Installation instructions for the NuTone LA-174 Built-In Electronic Chime — a recessed door chime supporting up to 3 door pushbuttons, with optional Radio-Intercom system integration.

    Installation Hints

    • This door chime is recessed into the wall; the white louvered grille is flush-mounted and may be painted.
    • Important: If connected to a NuTone Radio-Intercom System, chime tones sound at all inside/outside speaker locations (not at the door speaker) — must be wired per the Chime-to-Intercom section.
    • If no Radio-Intercom system is used, an optional door speaker can be installed at the front door so chime tones are heard there.
    • Use only the NuTone transformer supplied with the chime.
    • Select a central location so the chime is heard throughout the house; up to 3 door pushbutton locations supported.

    Mounting

    • Required wall cutout: 5⅝" wide × 7¼" high; housing depth 2¼"
    • Locate a wall stud and prepare the wall opening at the desired location before mounting.
    • Caution: The printed circuit board is fragile — use screws only to mount the housing; never nails or a hammer.

    Wiring

    1. Be certain all wiring complies with local and state codes. Disconnect house power before installing the transformer and keep electricity off until all connections are made.
    2. Mount the supplied transformer to a junction/panel box; connect its white and black wires to the matching-color house supply wires with approved connectors.
    3. Run 18-2 gauge wire from the transformer and pushbutton(s) to the chime location.
    4. If applicable, run NuTone IW-2 cable (No. 22 twisted pair) from the intercom master station and/or remote speaker(s) to the chime location.
    5. Pull wires through the housing knockout, position the housing flange flush with the wall, and secure with screws (not nails).
    6. Make wire connections to the terminals per Figure 1 in the manual, then test each door pushbutton — recheck wiring/pushbutton contact if the chime doesn't sound.

Transformer: 16 volt, 10 watt. Max wire run: 100 ft. per wire for 22 gauge, 18-22 gauge insulated wire.

    Chime Operation

    • 1st door: 8-note Westminster chime sequence
    • 2nd door: 1 note
    • 3rd door: 2 notes

    Volume Adjustment

Use a screwdriver to adjust the volume control on the back of the chime. If used with an Intercom System, make sure the intercom is ON while adjusting — the chime volume control also affects the "INTERCOM OUT" terminal volume.

    Standard Chime-to-Intercom Connections

Inside and/or outside speakers receive chime tones (door speaker excluded); chime tones override radio and intercom operation. Wiring varies by intercom model:

    Intercom Model Chime-to-Intercom Connection
    IMA-516 "I-COM 1 & 2" terminals to "CHIME" terminals
    IM-2003, IM-3003, IM-4006, IM-3103 "I-COM 1" to "WHITE"; "EXT. SPKR. 2" to "BLACK"
IM-3303 WHITE lead of IW-2 to "EXT. SPKR. 2" on chime; GRAY lead to "I-COM" on chime. From chime: WHITE to (−) "ELECTRONIC CHIME" on IM-3303 Master, GRAY to (+).
IM-4406 WHITE lead of IW-2 to "EXT. SPKR. 2" on chime; GRAY lead to "I-COM" on chime. From chime: WHITE to (−) terminal near "Line Output Jack", GRAY to (+) terminal near "Tape Input Jack" on IM-4406 Master.
IM-5000 WHITE lead of IW-2 to "EXT. SPKR. 2" on chime; GRAY lead to "I-COM" on chime. From chime: WHITE to (−) terminal near "Door Speaker", GRAY to (+) terminal near circuit board mounting screw on IM-5000 Master.
