection

Internal circuitry is protected by an internal fuse, which is factory-serviceable only. Check your home's circuit breakers before concluding the product must be returned.

    Advanced Operation

    All On / All Off

The NWS15Z supports ALL ON/ALL OFF commands and can be set to respond to them via four configuration options (refer to controller instructions for setup).
